california: baseball and parties
so I got up relatively early today (like 9:40ish?) to call
shandrew to make plans for the Phillies-Giants baseball game. Whee! He and Linnea were finishing up an all-night puzzle hunt and then taking the bus from Palo Alto to the game, so I figured I'd just take the bus from Sunnyvale. I-Gene and I got up and went to SVGL to get cheap tokens, getting there just in time to get them... and there were already a billion people playing IIDX, geez. Orochi was on the machine when we got there, and I saw Corey/Ver2 and even said hi, and I saw DDRBot and his sister but didn't say hi, and there were several other people who looked familiar from B3 but it's not like I know who the heck they are. Anyway, we stayed there for about 10 mins and watched one game of IIDX and then hit the road so I'd get to the bus on time - we barely made it there. The bus ride itself was uneventful, there were very few people on the bus and I spent the whole time looking out the window being like "Wow, I'm in California."
I met up with Andrew and Linnea at the front of the park... they were wearing red and L had a Phillies hat on... I had almost worn a red shirt but decided not to at the last minute. Whee. We went into the park and looked around at random stuff for a bit, then went and bought scorecards, and I bought food too (OMG, you can get Krispy Kremes at the game.. so I just HAD to)... now, so technically I had a single ticket a section over from A+L, but the seats next to them were empty so I sat there "until whoever shows up". Well.. nobody showed up, not really :) There were 4 empty seats and at one point (like the 4th inning?) two chicks showed up and then they invited one of their friends to sit there too, but I got to keep my illegal seat... so that was good. Linnea and I both kept score, so we had backups!
Overall it was a good game. The Phillies won :) It was 4-0 Giants for a while and they slowly chipped away at that lead and it ended up a 5-5 tie going into the 10th, then the Phillies hit 2 homeruns with a guy on, bringing it to 8-5. Barry Bonds did manage to score in the 10th too but that was it, for a final 8-6. Wow! I really don't know who most of the Phillies are any more (although I mean, I know who Larry Bowa the manager is, and John Vukovich the 3B coach, also from the 1980 Phillies!), but it was still fun to watch. And the Giants really are a very good team. (I felt bad for their first baseman JT Snow though... he's a left-handed 1B wearing the cursed number 6! And he went 0 for 5 or something today) The ballpark is really oddly shaped though, like the walls are all uneven and at weird angles. The RF wall is really high and the LF wall is really low, etc. And I hadn't seen a thing where the bullpen practices right along the 1B/3B lines in a while... also the Giants' dugout is on the 3B side and the visitor dugout is on the 1B side, which is also weird. The view of the bay from the park is pretty nice though. Our seats were right behind home plate, just really high up. I got sunburnt pretty badly because I was an idiot and didn't use sunscreen. My arms and face are really all that got it though.
Anyway, we cheered the Phillies a lot, which was kind of amusing to be the minority... and then after the game we took the Caltrain bus thingy back to Palo Alto, since that's where Andrew's car was. We talked about a bunch of random stuff on the long bus ride, and I felt a little bad for not letting them nap since they'd been up all night, but I mean, I've been friends with Andrew longer than almost anyone else I know (tenth grade I think? That's now 11-12 years ago), so it was good to talk to him. Eventually we got back to the stop and then I-Gene and Robin came to pick me up and we came back to San Jose... and I-Gene and I headed out to
angelbob's party.
WHEEEE IT WAS S0 GOOD TO SEE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT I LOVE SO MUCH! In no particular order I got to see
jd5p,
ts4z,
msde,
mj2q,
bk2w,
namshubwriter and his fiancee,
sarahnade, and Matt Andrews, and Rem, and ANDY PRESBY!!, and various other people, like
plymouth, and of course
angelbob himself, and wossname Patrick (
phantomdancer?), and whoever else, and if I've forgotten someone please don't kill me but it's late and I'm really tired.
Yeah, so I was tired when I got there but then I got energized by seeing so many people, also I got to eat food, which helped. I had these ham and cheese french toast croissants Noah made me, and then a bunch of steak that Brian cooked, which was really good... and some snacks... and then I pretty much spent the next few hours there just talking to people and catching up and reminiscing and whatnot. A lot of random stuff was going on in the backyard, mostly involving a lot of naked or almost-naked people breaking a pinata and setting stuff on fire and lounging in the hot tub. Me being me, I just stayed inside and talked to people. I got a lot of hugs from people and just a lot of good feelings from finding out what everyone's up to and whatever. I got to play with Mark S's hair and it's so long and nice now and I will be all sad if he has to cut it off again :( And Mark J is coming to Seattle when I'll be in Japan and I'm all sad over that too :( And Tim is still every bit as funny and wonderful as ever, and man, I just hadn't seen Kevin C in a GAZILLION years, same for Jonah, geez. And it's always such a pleasant surprise to see Andy, he's so funny and weird and cool. And Matt now has blue hair. And and and. Oh there was this funny moment where there was this one girl I didn't know there, so we're talking and she says something and I'm like "Oh, by the way, who are you?" and she says, "I'm V." I'm like "V, like the letter?" "Yeah. Just V." I say, "Oh, that's really cool! *pause* Hi, I'm D." And everyone breaks out laughing. :)
I kept getting all freaked out and spacey over just being around so many people again, I mean, it's just been so long. I've gotten used to Seattle and being around cool people who've been my friend for like a year, maybe... being around people who have been my friend for 8-9 years is just so different and so cool. It brought back so many memories. And it was like I knew it was just a simple timeslice, like I knew after a few hours I would have to leave everyone again. I did invite them all to come to SVGL tomorrow but who knows if any of them will take me up on it for real. I do hope Ryan and Carisa make it as they weren't at the party.
I-Gene felt really tired around midnight and so he said he was going to leave soon, so I figured I should probly get going too, on the notion that the longer I spent there the harder it would be to leave anyway. But of course it took me 20 minutes to say goodbye to everyone what with promises to visit again, encouragements to come up to Seattle, lots of hugs, etc (I think I said goodbye to Mark at least 4 times), so I felt really bad for I-Gene by the time we left. He took it well though I think, and we hit the road and came back here and Robin's letting me use her computer and I-Gene just went to crash and I'm going to do that in a bit.
So tomorrow we're heading to SVGL from... I dunno, noon or 1pm, lunchtimeish, until who knows when. I kinda want to hit MGL too if there's time and the 3K2 machine in Union City... anyway, I WILL play IIDX 9th tomorrow. Yeah.
Goodnight.
