sitting knocks or knitting socks

heh. Eli is still in the darkroom downstairs printing pictures, and everyone else is asleep, and I heard a door open and then a little while later someone come by so I said "hi honey!" without looking up and of course then I heard Brooke's voice go "hi there!" and boy did I feel stupid. :) Eli has been down there for like 3 hours... I guess once you get started it's hard to stop.

Anyway, today was a day of even more shopping and gifts. Eli's mom took us all to this yarn store in Northampton and bought tons of yarn and new knitting needles and some pattern books for me and Brooke and herself. I got a circular knitting needle and some soft yarn so I can make myself a non-itchy hat and learn to use a circular needle, and I got four double-pointed size 6 needles (we all did) so I can make socks! Eli's mom got a pattern for sport socks, so we all picked out yarn for sock-making. I picked out a ton of white yarn - I am going to make baggy Japanese-schoolgirl socks. :) I also got a book with generic knitting patterns that you can sort of tune to whatever you want to make. Eli's mom bought this all, which I was like "no! you can't buy me more gifts, you already got me stuff!" but she insisted. I think she likes having "daughters" to knit with (since Eli is the oldest of 3 boys). Anyway... afterwards we went to a toy/science store called A to Z, and I got a weird-ass spinning flute, and we looked at random games. They had the robot game that [profile] combinator is writing his senior research thesis on, on display, but they didn't have a copy of the game in the store. Doh! They said they'd get it in sometime soon, so maybe I'll go back.

After that, Eli and I went off on our own. The sci-fi/gaming store was closed, but we went to some other bookstores and things like Faces (now I have gifts *and* cards for all of the LJ friends I will see in Boston - watch out! (At least I hope so... I have stuff for Tara+Ben, Laurel+Jason, Heather+Jarrett, and Barbara+Mark - am I forgetting anyone?)) Faces is so cool. It's like the embodiment of the hipness of Northampton. They sell tons of random things, like beaded curtains and candles and photo frames, and Spencers-ish gifts, and cool cards, and shirts and hip clothes and novelty stuff. (They have sanrio stuff and Care Bears stuff and Strawberry Shortcake stuff - I swear if I was a kogal like Carolee I would have been in heaven) Then more bookstores, and umm... we went to a camera store and got chemicals for developing pictures, and then we stopped by the mall and I played DDR again! Whee! This time I knew the codes for SSR and vivid and all, so I played some really hard songs and got quite a bit of a crowd. It's so strange. After I left the machine, there were these other kids playing, and I was hoping they'd be good, but instead they put it on easy and failed Silent Hill (one of the slowest easiest songs in the game...) Oh well. I guess it's sort of cooler than being in the midst of a ton of skilled players such that you can't even get time on the machine...

We went to Amherst Chinese Food for dinner. We had yummy egg rolls, dumplings, and moo shu pork and spicy beef with snow peas. It was all pretty good. When we got home, Eli started futzing with darkroom stuff and I started knitting with Eli's mom and Brooke. Using the four double-ended needles to knit socks is reallly weird, but once you get used to it it goes pretty quickly. We had ice cream rolls, and Eli and I called my dad to get darkroom advice, which was pretty amusing. And now Eli is done with darkrooming for the night and I am done with onlining for the night.

I guess I spent like two hours talking to family people while Eli was in the darkroom and it wasn't so bad. I feel like I still come off as a freak, but... whatever, I'll get used to it all someday.

Hey, you got stuff for us? Cool. I guess I should remember to bring up the present I got for you, too. I should also hope that it isn't something you already got for yourself. :)
