Things like cable modems

I really do appreciate everyone's input on the cars. I haven't really had time in the last day or so to really sort out what I'm doing in terms of car loans and all that sort of stuff, but I have to admit I'm leaning more and more to the Civic Hybrid.

That said -- last night Josh and Megan and Eli and I did quiz night at the Irish Emigrant. We were leading the B division until the last sheet, which was book titles -- you had to give the author, the year of the movie, and the movie's male and female leads. Needless to say we totally booched it and blew our lead. I guess the only moment I'm vaguely proud of from the whole night was that I actually DID figure out the bonus answer to the bingo round ("Take the first letter of each answer, unscramble them, you'll get a movie quote". It was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. We had three bingo answers wrong, so I was working on fuzzy information. I also didn't get it in time to actually turn it in for credit, but I did get it before he announced the answers, so go me).

I spent the evening unpacking another box or two, and I built part of my computer table and set up my computer, since I knew the cable modem dude would be coming today. I put in some laundry and I chatted on the phone a bit and slept.

This morning sucked though. Cable guy called at 9:30 saying he'd be over soon (scheduled between 8am-noon, so that's not bad). He showed up at 10:45 because he'd been installing another modem in my building, and it took a really long time. So he talked me into letting him do the "premium" installation since the other people had such problems. Well, guess what, I had problems too - computer didn't want to readjust to the new location and account's information or something, which was really annoying. So he fixed it, except that when he left, the modem was still blinking and trying to authenticate... he said it might take a little while for the server to get up and all. So whatever. I went and took a shower and got ready for work, but the cable modem was STILL blinking and not having network. So I called tech support and they told me the modem seemed broken. WTF? It had just worked a minute ago... whatever. The cable people called me to say that I should wait until 2-4pm for the databases to update before I worried about the net access and they'd send someone over first thing in the morning if it didn't work tonight. So I took the bus downtown since it was past noon by then, and grabbed food at Westlake and came to work. At least things are actually pretty good at work. But eh, I'm really annoyed about how stupidly the cable modem thing went this time given how easy it was last time.

Make sure you try powering off the cable modem and disconnecting it for 30 seconds or so, then reconnecting it and powering it back on. It's surprising how often that's enough to solve a connection problem. Seems like it doesn't always notice when the original problem has been cleared up, but it is forced to check anew if you power it off and disconnect it.

I'm curious what makes the Camry more attractive than the Prius. I'm going to have to figure out something for a new car within the next few years, and have been leaning towards the Prius. Would a price break on the Prius influence the decision?
