Carnival, Day One
I am currently sitting at my favorite spot in my favorite computer cluster in my favorite building on my favorite campus in my favorite city. It's leisuresuit.weh.andrew.cmu.edu because solitude.weh.andrew.cmu.edu is no more. Still. This is home in a way that I can't possibly explain to anyone...
And a few minutes ago I said goodnight to my bestest friend
dvarin, who I am just SO happy to see again :) And
rjmccall showed off the majorly cool KGB t-shirt with "October October Revolution" on the back, with a DDR parody logo. They're SO cool. I really hope
naufiel can sell me the judging one! And then a few minutes before that, I was in the CS lounge playing Puerto Rico with
jcreed,
rmitz, and Carl, and
rupes and
rehana were hanging out, and Rem showed up too, and there were a gazillion people in the lounge also playing cards and hanging out! And Jason said the best thing ever: "Deanna's being pedantic, but adorably so." And
buoren showed up and his hair is all light now. Oh, and I won the game of Puerto Rico, THAT was unexpected but cool. I like building large buildings. Oh, and before that I ran into
gothfru and
fraterrisus in Wean outside SCA dance. Weird!
Before that I was at Tessaro's with
ralphmelton, Alex,
visionline, Kevin Watkins, Eli, Honus, and Dave Rochberg. I had a yummy burger and lots of people had ribs. We waited for like 45 minutes for a table, which would have sucked normally but instead it was cool because it meant we got to hang out outside and talk about stuff. Apparently Kevin's been in hibernation mode but he's coming out of it now because he's almost in thesis proposal mode. But Honus was like "WTF, Kevin will come to dinner to see you but I haven't seen him in five months?" "I haven't seen him in five months either." "Yes, but you live across the country." Anyway, Kevin has a way cool Japanese cellphone that lets you play Super Monkey Ball. No joke.
Before Tessaro's I was at the Kiltie Band concert, where I ran into a gazillion people. I got to sit with Brett and Clintron and Ed Latimer and all. Kiltie Alumni unite! The band sounded AMAZING... they played the Holst Suite in E Flat again and it was much better than I remembered us doing it when I was in band... the solos sounded amazing, especially the clarinet solos. Dan Fernandez and Jeremy the Freshman did a great job. I guess I always paid attention to those because of Carl... anyway, the music was really amazing to listen to. I almost wanted to cry because my god it was just the band and the songs and CMU and Kiltie and Carnival and people and wow. Although... they did the John Williams piece again and I thought Susie Cribbs was going to do the scream and she didn't - whoever did it was nowhere near as good as her. :) After the concert I talked to a gazillion random people. (I have to talk to you more at some point,
mrpeck! And hopefully I will run into
puuj and
fleaplus and Lacey and
mygrane all again at TMBG tomorrow or something!)
Yes, this is incoherent... anyway, I started off the afternoon by going to Dr. Melnick's office. My teeth are in AMAZINGLY good condition, so they said... I just had to have them scraped and cleaned and X-Rayed and they were pretty happy with it all and nothing hurt, too! I'm so happy about that... and I think I might just take them up on the idea of coming back at Homecoming for my next dentist appointment :) So after that, I came to campus and wandered around Wean saying hi to people. It was SO COOL. I ran into Kevin K and Ethan/Jeremy on the way to campus from the dentist's office. And then a bazillion more people in the lounges (Yay for
chamois and Benoit and
cdinwood and Charlie and
rjmccall and
kahare and
bpr and
skt and Nirav and Joey and
sleepsong and
jvittes (my Wean escort :) and
platypuslord and Andy and Erick and Rem and Audrey and Lars-Chan and Kaustuv and Dave M and Chris C and Marty and well, EVERYONE). It's like being home. It's like being where I belong again. I mean, I know I don't really belong here anymore, I've moved on and there are plenty of new people who don't know me, etc, but... but, I just wanted to cry when I walked into Wean. Or when I saw Carl tonight. Or everyone. I've been hugged more times today than I was hugged in the past month or two.
(A funny side story: I walked into the cluster when I first got to campus and wanted to sit at "my spot" except there was a guy sitting there. Okay... I went to the lounge and met up with
jvittes and he said "Hey, there's this guy working at Amazon this summer that you need to meet..." and I was like "Jon Giloni?" and he goes "Yeah." So I'm like, "okay," and we go to the cluster and... the guy sitting in my spot in the cluster... is jgiloni. GO FIGURE. So I was like "Hi, I'm Deanna. You're working in my group this summer. If you have any questions, just ask, ok?" And then later it turns out he's going out with
skt. SMALL WORLD! Whee.)
Errr... yeah. :) I love this place. I'm so happy to be here. Mobot races and TMBG tomorrow, I can't wait!

I expected "Hi, I'm Deanna. You're working in my group this summer. And you're in my seat." :-)
