Thursday - Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra

Today I woke up and thought "GODDAMN IT'S HOT". I cleaned up some more around here (no matter how much I do, it still feels like I can't possibly ever finish) and then went out.

DJ and I went to Blue C Sushi and had kaiten sushi for dinner, whee, (reminder to myself: call Will Frank) and then drove downtown to the Showbox where we saw the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Hmm. Kaitensushi and Japanese ska... yeah, only in Seattle.

No, anyway. It was a pretty good show I guess. First I went and got t-shirts and CDs (so yes, I have them fer you, [profile] arashink, we'll have to figure something out), then we wandered around... show at 9pm and at 8:40 the place was still EMPTY, it was kinda scary. We saw two of DJ's coworkers/friends, and then during the opening band ("3 Inch Max" I think), we ran into Bobby Conover (Scumdog) as well, I hadn't seen him in freaking FOREVER. So that was kinda cool. He encouraged us to go up to the front and it's a good thing we did...

...because it really was a rockin' concert. I don't know enough Ska-Para songs by name to tell you what they played, but they were pretty damn good. (They did play a ska version of Lupin the 3rd which was pretty good, if that helps.) Most of their songs don't involve lyrics, either, which makes it harder to identify them :) Anyway they played a mix of quiet skanky stuff and a bunch of really loud fast stuff. The crowd was about 80% Japanese... the annoying part was that the non-Japanese people decided to start a moshpit, and it was kinda scary with these big white guys moshing around in the middle of a crowd of small Japanese women. Oi. Well, anyway.

Yeah, so I danced around and waved my arms and everything for 2 hours or whatever. It was just a good show in general. I have to admit I don't really care for Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra on CD, but they have a lot of energy and are really entertaining live. I guess plenty of ska/punk bands are like that though. Oh, and during the encore, they had some guy (forget his name of course) from the Specials, who lives in Seattle, but who became friends with the Ska-Para guys when the Specials played in Tokyo, came up and played with them for a song. That was pretty cool. And then they did Down Beat Stomp for their last one, and that's a pretty high energy song, and even one of the drummers came out and started singing and dancing all over the stage. Good stuff.

Went home and I still have a headache. Oi. Time to sleep through the hot hot morning hours...

Hmm, dunno exactly what I'll do this weekend. Gonna go to the Nerdvana party Saturday night, but I honestly dunno anything else. Maybe go to Canada and visit Fuj on Sunday or Monday :) I'd like to go to the Fremont Solstice thingy if anyone else is going and would let me tag along... I want to avoid driving there if at all possible. And I should get in gear for other stuff too, oi.

I mock your heat.

Of course, we don't go out in the heat, really.
