Deanna's Bemani Party 3rd Style, and Sunday

Okay, so yesterday I had another one of my big invite-the-Seattle-Bemani-Community-over parties.

I've mentally counted and I believe 35 people were there at one point or another: aaron, steve, rayna, amber, dylan, max, kiefer, farren, nykkel, rumi, matt, DJ, darren, meghan, pete, tanya, charlie, ray, jerrad, okaeshi, keevon, keiichi, bobby, zor, kimbot, slant, laura, travis, tada, crackoon, mwinzi, joelle, jedi, shakespeare, and foy. Pretty insane. Anyway, let's see... I spent the afternoon shopping for some party stuff and cleaning up, and Aaron ([profile] arsenic44 and Travis showed up at like 4:45. So I got Travis set up on Frequency and Aaron set up on the NES and finished cleaning a bit more. Kiefer was pretty early too (and unlocked Science Genius Girl expert on Frequency for me! It's fun!), and Laura ([profile] laurii). Laura's mom gave us an orchid plant, which is kind of weird, but it's nice, and we'll keep it in the window I guess.

I forget the order in general that people showed up. We started out with IIDX, I think because Mwinzi and Farren were there fairly early... IIDX 6th style the whole time, in the living room. As a lesson: don't play with Mwinzi, he's too fucking good, and will make you play flashing 7's. :) But I did have fun playing with Kiefer - I even got an A on some 5 or 6 star song with him, but I forget what. The dining room stayed NES for a while and then became Super Puzzle Fighter, which I owned at for a while, until Tada caught on to how to play and then he owned the room at it for a while. Around that time, Rumi ([personal profile] megami) and Matt and and DJ and Pete and Darren and Meghan and all showed up, and so Pete and Rumi and I decided to take over the dining room and do some PPP. Despite having two PPP controllers, which was cool, it became clear there wasn't really room to play it as a game, so we put on the PPP2 video which had arrived that morning and did some dances.

In the meantime there was a need for a third TV game room really, so we tried to set up the 13" TV in the basement but I'd forgotten that I don't have any way to hook RCA into that TV... so the only system that would really work was the NES. (So would the genesis but I only have like four games for it.) So we ended up bringing down the NES. I think it was a big hit anyway... I saw people playing Dr. Mario, and Marble Madness, and at some point I came down to find the entire room singing along to Megaman 2. That ruled... I actually started singing along on my way down the stairs, even. :) Hm, and I brought down my light gun later and whee, Duck Hunt still works!

Steve and Amber ([profile] flotastic) and Rayna showed up a little later than expected, but it worked out mostly okay. Steve is superawesome and made a big birthday cake, since he works/worked in a bakery. Max and Kiefer's birthday is Monday, so I thought it'd be cool to like, have a cake and sing to them and all. He also made turkey cupcakes! I finally ate mine earlier today and it was SOOOO good... like a chocolate cupcake with a cookie attached to it and tons of frosting in the shape of a turkey. MMMM. Anyway, so after the cake had been there for a bit, we managed to get Max and Kiefer both in the living room, and then Amber and Eli and I lit candles on the cake and carried it into the living room and started singing happy birthday really really loudly... and we got everyone else to sing too! And Max and Kiefer blew out candles, and we served cake, and it was awesome!

Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, Amber's moose got kidnapped AGAIN. I have no idea what actually happened, and take no responsibility for the actions of other mean moosenappers at my party. :)

Anyway, SSBM had been going on in the living room for quite a while at that point, and Dylan really wanted to play Mario Kart, so we set that up in the dining room. I really forget what happened in the interim, but at some point people were like "we gotta play Pictionary soon 'cause people need to go home early". So they started setting that up. I really didn't WANT to set it up but people assumed I would, so I got a little annoyed and left, until DJ fetched me like "okay, we're set up, come play!"

So Amber had made up cards with random DDR song titles on them... so she held the whiteboard, and Steve had my Hello Kitty purse with the cards in them. And DJ was just adminning. We had "Team Couch", basically the people sitting on the couches (it was pretty funny how they fit 8 people onto our two couches which usually seat 5). I think Team Couch was Rayna, Travis, Laura, Foy, Allan, Mwinzi, Crackoon, and Dylan. Team Not Couch was me, Kiefer, Farren, Aaron, Max, Jerrad, Keevon, and Okaeshi.

Good times, good times. Our team kept getting the REALLY tough clues to draw. Like Keevon got "Mr. T (Take Me Higher)" and was like "WTF?!?" I drew like 5 times... two were easy (Whistle song, I drew a whistle; Witch Doctor, I drew a witch hat), 2 were medium (Turn me on, I drew a person and a lot of arrows in a circle and got to write "turn" when someone said it, and Vanity Angel, I drew an angel and Farren luckily got it 'cause he rocks), 1 was fucking impossible (Stay... I was like "WTF?" So I drew a traffic light with an X over the green light. I forget what else I drew. It was really bad, my team didn't get it, but SOMEHOW Foy got it! Geeeeez! So the other team got a point for it.) Farren got stuff like "My Baby Mama", and "air" and "Trip Machine" (which Kiefer pulled out of nowhere!) Heh. Whereas the other team got stuff like "Butterfly" and "Face" and such. What was funny on our side was when Aaron drew "The Reflex" as a guy kicking something, and Jerrad got it... or better, when Aaron got "Insertion" as his card and just started cracking up... before he could draw anything, Keevon yelled "INSERTION!" and well, since it WAS Insertion, we got a point :) Heh. Max drew anatomically correct "It's Raining Men"... and some of the drawings for things like "Fantasy" and "Sexy Planet" were definitely keepers.

Overall it was more fun than I expected, and it was sort of silly to yell out things like "PARANOIA REBIRTH! KICK THE CAN!" at every opportunity. (Or once when there were a LOT of "Kiss" songs in a row I was like "Kiss the Can!")

After that I broke out Super Bomberman 2 on the livingroom TV. I did okay for awhile, but Aaron won a game and got a punch glove as part of Roulette and as a result he kept taking me out FIRST THING each round because he could just punch a bomb over to me and it would explode 2x2 and I couldn't avoid it. REALLY FUCKING CHEAP, AARON, YOU KNOW. :P Oh, and yeah, so around then Dancing Jedi and Joelle and ShakespeareOne showed up, which was funny because I had no idea they were coming, and apparently Foy or Tanya or whoever gave them directions gave them very BAD directions and they were wandering all over the neighborhood until they saw the 3rd Mix marquee in the window that I'd lit up with my disco light. That was cool - it was a beacon. :)

Sometime after Bomberman, Bobby put Tetris Attack (err... Panel De Pon) on his SNES in the living room and that went on for a really long time. I got to play several rounds because I played at a big handicap. I felt kind of bad since I was able to beat people but I was on like level 2 and they were on level 5. But I was glad 'cause I got to try to learn to play it better and all. After a few matches I played against Nykkel and he gave me the 3-level handicap and I beat him and I felt kind of bad, so I stopped playing. It was fun to watch some really good players, like Crackoon, anyway.

Hmm, I'm blanking again on other stuff. At some point we put Taiko no Tatsujin on the living room TV and that got played for a while. I wandered between the floors a bit at that point since it was starting to thin out, crowd-wise. Taiko is neat, I can't wait until my set of it shows up. It's really cute, and has katakana for like "don! don! dokodon! do ka ddon!" under the little "hit me" circles. Jason (Zor) and I were chanting along with it for a bit, much to the chagrin of the people playing. Hmm... at some point I managed to get Bobby and his stuff out of the basement, and we set up GF/GF/DM session mode. The home DM controller is just a pain in the neck and a half - I really don't think I'm going to bother getting it. If anything, it hurts my legs AND it's just really frustrating.

Crowds thinned out a little bit more at that point, once we took down Session... at that point it was just me, Mwinzi (who had bussed here), and the #bemani people. I was on the verge of kicking them all out, but Bobby was packing up his stuff and Mwinzi hadn't seen OHA before, so I put it in to show him while waiting for Bobby to finish... and then Bobby was like "OH, you have to see Technic Beat!" So we put that in and he played some songs like Mappy, Pacmania, Dig Dug, etc... and I tried a song... and then Scott started playing, and just kind of never stopped. In the meantime the rest of us sat there talking until like... uh... 6am. Jason was making up these weirdo lyrics to some songs in the game ("Phone Dead Room" in particular was just hilarious, though it might be that it was 5am at that point), and everyone was well, telling me random gossip about random people, which of course I just listened to, not really knowing most of the people. A funny quote (to nobody else but me) was:

Jason: "I work at VMC testing X-Box games."
Kim: "And I work at Nintendo doing games testing as well."
*pause*
Bobby: "Uh... I sell plushies on Ebay."

Anyway, people left at 6, I had mostly cleaned up anyway by then so I did a cursory glance around, and then I totally crashed.

Today, Sunday - woke up around 3pm, and have been on the computer for most of the day. I uploaded/resized/etc my pictures from the party, which I'll post in a friends-only entry shortly, and caught up on BBSes, and DAMMIT it turns out Dylan took my copy of Mario Kart home with him! and I dunno, I idled on IRC a bit even 'cause these #bemani people are... interesting.

I was off the computer to have Sunday dinner with [personal profile] katybeth and Seth, and [profile] thatmathchick and my [personal profile] eub, who cooked African bean/nut soup/stew and cornbread. After that we went to Sunset Bowl to help celebrate [personal profile] jeliza's birthday. I hadn't seen her in a while, and her hair is no longer blue! Did get to see [profile] seanmcguire and [personal profile] rubylou, and after bowling one game (I managed a 113 even though my leg hurts), played some DDR - I even got Deb on the machine with me, and I played all easy songs, and she actually passed a few of them on her very first try! She caught on very quickly, seriously. But I don't think I have a new convert yet. :)
