HAPPY NEW YARRRRRRRRR!!!!

So, yeah. The last day of 2003.

I played hooky from work today. I woke up feeling like crap AND it was cold AND I was worried about the snow and... eh, it's no big deal, just another day off the chunk of vacation time. I rested some, and did some more unpacking, and I played with my computer's CD burner to do some backups. I did get some good Puzzle Pirates time in as well, and made it to Ultimate in carpentry. (I beat Nykkel to it! Har!)

Eli got home and we went to Mori for dinner, as most things around here weren't open. Right before I was getting ready to leave, I got a phone call from [community profile] jiggery_pokery, which confused me because the caller ID was some weird scrambled number, but it was good to hear from him even if for a second. Whee!

Then we went to Megan and Josh's house for a big new year's game party. When we got there, people were playing Trivial Pursuit (some new pop culture version), and since it was almost 9pm, I went upstairs and called [profile] dvarin and talked to him for a while because it was about midnight in Pittsburgh. Then I came back downstairs and Justin was getting sick of Trivial Pursuit, so we were going to go find another game to play, and so after another random comment at Josh he finally said "Look, we GOT you Pirate's Cove for Christmas, so SHUT UP about it!" and gave it to me :) So Justin and me and Eli and Deb played Pirate's Cove.

It took like 45 minutes to read the instructions and then about 45 minutes to actually play. My impression of the game is that it's a lot more luck-based than most games, but at least the pirate theme is pretty consistent in it and actually figures into the game play. Also, it's not a "gamer game", which means it'd go over better with non-gamers as just a silly fun pirate game. Deb won, with Eli a close second. So maybe I'll have to get some PP friends together to play it sometime!

After that it was about midnight. Everyone at the party (which was probly around 15 people) gathered in the basement and we counted down and toasted and kissed and all the traditional midnight stuff, minus the TV and the ball dropping or whatever.

I don't remember much of the rest of the night... I talked to Justin and Colleen for a while, and then ended up playing Dalmuti with Josh, Cory, Mike, and Seth, while Eli and Katy worked on puzzles in Games Magazine. Also, Josh is Tivo'ing that MTV videogames show for me so I can see how much they make fun of DDR players. Whee!

We left around 2:30am. I guess it's 2004 now. How weird! I need to go get a calendar...

If you can find a copy of Union Pacific you might enjoy it. Alan Moon is the game designer, published under Rio Grand Games. Alan initally published the game by himself under his white wind gaming company, and titled the game Airlines. It's a rail game with stock investing. But i'm also Alan Moon biased anyway :-)
