le mont est mort, vive le mont

Tonight we had a company holiday party.

I wore my dress from the Claritech Feb 2000 winter party thingy, because I remember having a great time at that company party. I brought Eli with me, and convinced Carl to go too. The disappointment was that Fred and Matt didn't show up, so our table was missing three people and was a little sadder than it may have been. But it was still fun since we sat with Cat and her husband and Josh and his girlfriend. Cat's husband and Josh's girlfriend both work at Pair, which is wacky, and apparently the entire gang of them all worked at Lycos at some point.

The party was at Le Mont, which is this fancy-schmancy restaurant up on Mount Washington. Its best feature is the view - the dining rooms overlook the river and the city and the lights and all. Its food isn't bad, although I've heard that if you're paying for it yourself, the view is worth a lot more than the food is. I didn't mind the stuff we got, but I guess it was standard banquet fare. I thought it was kinda funny because when we got there I looked at the sign and thought it said "Le Mort". Anyway... they had this game where people wore necklaces of green and red and you were supposed to try to fool other people into saying the word "So" while not saying it yourself. Needless to say, I lost pretty quickly. The prize for having the most necklaces at the end of the meal was a DVD player. It pretty much came down to Kristie and one of the labellers (or one of the labellers' girlfriends. I think it was Margo Rice, actually, but I haven't seen her in a while so I'm not sure). The other entertainment was this magician guy. I think I'm just sick of magicians. The only tricks I like are the ones that actually take some doing, like when objects move around in ways that don't seem quite possible. Card tricks bore me to tears since I've seen them all before. But, whatever. I dunno.

I don't know how to really talk to most of the people at WBL though. That bugs me. I can't tell if they just don't want to talk to me or if I don't usually want to talk to them so they figure I don't want to talk to them, or what. It makes schmoozing at a party a lot more difficult when nobody really cares whether they talk to you.

Anyway, getting home and playing SSX and Simcity was a lot more fun and relaxing than the party. At least I got a free dinner out of the party, though.

Last night I had SFFS, although I forgot to mention it, and today I got lunch at Lulu's with Roman and Carl. I have decided that it's not just me, the beef chow fun is annoying to eat. The noodles are good, but the beef is just too hard to chew. Glorp.

Oh! One amusing anecdote from the party tonight was meeting one of the new guys and he said something random that corresponded to a Paranoia phrase, and I followed up with "...and is punishable by summary execution" as a joke and he replied "...by fervent reprogramming" or something. So I was like "Oh. Um, sorry, wrong game," and after a slight odd pause he went "No, right game. Happiness is mandatory, citizen!" and I was sort of surprised but amused. Yeah. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that at our table when Cat said "We're getting an illusionist to perform after dinner," I replied "Wait, so remind me, the opposite school of Illusion is.. conjuration?" or something like that, and nobody at the table was all that surprised (infact they all play D&D - go figure).
