no time to write - dm5 sunday
i do not have time to update. i have to sleep. i have to go to work tomorrow. i have to return to reality. this sucks. but it was a great weekend, a great week, etc.
in short, i went back to IZ today. i wore my otakon 2k2 shirt since i wore it the sunday of dm4, god that feels like A LIFETIME AGO. i judged the challenge mode tourney, which rocked but apparently didn't rock as much as past ones. got to hang out with farren though, at least. crackoon ruled all of the challenges pretty much and totally won, and keevon did the most impressive thing by getting a FC with 8 greats on V standard STEALTH, holding a printout of the stepchart in front of his face. minwiz was the only person to pass one of the more insane pass/fail counting challenges (get an equal max combo to the number of goods). And Robert wore his Trogdor shirt and made the first challenge involve Burninating Heat. also I got these bunny ears at rite-aid after getting dayquil, the ears were like $2, so i wore them for the whole day like "i'm the easter bunny, yo." oh yeah, memo to myself, the awesome IZ tech has a name - his name's steve. we went to ihop afterwards and it was fun, and then i came back here and talked to i-gene for like five hours and now it's way late. i wish i could let him stay in town longer but i HAVE to get back to focussing on work. gotta finish my sakuracon costume like TOMORROW. i'm so doomed :( there's just no time to do everything i want to do. i'll write more tomorrow.
AND YES I AM GOING TO POST THE PICTURES EVENTUALLY. PLEASE STOP BUGGING ME ABOUT IT OR I WILL CRY.
The Longer More Coherent Version
Okay, so Amber decided not to judge Oni, so we all slept in... by the time we woke up, got people out the door, etc, it was like 1:45pm, whoops. So after running into traffic on 5, we got to IZ around 2:15. Picked up sandwiches at Subway (we did NOT want more Jack In the Box), where we ran into Darren and Meghan. Went to IZ. Saw that people were basically hangin' out 'cause Oni ended on time or early. Had a slightly sore throat, ran to Rite Aid to get some DayQuil, where I saw these bunny ears, cheap for like $2. so I bought them and wore them all day. "I'm the easter bunny, yo."
Anyway, Challenge got underway. The general way things worked was, we all went to the mini theater, and Robert explained the challenge to everyone, and then we either all went out to do it (and judge), or people went out 4 at a time, etc. Farren and I judged on one machine and Dianna and Pete took the other. I made a point of writing all the Japanese song titles in Japanese so it'd be even more obvious which people I'd judged, heh. 19 people entered. The challenges were things like.. ack, I was going to link Robert's post but I think our BBS isn't viewable to all. So let's see.
We had first, Burninating Heat Std, get as close to 66/66/66/x/x as possible, out of 200 steps. I tried this later and could NOT good attack to save my life. James won this one. Second was WWRY Standard, but you couldn't use the bar and you had to keep your left foot on the left arrow and not hit any other arrows with it, perfect attack. I tried this and got dizzy from dropping down to handplant so much. Then there was Mikkeneko rock, get as low a machine score as possible. Charlie got like a 5.8million score. Then Senorita Standard... get an EVEN NUMBER on every step type. This was bullshit and got thrown out, though Laura and Jedi came close (Laura had a zero, and Jedi had 3 OKs). Then Firefly, L4R, no bar. Vanity Angel Std Flat 1x, have your max combo equal your goods. Mwinzi was the ONLY one to pass this one. Then Destiny Lovers Std Solo Reverse 1x, great attack. I forget who won. Then Stoic Standard, 290 steps - get within 5 of 200 perfects, within 2 gets a bonus point. James had 201, I think Jerrad had 198.
At this point I think we were down to 8 people. This is when Nykkel pulled the "Stepchart Challenge"... people could select V Standard or Love Love Sugar Heavy. They had to play on stealth with a stepchart printed out and pass the song. I think only 3 people passed (I-Gene did, and I think Jerrad did also, and as I mentioned, Keevon full-comboed it with 8 greats and the rest perfect. That was AMAZING. I was standing there judging it like "OMG, he's never going to pull this off," and then we saw the score window and it was just like "HOLY SHIT." Especially since almost nobody else PASSED, let alone did that well).
Anyway, after that they were down to 5 people, and did Daikenkai Std Boost, get as few Perfects as possible. I-Gene got like 17 I think and was eliminated. The finals weren't as exciting as they could have been. First was Love ♥ Shine Light Dark 1x, pass with the lowest max combo... but tiebroken by number of perfects. Second was Graduation Heavy Hidden Dark 1x, PA. Ryan and I forgot to set the machine up to diff 2 so it got a little screwed up, whoops. Then there was 1998 Heavy, but played as the first song of Naoki Platinum; your score was your number of perfects MINUS your number of marvelouses. Heh. The last one is hard to explain, it involved playing Cartoon Heroes Standard, and as Robert's post said, "Options: Do you feel lucky, punk?" It was pretty wacky. Eventually I believe James totally won and annhilated everyone, Jedi was second, Jerrad third, and Keevon fourth. Lots of random prizes were given out, and then some leftover prizes were just given out to people. I got a Barbie watch and a copy of You Don't Know Jack 2, for being a judge. Well, lots of people got Barbie watches, that was pretty funny actually.
Quotes I wrote down:
(After a coin toss for a tiebreaker): "Can we check the sensor on the coin? I think it was broken." -- zmode
(After giving out prizes afterwards): "And by the way, DDR Magic 6 is going to have a Trophy Buck division." -- shakespeareone
Afterwards we went to IHOP with like 25 people or so, and that was fun, we took a bunch of pictures and I got to hang out with Portland people some more. I had yummy strawberry pancakes, and it was fun; Fuj and Aaron and Steve met up with us there, and then Fuj came back with me and I-Gene, and we stopped by Jack and the AM-PM again for Fuj to get Icees and food, and then got back here just as the last Sunday Dinner people left. I-Gene and I stayed up talking for a few hours and trying to burn stuff to disc except that my computer has no burning program, which sucks :( Oh well, so I ended up burning some pictures for him and Robby, and then we all went to sleep around like 3am again. Bleah.
