craig - the gaming store in question IS yellow submarine. lots of warhammer stuff.
brad - no didnt see the atomx sign.
matt - dunno about the plushies, i have seen enough plushies to make your head explode.
chris - i'm not sure i saw a japanese settlers of catan though. i have seen japanese magic cards now... almost considered getting them for Mark but figured they wouldnt do him any good.
jonah - i already was in akihabara two years ago before already ;)
carl&oren - i have no idea how i am going to get this all home :) tonight i may have to go see what i can shove in what suitcases and determine how much room i have left...
weds - haha, i shoulda thought of you! you can have the gema and the akari, if you dont mind that the box is a bit ripped. when i get home, gimme your address and ill send them to you. they're pretty little (2x2x2 inches), from capsule machines, but still.
sorry, its just such a pain using this keyboard and this terminal. so replies are there. hi. bleh.
after i went back to the ryokan last night the funniest thing happened - a guy saw me with my Sega bag full of HK ufo plushies and was like "omg sega! where did you get that?" so i went to talk to him. turns out hes from britain and a big gamer... and there was another guy in the lounge who was from canada and was a big... weirdo. yeah. So DJ and i stayed up till like 1am talking to the guys (Julian the gamer from britain, and Greg the baseball fan from toronto/korea/whatever). Talked about video games and about baseball since they had gone to a Fighters game that night... and about like, working in japan and elsewhere, since greg teaches english in korea. it was a really weird but kinda cool conversation, and at 1am the desk guy came in like "dude you guys have to go to sleep", so we did. the funniest was that julian was all like "omg a girl gamer. there are NONE of those in britain" and also, the best part was he said something like "you know, i saw you in the post office this morning when the guy was asking you something, and i thought to myself 'she looks so confused, theres no way she knows japanese' and then you totally blasted out all this stuff!" and i was all like "but i was just buying stamps...?" it was still pretty cool, apparently he thought i was fluent.
so, today... we got up and out a bit earlier than expected so we went to the Bookoff in Otsuka to waste a little time after grabbing breakfast at the eki bakery. i didnt have a map of the bookoff location but i remembered from two years ago that it was ekimae and not hard to find. sure enough we walked out of the eki and it looked familiar, on instinct i turned left and then saw the big sign with the HON. so we went in. it was a fairly sucky bookoff. i saw a few things but decided nothing was at such a great price or so unique or important that they warranted carrying around all day. you heard me, i bought NOTHING at that bookoff.
we went to Akihabara after that... got there around 11:35ish, and James was meeting us at noon, so we hung out for a while. James was a tiny bit early and he also has a good haircut now! so we left the station and kinda went the wrong way. bought a few cd singles at a small store and then turned around. went the right way. woo! we went into a ton of stores. fun was Gamers, we actually went to the no joke 8 floor Gamers shop in Akihabara, as well as the old Gamers 2F store which was having a gigantic sale so i got a ton of cheapo L'arc stuff and other assorted junk. Between Gamers and Animate i think i did get my share of cute stuff, and you know what? They have Taiko no Tatsujin stuff in the anime stores! I have a big plushie Taiko! (met, i got something for you too) DJ has big plushie PNM thingies, no joke. I got a YUA thing for Pete-Diskozombie, if hes reading this :)
so we went into club sega, and we went into a few other small arcades, and some big game stores like Liberty and Trader and whatnot (Robert - we found one but not both of them). Also went into a few Laox stores because i insisted DJ had to see them. The games Laox toy store thingy had Shakkato Tambourine for 980 YEN. including the controller. so i got it! the computer one was really cool too. i love akihabara stores. we spent a while looking around at random stuff. they had tons of displays for random movies like LOTR and the Matrix (Keevon, i snagged a japanese Matrix Reloaded ad for you, hopefully it'll stay intact) eventually we were hungry and got lunch at mcdonalds, i got a happy meal with a hello kitty toy! so we bought a few more games and CDs and stuff in akihabara, and then james was bored and so we decided to head out, around 5pm or so i guess. i coulda easily spent more time looking around for stuff, i really hoped to find another IIDX controller, but oh well.
took the yamanote back to ikebukuro, dropped off some stuff at the ryokan, and headed out with james to higashi-ikebukuro. Hit Animate there since DJ wanted the PNM stuff, then went around to random places. James actually knew about the St. Tropez or whatever arcade we hadnt been in yet. turns out it is much more than just ufo catchers - it has a whole bemani hall on the second floor. There was a DDR EX, a IIDX 9, 3 PNM 10, and GFDM. (jsmes! you never played DDRMAX!) anyway, there were some really good guys plying DDR, they were fun to watch - for example the first guy did Gradiusic Cyber as his extra stage... with his jacket over the screen! and then the next guy to get up, AAA'ed Speed Over Beethoven HVY as his first stage totally cold. WITH NO BAR. how cool! the people were fun to watch and DJ got in line to play but we got bored so i went back to the Sega arcade and I won four more Hello Kitty plushies from the UFO thing, no joke. I feel kinda guilty that i can get them so easily now... it took me all of like 7 tries total to get those 4.
we went back to moai. James and I played IIDX together, we had to autoscratch because he cant do right scratch. he beat me by a lot on sync L7 but i WHOOPED HIS ASS on whatever the last song we played was. it was a lot of fun. i also played a set on my own of 7-key. i love 9th style, and i am so sad i have to leave japan in a few days. bleh. also, i really wanted to ask the people there for some of their bemani posters but i was too scared. sigh.
after that we got ice cream, and then james headed to the station to go home, it was like 10pm by then. DJ and i went back to the west and we saw a bunch of bands playing on the street, that was cool. then we got food at a Curry House.. ok no not really, a C&C curry place, and it had a vending machine in front for dinner tickets you give the people behind the counter and then they make you dinner. i had katsu curry and it was fabulous! now we are at the arcade doing net stuff again.
tomorrow we go to yokohama to muthos to hopefully meet people, and then dave kowalski is supposed to come visit me here in tokyo and hang out until sunday, and then monday baseball, and then tuesday go home to seattle blaaaaaah. i dont want to leave. as usual. i love it here. i know i always say that, but oh well.
