wild ginger, work washing, mariners moyer mayhem

So my group went out to lunch today to celebrate Stephen's last day at Amazon, he was our group's intern, and a great one at that, I'm going to miss him. Anyway, we went to Wild Ginger, an upscale Pan-asian restaurant by 3rd and Union. It was majorly expensive, like the bill was $220 for the 9 of us for lunch. But the food was interesting and mostly pretty good. We had potstickers and spring rolls as an appetizer, and then for lunchy things we did family-style and got szechuan green beans, vegetable monk curry, some sort of lamb thing, seven-flavor beef, and then... duck. And people were like "why aren't you eating the duck? it is FABULOUS" and rather than explain my obsession with ducks, I ate a small piece. :( I pretended it was chicken. It wasn't awful but I really don't think I like to eat ducks because I mean, they're ducks :( I don't really like lamb either for the same reason. But, it was a nice lunch and I think Stephen really enjoyed it, which is what matters.

Oh, and I got to ride back with Yan driving, which is a lot like being in Crazy Taxi, he goes like 60mph through the random downtown Seattle streets, very scary shit. The afternoon was spent doing random stuff... a lot of it was a wash just because so many people were in and out of our office, and then Stephen gave a "how I spent my summer vacation" explanation of the stuff he wrote, and... then I called Josh and asked him about Gigantic (the TMBG movie), and the ball game and he was like "I don't have anyone to go with, do you still want to go?" and I'm like "Hell yeah," because the game's been sold out for months.

Hour or two later I'm down at US1, meet up with Josh, go to the game, it was PACKED. And it was a damned good game, except the part where Jamie Moyer didn't get his 16th win... when he (and Suppan) left it was 4-4, so neither starter got a part of the decision. I love watching Moyer pitch though... he never pitches all that fast, but he varies his speed and always has the same delivery style. I dunno. Anyway, so Mateo got the win even though he only pitched like one out, because technically he was taken out when the score was 8-4, right after Ichiro's grand slam. They put in Benitez after that and he almost gave up the lead, he loaded the bases and then walked in a run. UGH. They had Rhodes warming up at the start of that inning but then after the walked-in-run with 1 out, BOOM out comes Shigetoshi Hasegawa (yay!) and that was the best move Bob Melvin has made in a pitching change in ages. Hasegawa proceeds to get the next two batters out cleanly, stranding the 3 baserunners, and then pitches a flawless 9th inning, even racking up 3 strikeouts in that short amount of time. I really just have a ton of respect for Hasegawa.

Right, so anyway, both Mariners home runs were hit into our section or close enough. And also, I called them both :) With Boone, I had just said something to Josh like "Gaah, all Boone EVER does is strike out and hit home runs. He struck out last time, I bet he'll hit a home run this time" and BOOM he does. (I took a picture of the scoreboard on his 5th atbat (which he singled on) which listed his other four atbats... "Struck out swinging" "Homered to right" "Struck out swinging" "Struck out swinging") Then, with Ichiro, we had managed to get the bases loaded with our bottom of the lineup; MacLemore was just having an AMAZING day (he went 4-4), Wilson got on with an error, and Bloomquist got a dubious single too, and then Ichiro was up. So after the count was 1-2 or something, I said to Josh, "Watch, he'll just hit like 9 fouls until he gets a ball he wants, and he'll hit it out of the park." And sure enough after like 4 fouls, WHACK the ball comes sailing right towards us!

Early in the game, the plate umpire called MacLemore out even though it REALLY looked like he was safe. Everyone in the stadium stood up and booed the umpire... for like the next two innings straight :) I swear, like every time the guy called anything, people started booing... to the point where the trumpet would sound for "CHARGE"! and instead it'd be like... da-da-da-dum-dadum: "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" I couldn't stop giggling over how much we were all booing stuff.

Josh and I were trying to come up with Creedence Clearwater Revival songs for all the players. Because they use "Up Around The Bend" for Ben Davis... and I was like "they should use "Willie and the Poor Boys" for Willie Bloomquist... and they could use "Centerfield" by John Fogerty for Mike Cameron... though I haven't thought of many others (maybe "Born on the Bayou" for Gil Meche, he's from Louisiana... and a bad pun would be "Suzie Q" for Ichiro since he's "Suzuki"... hmm, shame we don't have Scott Rolen, then we could use "Proud Mary" for him. ("Rollin' down the river..."))

Yeah. So anyway, the game was good, and we won, and it was a jolly good time making fun of all the Red Sox fans there. (MAN, was the stadium packed.) Afterwards despite the trains' best efforts to create a huge human traffic jam, we got out of there and came home. Yay. Josh explained a whole bunch of stuff to me about how the amateur drafts, and free agency, etc works. It's kinda wacky stuff.

Now to go read more about Ty Cobb... this book seriously rocks. And tomorrow there's the Amazon picnic, which I'm going to with [personal profile] pauldf and maybe Eli. Whee!

You could just say you don't like duck. I don't like it.

Duck basically has a much heavier taste to it than chicken, so you have to treat it right.

In some settings I don't care for it.
In some...

Well, I won't force you to try. ^^

I once turned down duck for exactly the same reason.

Trouble is, it was at a business dinner in a very authentic Chinese Chinese restaurant (scary!) when the Mind Sports Olympiad went to Singapore and the Singaporeans were paying. In fact, I cried off the whole meal, plead illness and ran off and escaped. Happily I was pretty junior, plus it was the end of the event, and so could more or less get away with it. Definitely the low point of the trip away, though.

I'd probably do it again ('cos, hey, they're ducks) - but stay at the meal to chat rather than crying off sick.
