Dude, I could totally see kids saying those things (ESPECIALLY the "Oh, that's how they got the idea for Super Smash Bros"). Heck, I can totally see adults saying those things.

Here, I'll give you my favorite example of "People will say the craziest shit while playing video games":

The second nominee is Mario when he is riding in the ultimate weapon-- Kuribo's Shoe. This is a giant green boot with a wind-up key that is the coolest thing that has ever been. One night under heavy doses of narcotics, I was playing Super Mario Brothers 3 and one of my friends thought it would be funny to record what I was saying so I could hear myself later when I was coherent. Here is a transcription of the things I said:

"Oh shit! I got the shoe! I'm so invincible! Oh! Eat it, you bitch! You don't understand! I got the damn SHOE! It's the shoe! And look at how cute I am with my stupid plumber head poking out of the wind up sock! I am the cutest invincible shoe rider ever! Mario! Mario! He's in the ULTRA green SHOOEEE!"
This went on for about 10 more minutes as I kept bouncing back and forth on the level screaming nonsense about the damn shoe until the time ran out. We sent a copy to my mom. I heard she cried.

Violence makes games better, in my opinion. I don't understand how people play racing games where you can't shoot at other cars. If I wanted to drive, I'd go hop in my damn car. Games shouldn't simulate real life events that you could do if you weren't lazy. They should provide fantasy that you can't get in real life.

But the point was that kids don't appreciate good games, and if they would quit buying Mortal Kombat and the same recycled sports games over and over, and choosing a piece of crap because it has better graphics than a good game with mediocre graphics, the world would be a better place. At least that's how I see it.

I should've clarified at first that the Madden thing was a slightly different point.

Yes, I realized you were making a different point, I just thought it was funny how it contradicted your first point.

I think the problem isn't with "kids these days", but rather that video games have become a mass market phenomenon, and thus subject to the same forces that produce pop music (to an extent). Not helping matters is that fact that games have become more expensive to produce, making risky games more risky.
