DM5 saturday
yo, so I'm too tired to write anything coherent.
EDIT> I made this entry more coherent. Rawr.
I went to DM5 today. I judged for 12 hours straight, no joke. Showed up at 10am, helped set up, did some stuff with papers and all, and basically sat on the left side of the machine facing the minigolf course judging people's matches for the entire tournament. As a result, most of the things I'd talk about are really other people's stories. Like about the matches, and the sensor issues, and such. I guess one thing that was a big disappointment was that only 40 people entered the 64-person tech bracket, so one and a half rounds pretty much didn't happen. The other disappointment was that the t-shirts didn't get printed, so I still don't really have a DDR shirt I can wear around here. I might go buy a DM2 one even though I wasn't there... hmm.
I played a ton of Para in my off time though, infact that's ALL I did in my off time. I had a lot of fun though, I almost FC'ed four nonstop songs, I missed ONE arrow, rawr. And Derick and Howard were there filming things and they were like "whoa, that was really good" after my insane combo set. We had a lot of Para people actually, which was really cool, since I got to play and shadow a ton. I'm feeling pretty good about my Para skills lately, much better than about my DDR skills. Oh, and Jeffy Sylffor showed up in his fursuit and did Para and hung out and it was really funny and fun! I got some great pictures of it. And Jeff and Minwiz and I were paraing in the background while Derick was trying to film stuff, and I got in a set with Rumi and Pete at some point too.
So I spent the first shift judging qualifiers and some matches with Steve. We played "the scrolling game", wherein you try to aim for the song and get it to stop exactly on it. I got it once on Luv To Me (that and SOB were the qualifiers). Met took over Steve's side and judged with me for the next 8 hours. Because we judged for so fucking long, Magic Mike gave free Magicafe dinner to me and Matt and Allan and Robert, so I got to eat dinner with them, that was cool. Let's see, there was some wacky stuff that happened. Warren the Juggler did an exhibition of Sakura hidden shuffle heavy while juggling clubs, which I-Gene got a video of. Michele actually got all the way to the winner's bracket semi-finals (I expected Becky to do that... stoopid Ryan and Becky didn't show up at all, though Danny was there). There were some insane matches. I got to judge Lith a lot, and he had a TON of black flags, the worst being when he got a great on the very last note of 5.1.1. There were no AAA's that I know of. One match was Lith vs. Keevon, they played EOTC and got 1g/8g, and then Sync Oni and got 2g/3g. That was insane. After it, Allan asked me "So, who won?" and I said "Kevin." I judged Dyaus a lot, and he vaguely may have gotten screwed over by the sensors, which sucked. He lost a bunch of songs by exactly one Great, too, which was a shame. Hm. Ironically, the 4 people who stayed at my house that entered DM5 all had to play each other - Dylan and Fuj were on my machine and Robby and I-Gene were on the other. Dylan played all of his songs on 3x, even like 180BPM songs, and people were like "WTF?" And Farren ended up playing Pete one round, and Minwiz shortly after. I was like "Stop it, how can I cheer for you if you play against people I also have to cheer for?" Heh, and Minwiz and I-Gene played together, and it was like "Well, whichever of us wins goes up against Lith next! Whee!"
Oh haha, then there was also Keevon's t-shirt - I had suggested on the BBS that since it was Keevon's birthday, everyone should sign his shirt and he'd be a walking birthday card. Well, so someone wrote "TEEM SEATTUL N00B" on his shirt, right, and then Fuj had a marker and people just started writing all over it. I wrote "Birthdays are a crutch!" I-Gene wrote "YOUR MOM" on it and apparently literally a minute or two later Keevon's mom, who happened to be there to watch part of the tourney, wrote "YOUR REAL MOM :)" on it too.
All of the later matches could really be considered highlights. It's EXCITING to watch people who can like, finish Rhythm&Police with 13 greats (Dyaus), or Love Heart Sugar with 3 (Charlie), or Burning Heat with... well, some WAY LOW NUMBER (Lith), etc, etc. I'm glad I judged all day so I had front-row seats for them. It was neato. But I felt horrible about those matches where people thought the pad screwed them over, it was the pad I was judging on, too... first Dyaus got some boos we weren't sure were his, and lost his match against Charlie, and then Keevon got some boos we were pretty sure weren't his, and lost his match against Tanya. That really sucked, Tanya got 7g on La Senorita Virtual and Keevon got 7g and 2 boos, and so people were sitting around for like 15 minutes trying to decide what to do about it... I felt like any solution would sort of suck, the best that was offered was "call this a loss but make it best out of 5 instead of 3", but eventually Keevon just stepped down and ended up placing 5th. My argument for why the pad might have been okay was "Well, I judged Lith here on this pad all day and he hasn't missed a single arrow," but then after Keevon's mishap, Lith got a miss or two on that same pad in his match against Jedi... So, that sucked. We switched to the other machine for the final few matches. Bleh. At the end of the evening, Robert said to me something like "So, how are you doing after 12 hours of judging?" and I was like, "Dude, I'm doing great. How are YOU doing, fearless leader?" and the look he gave me was priceless. :)
Oh, after the tournament we went to Red Robin with like 30 people or so. That was cool, we got to sit with Lith and Shelley and laziejim, and Crackoon and Miyuki and CorranFox and all, and there was a lot of "buh ne ne ne" jokes and stuff, overall it was really funny but I'm just blanking on what. Oh, and we told the waitress "so we have this friend, his birthday is today, you can't miss him, he's wearing a t-shirt with crap written all over it and he has a beard." So they brought him a sundae and sang to him. Oh, and I got a GREAT picture of Foy, but that is another story.
Oh, so the qualifiers were Speed Over Beethoven and Luv To Me, as I mentioned. Robert even said to me, "Well, the one song is the one everyone hates, and the other's one that people can practice on USA..." and he told me, and I didn't tell anyone else, because I am good like that. God this entry is incoherent. Oh, maybe some of you wonder who won, too. Lith placed first as expected, Jedi was second, Charlie was third, Tanya fourth, Keevon fifth, Dylan sixth, and umm... Dyaus was seventh or eighth and Shakespeare was whichever one Dyaus wasn't, I think. Yeah.
You know, I got really exhausted for basically just sitting there all day watching DDR matches. And speaking of which, I really do like judging! It's way cool and it means I get to see all the matches and sit up front and stuff. rawr. Although I practically had to sit on Dianna to keep my chair in the last round, heh.
oh yeah and I don't know whether I should mention it here or not, but a certain boyfriend of a good friend of mine said to a certain person he didn't like, "hey, can I talk to you for a sec?" at the end of the night and they went off and talked and now WHEE! I think they are on good terms again and that means we can all hang out and be one big happy family! well... more like they all went to get drunk together after Red Robin and I had to come home :( bad timing! but oh well, I will get to hang with them all next time, I'm sure.
Oh, so after Red Robin everyone came back here, well, the 6 people staying here, and Keevon came over too, yay, and Amber and Fuj and Robby and me and I-Gene and Keevon sat around talking for hours and we watched some videos on Robby's videocamera, and then kicked Kevin out and now we are all going to sleep because it is LATE AS FUCK. at least I amn't judging oni tomorrow so I can go to IZ at 1ish instead of at 10 again. i am so tired. i may edit this when my mind remembers what i actually did today. (EDIT> Yes, this is edited, incase you couldn't guess. Mostly just made a little more coherent.)
