a thumbnail sketch, a sorcerer's stone, a mean idea to call my own
In reverse order:
I just got back from seeing the Harry Potter movie with my brother, and Kevin and Andrew, both of whom have not read the book yet.
I asked Kevin, "So, did you like it? Did you get it? Were you convinced Snape was the bad guy?"
He said, "Yeah, it was great, and yeah, of COURSE i thought Snape was it."
I still don't know whether the movie evokes the same reaction as I had the first time I read it and turned the page and saw the paragraph "It wasn't Snape. It was Quirrell." that caused me to put the book down and go "WHAT?!"
Looking back a second time, I think the major thing that really got cut out is significant character development on many parts, really. And I think the general plot doesn't suffer too much from that, it just feels emptier since we who read the book know the characters so much better. Like, I can look at the movie and go "Hey, cool, that's Lee Jordan," or Dean Thomas, or Katie Bell, Alicia Spinnet and Angelina Johnson, etc, but a lot of the secondary characters simply aren't named or expanded upon at all. It's understandable, I just wonder if they'll have to ramp up some characters and houses (Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff do nothing all movie) for the second book or change things a bit...
Anyway, enough of HP. The evening started with dinner at Kevin's new apartment, where we ate leftover thanksgiving food. Whee! Then we went to get tickets (at 8:15ish all we could get was tickets for the 10:25 - sorry Carolee, I hope you and Isaac got to see it) and go to Dave and Buster's to waste time before the movie.
It was really really crowded! I've never been there on a Saturday... I'm not used to having to wait to play games. There was a huge crowd around the Pump It Up machine. Kevin and I waited a few songs and got to play a round, and then we went off to do other stuff. After a while I got bored of waiting for Andrew to finish the game he was playing, so I went back to watch Pump. There were these seven guys, I think they must be around 16-17 years old (there with a parent, I guess?) who kept doing songs by pretty much stomping and jumping up and down to no apparent rhythm or pattern, which was annoying, I hate people who threaten the structural integrity of the machine... but I kept smiling and watching them fail songs and said, "Hey, you got a line going?" The kid said "We're up next." I said, "Ok, I'm after you."
Before I got on, one other kid was like "Hey, I saw you play earlier. How come when I step on the arrows it says I miss but when you step on them it says you hit?" I tried to explain that hey, just follow the music, it's not that hard. I stepped onto the machine and said "Hey, anyone want to play with me?" All of them were jumping to play. Whee. I did Puyo Puyo (lvl 3, which I full comboed, to "wow! you didn't miss any!"), Take On Me (lvl 4, which I missed a few, to "hey, you missed one, you suck"), and then Beethoven's Virus (lvl 5, the hardest song on "normal"... which I did 'cause they were like "do a really hard song, you're really good"). The other kid failed all of the songs, but that's ok. I had fun playing them - and I even beat the third and hardest song, which was cool. Then Kevin came to tell me it was time to go, so I ran off. It was sort of funny - I guess I'm not that used to having crowds of people watch me play these games that aren't people who are also good at it.
I mean, yesterday afternoon we went to the Beaver Valley Mall, ostensibly to have lunch with my mom and stepfather, but really so I could play DDR. I played for like an hour. There were tons of kids wandering around the arcade and a bunch of them were just awed by me playing... since I kept trying to do SSR songs or songs I can do tricks in. Whee.
Anyway... this afternoon we went to Squill for a bit, and watched movies for a bit (I have to call my doctor; I had heartburn and nausea again and I'm afraid to eat anything). Yesterday afternoon we went to the big mall, then to Ikea (whee Ikea! I got a new computer chair and a comfy chair, but I didn't find a new computer table and I think I still need/want one), then to Mad Mex, then we realized we were all exhausted so we came home and napped. I woke and played some more SimCity 3000. I built a mountain to look like Mt. Washington in my city. It's cute. You go over the bridge and through a tunnel to get to the other side of it and it has tons of parks and trees on the top of the mountain and all, overlooking the river.
I guess that is all, for now.
