Carnival, Day 2

Will probly need to edit this in the morning for coherency. Hiyo.

Got up, went to campus for the Mobot races. Ran into a gazillion people out there, the most notable of which being [profile] bk3c, one of my dearest friends from highschool/CMU, who I didn't know was coming to Carnival! And Iain Keddie, one of my other dear friends from undergrad who disappeared from the face of the planet for many years and resurfaced for Carnival! And then also the whole Ragnarok group. Chris and Jenny and Matt and Drew and Jayen and Deryck and I forget who all else were all out there. I really missed Deryck so much, a few weeks ago I think I realized that Steve kind of reminds me of him. Hm. Anyway. So it was one big happy reunion. The mobots themselves weren't much to write home about. I think only one got up to gate 10, none finished, there were some amusing ones though: one hit the decision point at the bottom of the hill and sat there twitching for several minutes. And one looked like Pikachu and couldn't find the line. And then my friend Warren/Chris was training a little black rat to run through the gates. His rat's name is Pavlov and it is SO fucking cute! :)

Matt and Deryck and Eli and I went and got lunch from Taste of India and brought it to Wean. We relocated the lounge to the Wean Lobby because the lounge smelled AWFUL. So we ate some food and then I got into a game of Citadels with Matt, Drew, Deryck, and [personal profile] rupes. It was way fun :) In the meantime a whole lot of people showed up in the lobby... [profile] zml and Qarl and Simon and [personal profile] rehana and [personal profile] chamois and a bazillion people. They started other random card games. I got to see tons of people walking by in the lobby, it was neat... Marcin Jeske was here! And I didn't know he lives in Portland, so I'm gonna visit him sometime. And I went to visit Mark Stehlik (the CS undergrad advisor), and that was awesome as always... He said he'll write me a recommendation for grad school, and it will say "DUDE! DEE ROCKS! ACCEPT HER!"

Deryck had to leave because his band (Miroslav) was playing at Carnival, so [profile] combinator took over for him in Citadels. (YAY MARTIN!!!!) Eventually after Citadels ended we got a game of Puerto Rico going, and eventually ended up skipping the Miroslav concert. We suck. :( But so Drew and me and Adam and Qarl and Simon played Puerto Rico and it ruled and I won again, this time 56 points to Adam's 55. Matt sat next to me and advised me for half the game though, so I can't really claim the win. I actually built three of the HUGE buildings, which was amazing, I was just rolling in cash.

Lessee, Boggle was going on after [profile] platypuslord showed up, and bridge was going on, and eventually I finally got to play a few hands with my awesome awesome ex-bridge-partner [profile] mj2q and Dan Tilkin and other fourths. It was fun. Hrm. After that Mark and I went to the TG and found a bunch of other people, including Eli and Alex, so the four of us went off to check out the They Might Be Giants concert.

The line was HUGE! It was going all the way outside the UC and that was just the "current students" line! Eeek! So we decided to go to Midway for a while. I took pictures of the KGB booth, running into [personal profile] redglasses and Mark Tomczak and people, and we got funnel cake from the APhiO booth and I actually didn't know ANYONE in there, it was wacky. We ran into bunches of other people there too, including Debbie (my big), and [profile] ef2p and [profile] cortneyofeden, etc. And Larry Greenfield and his brother and Zarf and Eeyore and people. And [profile] allwein and [profile] rmitz, and dear lord have they both lost a TON of weight. Whee! I took several booth pictures, there are some really pretty ones this year. Eventually we went back and got into the "not-current-students" line, even though Alex is still a 4th-year CS PhD student. We were in line behind Stephen Brookes and his family and THAT was odd. (He was my 15-312, Programming Languages, professor, like 7 years ago.) But he talked to all of us anyway. And I saw [profile] sui66iy and [profile] sundaygray and [profile] danitapgh and took pictures of them and all, and they followed us in, but we immediately got lost finding other people. Eventually I ran into [profile] arashink and he found [profile] sorakirei! But I didn't get to talk to them at all :( The concert was in the University Center gym and it was just huge and full of people and very exciting and impossible to hear anyone. I also kind of got to meet [profile] bn29's [profile] zagthaar but again, I couldn't hear anything. I went and bought the No! and They Got Lost albums because they were selling CDs 2 for $25. Eventually the concert started, and it was exciting. For the sake of [personal profile] damion and [personal profile] zaph and [personal profile] jish and anyone who might care, I did write down a setlist:

Istanbul / James K Polk / Bed Bed Bed / John Lee Supertaster / No! / Birdhouse in Your Soul / She's Actual Size / Older / In The Middle x3 / FINGERTIPS!!!!! / Dr. Worm / Drink! / Particle Man / Cyclops Rock / The Sun Is a Mass of Incandescent Gas / Spider / The Guitar / No One Knows My Plan /// Robot Parade / John Carter / Ana Ng / New York City

Notes: I was wearing my Apollo 18 shirt! And they played a ton of stuff from Apollo 18! I was all happy! They SKIPPED a verse of Birdhouse In Your Soul, no joke. They did a lot of silly shit, like "I always thought avant-garde was French for 'bullshit', but you'll like our next song..." and then they played Fingertips! That was SO cool because I never thought I'd hear that played live. And they had wacky silly drum solos ("Press or say 6 if you want to hear Stevie Wonder from 1974-1981 drum solo! Press or say 7 if you want to hear Stevie Wonder from 1981-1986 drum solo! Press or say 8 if you want to hear Animal from the Muppets drum solo!") Overall it was exciting, and I am actually really pumped to see TMBG again in Seattle in a few weeks. I had really forgotten how much I used to like them... but then John Linnell got up there and started singing Birdhouse and suddenly it was like 11 years ago and I was as excited as I was at my very first TMBG concert. And we jumped up and down and it was awesome, and I went and stood with Ben for a whole bunch of songs (Ben and I went to sooooooooo many TMBG concerts together in highschool and college that I've lost count) and it was like "Dude. We're old. But this is cool. Just like old days!"

After the concert I saw a bunch more people (hi [profile] mistergone! We are old and bitter!) and sadly managed to lose Carl again, and ended up going to Mad Mex with Mark and a gazillion Asylum folks. (Eli was supposed to go hang out with his ex-girlfriend.) Sat mostly with [profile] vandebeast, [personal profile] dgr, [profile] georgejas, [profile] shoebox_bird (HAHA, we were BOTH so shocked to see each other!) and kept going over to say hi to [profile] zyrain and Eric Stein. Other people were there too like Ethan and Cortney, and Rob and Jen, and [profile] kaote, and [profile] redhairedgirl, and Bryan and Megan, and Christina Simone, and RAWR others I forget who. Oh, and totally unrelated at a nearby table were Scott Robbins and Shell Kruvczuk and Vince and Becca. I drank a margarita the size of my head on absolutely no food and got REALLY dizzy/buzzed... eventually I ate chips and a huge burrito and kind of fell asleep on Ben's shoulder for a while and then I felt better. But man, I was out of it. Still, it was fun, I guess I'm getting a reputation for this :) Afterwards Mark gave me a ride back, and we thought of stopping at Trey's but it was dark so we didn't. Rawr. I got to hang out with Mark though and I'm really happy about that.

Wow, it's late. Tomorrow I get to see Nick! And hang out with Carl! I hope! Whee!

I still do not believe you are actually staying at my house ;-) Ralph and Eli claim to have seen you, though, so I blame my early morning schedule.

So glad you are having fun!!!

I was at the concert, but only for a few minutes. Then I saw a ton of people I hadn't seen in ages, and we left to talk. I looked to see if I could find you but no such luck. I think we'll be playing Apples-to-Apples here tonight, so I might see if I can dig up your cell phone number and invite you over.

I think that's the second time TMBG has played Carnival, first was spring 91 if I remember right.
