things like being tired, being dumb, playing cosmic encounter, etc.
it's funny. Serle said "good god! you have 315 friends! your friends page must be absolutely unmanageable! thats insane!"
he's entirely right.
but it's like, for the most part, I actually do try to read everyone. I should set up better filters though. I just spent 2 hours catching up on like... 3 days.
Anyway, Friday and Saturday.
Friday, I went to work, tired as all heck as usual. I got lunch from Costco, which resulted in eating what was possibly the most mediocre chicken caesar salad I have ever had in my life. By which I mean, I went to their lunch window thingy where you can order sandwiches and whatnot and I got a salad, which means I got a plastic container with some lettuce and chicken and cheese and tomatoes in it and a thingy of salad dressing, and I combined it all and crunched away and felt totally unfulfilled. I wish Outback was open for lunch because I have always enjoyed their salads. I guess maybe I will go in there for dinner sometime. (It is half a block from where I work.)
Also, I moved desks. Woo, one week and I already had to swap work spaces. So now I am not in the dark area with the "creative" group but in the light area near the other tech writers. This'll work out better. I'm sitting between the tech editor lady and some tech writer guy who seemed pretty nice.
I was so tired by 6:30pm that I just drove home. I nearly fell asleep at the wheel. Somewhat scary. I came online for my OCL matches (we went 2-2 due to Cioj disconnecting) and was so zonked I just logged out and went to take a nap around 9pm. I had at least 3 social options for the evening, like Marty's party and the ITG stomp session and dinner with people and whatnot and instead, I slept. I'm so lame.
Got up at 11pm. Attempted to make plans with Krispy, and with Jason, and failed at both. Instead, stayed on PP all night with the usual suspect, doing tailor work and sailing herbs around and whatnot. Good times. Went to sleep at 6am. I suck.
Saturday I got up at 10:30 to find that Jason was going to the baseball game with his family and Krispy was on a houseboat. Went back to sleep. Woke up around 3pm. Oops. Did a little stuff in PP, then went off to Nykkel's house, where he, DJ, Phaedrus, and Farren were all playing a "short" 1-power game of Cosmic Encounter. It wasn't too long I guess. It was around 7pm when they finished, so we all went to Pagliacci's Pizza for dinner, where we got a lot of meat on pizzas and watched the Virginia Tech vs. USC football game. Reconvened at Nykkel's for a longer 2-power VERY BITTER game of Cosmic where Nykkel all but took me out of the game by swapping my k-rad powerful hand with Phaedrus's lame-o weak hand in like the second turn of the game. I seriously was almost out of the game (down to two home bases even, so I lost a power - I was Bully/Silencer so I ditched Bully) until DJ played a Moebius Tubes, then most of us came back, and I even had 4 bases at the end of the game. Phaedrus won because I silenced him. I was telling people to shut up a lot. Mostly Nykkel. He deserved it. :P The funny thing is it occurs to me that we've always been so much stricter about people being Silencered in Pittsburgh than we ever are here. Like here, being silenced just means you don't get to do game mechanics that involve speaking. In Pittsburgh we always did it that it meant you SHUT THE FUCK UP for the entire turn. Ah well.
After that Phaedrus left, the remaining four of us played Corsairs, it was fun, and then Nykkel showed me a new puzzle game involving pirates that I forgot the name of and I will never play anyway, because we all know what happened LAST time Nykkel told me to play a puzzle game involving pirates. Then we listened to some weird Kosaka Riyu cover songs on DJ's laptop, and then went home.
Chernabog and I discovered some incredibly great cloth deals in PP tonight which resulted in us sailing a ton of stuff around to a whole bunch of places. It also sadly involved us both staying up until 6am. But, we're gonna be totally set for a whole bunch of different cloth colors for quite some time, and I'm happy about that.
And if you play PP and are around at 8pm Pacific tomorrow, please come to my Tourney in a Half Shell - TURTLE POWER!
I hope Krispy calls me and wakes me up so we can go get kaiten sushi today.

You sound pretty angry over these sorts of things. Both you and Nykkel (sometimes Phaedrus) take this game waaaay too seriously sometimes and it makes it unfun to play. Most of the time we do STFU for the entire turn, but if it's just a joke and doesn't involve CC- where's the harm being done? <3

It sounds like we might need to introduce the rule that one group I played with used: when you're Silencer you get to choose how it works (before the game starts, or as soon as you get it if you get it during the game). You can say that it completely silences the target (no gestures, no communication at all), but then you can't silence the same player twice in a row (so that a single player doesn't get too bored by spending most of the game silenced). Or you can say that it only prevents the target from talking about the game (social talk still allowed), but then you can use it with no restrictions.

Wasn't playing any more viciously last night than usual, but if that made the game come across as "very bitter", then perhaps it should go on hiatus at our gaming sessions for a while. Or perhaps you're over-reacting. I don't know. I look forward to seeing what Farren and DJ have to say about this (since they were both there), so we can see what the consensus is. We certainly had a lot of very unfriendly powers in that game: Silencer, Vacuum, Grudge, Bully... hm, all of mine and all of yours. :)
No apologies for taking away your "k-rad" hand in that game. I wanted to play the flare on someone before it got taken away and played on me. You happened to be in a challenge at the right time. I had no idea what was in your hand or Phaedrus's hand, and realized it was really stupid to be asking people "hey, you wanna trade hands?", so I just did it. *shrug* And I was down to two home bases near the end too, just like you were.
I play to win when I feel like the chance is there... and play to "not be bored" when it isn't. If that ends up hosing other players, well, we do always say that Cosmic Encounter is a very unforgiving game. Perhaps we need to play something a little more forgiving for a while, so our gaming sessions will be more friendly and less hostile.
I don't know what to say in response to Matt's remark. If I'm making the game unfun to play, then we're going to have to stop playing it at my place, because I'm not going to change the way I play. Suggestions are welcome.

A friend of mine plays the same way, but gives up on the "win" strategy fairly early and goes with "not be bored", even if to the rest of us is seems like he could still win.
Usually when this happens we want to kill him by the end because all rationality has gone out the window and he starts screwing people over both randomly and accidentally.

Cosmic can really suck if everyone else is at 4 bases except for you, as that keeps you from inviting allies, but doesn't keep your opponent from inviting them to stop you from taking any more bases yourself. Those become "I can't win, and I can't do much of anything interesting without being looked down on as a 'kingmaker', so will someone please win this damned game?" games. Yet you still feel obligated to try and stop people from winning, which exhausts the resources you need to try for a win yourself. I think Deanna may have felt like she was in a similar position in last night's game, before the Moebius Tubes got played.
A friend of mine used to play Robo Rally in a way that sounds like what you're describing, though. Early in the game, he'd give up on actually heading to flags. He'd just pick up annoying weapons, and then run around trying to kill anyone he could reach. That got tiring fast. :)

Personally I think you three take the game too seriously sometimes, but it's not enough to not come over and play when I'm off on Saturdays :)

The more serious charge of the game being unfun ... really, I hadn't noticed it. I get the Attack 40 card and the Doppleganger Flare, and there's Nykkel sitting with the Doppleganger power ... sucks to be me, life goes on. I'm not really seeing the need to take any sort of extended break from Cosmic ... I'm still having fun playing it.
