The Great Edit Tournament... or how Burning Heat got burninated
oh man! Today was a looooooooong day. It started when Mwinzi called me at 12:30 and actually woke me up. Haha. So I got up and got ready to go... and he showed up at like 1:30 and we got out the door. Stopped at Jack in the Box for food since we were both starving. Got on the road... traffic sucked. :( We got to Narrows like RIGHT at 3pm. We saw all these people standing outside and realized "OH! They're qualifying!"
So we ran inside, found Farren, who was like "Great, I need help. Have a clipboard." So haha, I ended up judging the qualifying rounds with Amber. The qualifier was supposed to be an 8-foot edit of Burning Heat, but he left the edit at home so he used his backup qualifier of B2U OG. (It's a shame - I actually played through both of those a few weeks ago and I thought the Burning Heat one was far superior). It went pretty well though. I thought it was a damned hard edit but some people like Jeff full-comboed it with 11 greats :) Foy and Jedi tied and got to play it again on Right.
I got to draw the double elim brackets out! Except I didn't really know how to. I kinda screwed it up at first but then fixed it and did an okay job. I wasn't sure how to denote "loser of this match goes here" and Steve said "Letters are lame!" so I drew little circles and squares and triangles and hearts and spades and eventually a sunshine. I wanted to draw a duck but was afraid I'd screw it up. Anyway, it went ok and I made a big bracket poster. Whee!!! And I helped Farren get the cards for the rounds together and I sorted songs and stuff and tried to be generally helpful finding people and sorting papers and stuff. But after a while I wasn't really necessary since Mwin and Amber had the judging down, and we had most of the cards done... so I mostly just hung out asking if there was anything to help with from time to time, and watched the table for Farren a few times... and then wandered around playing some Bemani games. Did a buncha MAX2 solo, and some doubles on 5th mix, and some BMIII (Duuuuuuude I got 99k on a buncha songs and nearly FC'ed Era Nostal Kobako, right scratch YO), and a tiny bit of DM, but it was weird, the machine got all fuzzy when you hit it, which doesn't go well with being a machine where you hit drums. I guess I also got to hang out and talk to some people I don't see often, like Nykkel, and Tamarik, and AlphaConquerer, and people. And I pretty much watched the last couple rounds... lots of interesting edits in there. Some of them were downright evil but there were a few I hadn't seen where I was like "Holy crap, that's cool". Sometimes it was neat to watch people laugh at the steps.
Anyway, when the smoke cleared, Jerrad won, Foy was second, Jedi was third. Despite that Jeff was top seed, he ended up losing to Jerrad in the semi-finals in a REALLY CLOSE MATCH where they were 1-1 on songs and then tied a third song and then replayed the third song on shuffle and Jerrad won. The funny thing is that I can't really remember a lot of which songs were played in particular or which ones were really interesting because I mean, a lot of the time I was just watching going "whee! fun steps". Mwinzi's songs were in general leg-twisters or very jumpy, and Farren had some really neat twists and a lot of gallops. I do remember Nykkel having to play the really tough Breakdown edit that I had a lot of trouble with (and later Jerrad getting like 4 greats and a good on it!)... and people having a lot less trouble with the Long Train Runnin' edit than I did. And Crackoon's Maxx Unlimited edit did get played and it seemed like the people playing it enjoyed it. I liked Mwinzi's Aoi Shoudou edit... and I remember that Tada and Foy almost tied on it! Mwinzi's Abyss edit was INSANE though. And nobody played B4U, which was my favorite of Farren's insane edits. Sigh.
So after it was over, I played some session with Nykkel and Allan, which was fun. We did one set of all Be For U songs (begin, チカラ, and Break Down), and then we did session again of bonus track.. I forget what the song is called, it's the first song in the scroll list, it's like a slow j-rock ballad... and it's kinda basically like Natsuiro EXCEPT IT LASTS LIKE 4 MINUTES OH MY GOD. I had to switch legs for the drum pedal like three times :) Hmm. Oh ya, and I played 桃色片思い a bunch more times for James (COME BACK JAMES WE MISS YOU), it's up to #6 on the DM player's best...
It was interesting to see how many people turned out for the tournament. 16 people but I hear like 3 of them came up from Spokane/Idaho... and then there was the Portland gang... so it was really like a lot of non-typical entrants. And it was kinda cool that there was NO fussing over sensors. I guess most people figured that any misses or whatnot you got was pretty likely your own fault for not sightreading very well. I guess in general it was just really well-run for a small tournament and I think everyone had fun. But I'm a little sad that a lot of people weren't there...
Afterwards, I went to IHOP with Tamarik, Allan, Nykkel, Farren, and Mwinzi. Except for Farren we all had banana-related pancakes, and it was cool to hang out with everyone... so cool infact that even after getting out of the restaurant after sitting and talking for an hour we stood and talked for another hour outside, until it was like "holy crap it's 11pm". And I still don't know if Mwinzi's parents have killed him for getting home at midnight. I hope not! :( It was really fun riding with him because we seem to have really similar taste in Bemani music so he liked my Bemani tape a lot and we sung along to songs and talked about random stuff. Yay!
During dinner Eli called to go "Can I open up your package?" I was like "huh?" It turns out Amazon DID deliver my copy of Harry Potter 5 today! Since I was in Tacoma I was like sure... and then so after I dropped off Mwinzi I was in no rush to get home since I figured I wouldn't get to read the book anyway. So I went to Kenmore because I really wanted to play DDR. It was pretty lousy though. The 2P up arrow is still hosed, and I had random issues playing on the 1P side my first game. Plus there were a buncha spectators and not of the good sort (even worse, some of the SMOKING IN YOUR FACE sort). So I didn't get ANY new AA's today at ALL although I cut down some of my great counts on AA's I have already. Eventually I left out of frustration and came home.
Something I realized there is that like... so if you go to somewhere like Kenmore and the arcade is empty and you're like "DUDE, DDR machine all to myself" and you start playing... it inevitably attracts other people who want to play. And suddenly you don't have a DDR machine all to yourself anymore. Yeah.
Well, it was a long day. But it's kinda cool how I've managed to be involved in like every DDR tournament since I moved here, either as an entrant or an admin. Yay! And hopefully tomorrow I'll get to read Harry Potter.
I didn't bring my camera. I don't think anyone did. Sorry :(

How bad is the problem up there?? Is it only on rare occasions like today when there are crowds, or all the time..??
I'm glad the tournament was so fun! I wish I could go to one of the Seattle tournaments, especially a themed one like an edit tournament or a challenge tournament. I'll go to one eventually and surprise everyone!! :-D
