Carnival Day 3

So, we headed to Carnival... caught about 5 mins of the acapella concert by the time we got there. Fortunately I walked in just in time to see a certain PP crewmate of mine singing "The Masochism Tango" though :) He sounded great! And I saw [profile] mikebreen for the first time in a while, too.

Carl and I headed towards the lounge after that, running into a couple people on the way. Like Zarf. I think he'd like PP if he tried it. Har.

In the lounge, we were accosted by Sarah and Joey, who were working on their project. I gave them several minutes of stuff for it. So did Carl, after I threatened him.

We headed out to the lounge BBQ around 1:45 I guess. When we got there, the grill was just heating up, and there were many many people there. I got to see Schuresko and his wife, and tmaher, and saw Pete Sand again, and Camille, and met jcreed and mhock's friend Adam, and saw Alan, and rlj and his girlfriend, and Vince and Robbins and Shell, and Roman, and shiue and wossname girl who was with him that I never caught, and Laurel, and Allwein and Zach and well the whole austin crew, and Shelby and Virginia, and Emilie, and Jensen, and Charlie, and too many people to list really. It was fun hanging out and eating and talking and whatnot. There were a lot of bees though. It reminded me of being at D&D with Mike.

I stopped in at the KGB defectors' party for about 5 mins when they were closing up shop. Oops. [personal profile] damion had a k-rad "October October Revolution" shirt for me though! yay!

Went back to the picnic... (walked across campus sending IMs to Kuibbles, who had sent me a "Pillage?" message. Heehee.) Watched some bughouse chess... got Carl and we headed to the lounge to find [profile] bpr and [personal profile] whitemage... they were both there but it turned out that Dave had to go run a KGB booth party or something... so... he wasn't going to play Twilight Imperium... but... Brian wanted to... Carl said he would... so we just needed to find a fourth. After finishing up a game of Ricochet Robot and determining that we would not find a fourth in the lounge, the three of us went off to the UC to check Gaming Club for potential players.

We got there and I saw Bayani and some other people and they all waved hi and I was like "We need a fourth for Twilight Imperium" and Andres was like "I would, except I don't have my copy this week..." (Brian takes out the game) "...ah! Yeah, I'm in!" Heh. So we ended up playing a game of Mamma Mia for a few minutes to waste time until Andres was done with his game. The funny part was introducing myself to the non-Brian-non-Carl people in the game... the one guy's like "Oh, I met you before. I'm Steve." and I'm like "Holy crap... Steve BATES??" Turns out he cut his hair and I haven't seen him in like 6 years so I barely recognized him... we had a class together when I was a freshman and he was a 5th year senior... ten years ago :)

(And then I saw [profile] brkdwn_palace on my way to Entropy... how weird! I *know* I had not seen Fred in around 9 years. And [profile] mistergone a bit later too. How fun!)

Anyway. So we got a game of Twilight Imperium going! It was me, Carl, Brian, Andres, Steve, and Roman. It started more like 8:30-9ish instead of 7pm but oh well. Carl got to pick his alien race first, choose from 3 random... he got the Emirates of Hacan, which is the race I wanted. I ended up as the Mentek or whatever - the Space Pirates! Arrr! Anyway... due to that, I was really kinda weak at the beginning, they don't even start with a transporter, so I was stuck my first turn just building, and then starting to move into my adjacent hexes after that. Carl and I struck an early diplomacy border which helped... so I basically went after my planets and had a slight skirmish with Roman. Roman went after Steve and ended up getting totally pounded in return. My strategy was just to keep moving forward slowly and non-threateningly.

And well, it worked. Roman ended up dropping out of the game, and so while everyone else beat up on each other, I pretended to be mainly interested in keeping peace with the real players and beating up Roman's remaining defensive forces, when in reality I was massing a whole bunch of cruisers and fighters in my systems. I had been voted to get two of the special powers; one made my fighters +1 if I kept ordering fighters, and one made me get money for neutral planets being taken over. Those really helped in the end because I needed to swamp one planet to have enough resources, planets, and influence to win... and I was able to swamp a planet. Although, I feel bad - it wouldn't have worked if Andres had gone after me instead of before me... and he was supposed to... but since I had gone last all game I just kind of let him do it. He would have had a chance to strike back and I had several weak spots.

But, hey. So, 2am, and I won a game of Twilight Imperium for the first time ever. And the game only took like 5-6 hours. Not too bad.

It's funny... I know there were a lot of parties and things tonight like swing dancing and whatnot, but honestly, it seemed like the easiest way to choose between them, especially with no transportation, was to hang out playing board games rather than going off and getting drunk. I didn't mean to ditch people or anything, but blah, just too many options makes Deanna something something.

Now I have been goofing off in PP for a little bit and now I will sleep and stuff.

...because I was just recently bemoaning that I never hear people say "k-rad" any more. :)
