Mariners vs. Yankees and other fun
I should not be still awake. Stupid PP and drama.
Anyway.
bpr called to wake me up this morning and picked me up and we went to Northgate to take the bus to the Mariners vs. Yankees game. We got there crazy early and both did scorecards and whatnot. It was apparently some special day so they were handing out "Go Mariners" signs in pink and blue, that was kinda cool. Oh, and the 50 millionth Mariners fan came in during today's game... literally 5 minutes after we went through the gates. There was a big fanfare and the guy got to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The game itself... eh, Jamie Moyer gave up back to back home runs in the first inning to Gary Sheffield and Bernie Williams, and that kinda set the tone for the game. Although we were winning at one point, I guess I kinda knew the Mariners weren't gonna win today's game from the moment Sheffield's first inning HR cleared the fence.
One neat thing is, A-Rod wasn't playing, and John Olerud *was*. He was playing first base for the Yankees and batting 7th. So in the second inning, Ruben Sierra flies out to center, and then... and then the announcer goes "Batting 7th, first baseman, John OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLERUD!" just like they used to announce him as a Mariner, and they played his theme song (the "Ole Ole Ole" one) and the entire stadium got up and applauded and applauded and applauded, a huuuge standing ovation welcoming him back to Safeco. What a total difference from when A-Rod goes up to bat! (Or even like when Jeff Cirillo came back earlier this year.) I nearly cried, honestly. I never thought I'd get to see Olerud play again after the stupid Mariners stupidly designated him for assignment a month ago. So I am so happy I got to again. Although it was just plain weird to see him playing first base for the OTHER team. Still... it is a true tribute of how much Seattle loves John Olerud. (Although, umm, he also had the honour of being the one to bat in the 2 winning runs in the 8th inning)
I forget most of the rest of the game. The ground crew danced to "There's No Business Like Show Business", which was GREAT. Seriously. They even used their brooms kinda like canes on Broadway and did a kickline. Oh, and we got to see Jose Lopez hit his first major league home run. I think I was actually there for 3 current Mariners' first major league home runs now! How crazy. Ichiro made a really amazing catch early on, and Justin Leone made some awesome plays at 3rd. But still, the Yankees won, and that sucks.
Rather than just go home after the game, Brian and I walked to Pioneer Square afterwards and went to the Elliott Bay Bookstore, where I recommended to him a bunch of baseball books and stuff, and I personally started reading through a few. I saw a baseball tarot deck but passed on it. After that we walked through downtown a bit, eventually ending up at the Union street busway stop, and took the 41 back up to Northgate. Came back here to debate dinner; Brian suddenly decided he wanted Chinese food, so we went to Snappy Dragon and traded D&D stories for an hour and a half over sesame chicken and too-spicy ma po tofu. Whee.
Bleh, so I intended to get some sleep early tonight since I'm gonna get up tomorrow morning to help blockade Turtle Island in PP (we are doing a Merchants of Turtle coalition to take it back from Death's Gate) but instead I got caught up in drama and other things. The good part was helping many allies move ships up to Turtle. The bad part was that Rifkind quit the game and deleted her pirate. The good part was, I wrote another song in honour of the blockade...
La Isla Tortuga
(To the tune of "La Isla Bonita" by Madonna)
Last night I went to The Old Sew
Just looked there on the rack, I bought a hat
Price was so nice before taxes
It was cheaper yesterday, how much we'd pay
Chorus:
Tropical the island ain't
All the shops unique and quaint
This is where I sell my paint
La Isla Tortuga
And with the flag Death's Gate
The redness filled the sky
Went through the docks and stung my eyes
The cannonballs will fly
I fell in love with a Turtle
But then Hades crushed its shell, it went to Hell
I'll jump any hurdle
To make that dear island free
So job with me
(chorus)
I want to be where the pirates all grin
When you're done with yer pillage ye can chat at the inn
Beautiful outfits, nice swords and fine rum
Where the girls love to sail and the boys love... to gun.
Last night I sailed up to Diamond
My brig bought just yesterday, blockade today!
(chorus)
