deanna has neck spasms
Mar. 12th, 2012 11:57 amSo much stuff since I last updated. I went to Disneyland a few weeks ago (feb 25) for a puzzle hunt, and then played in Iron Puzzler the week after. Lots of good things about those, I really should write an entry or two, if I wasn't so lazy.
I'm writing now because last night I went to the hospital for the first time in a while. (I think the last time I was in a hospital for my sake was in Japan, that time I had a 103-degree fever and couldn't walk without getting dizzy. Well, and when I got hit by a truck of course.) I basically had this truly terrible neck pain starting spontaneously Friday afternoon and going through the weekend -- I drove to San Jose for Tim and Jenn's games thing on Saturday, mostly survived the pain, also did IKEA and picked up a DVD tower... yeah, I dunno. The problem is that Friday and Saturday nights I pretty much didn't sleep. I'd wake up about every 2-3 hours because I'd roll over and it'd hurt like hell.
Sunday afternoon I went to Japantown for the 1-year anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake. I got a tempura-tonkatsu bento in one of the random Japanese restaurants (Kushi Tsuru... what kind of name is that? Crane on a Stick?) and then went outside for the memorial ceremony. Mostly it was local politicians and Japantown leaders talking about things, and they led a prayer thing, and then there was a moment of silence at 2:46pm. There were TV crews around and whatnot, and I was even wearing a Rakuten Eagles t-shirt and holding an omamori in my hand but I kinda held back from the crowds, I didn't really want to talk to people. It was tough for me, I started crying for a while mostly because I was thinking about last March and how happy I was to be back in Japan and lifting people's spirits then.
So then I went home. And my laptop bluescreened. Twice.
I spent basically the entire rest of the afternoon/evening sitting on the couch watching movies and backing up my laptop with the idea to wipe it. Watched Music and Lyrics, and Major League.
Around maybe 8pmish, after Jenny got home, I started feeling really crappy. Like, the soreness in my neck was acting up and it felt like there was something trying to burn down my head. And I was having some trouble breathing. So I called the 24 Hour Nurse hotline on my insurance card (OMG I HAVE INSURANCE) and described what was going on (this was mostly my paranoia from having read a webpage about meningitis). But she's like "You have this horrible neck pain for 3 days, can't turn your head, are feeling short of breath, and you don't have any specific injuries that caused it? I suggest you go to a hospital ASAP and get this checked out."
Jenny called a cab and we went to St. Francis, where I came in, told them what was up, went to see an ER doctor. They took my blood pressure and my temperature and whatnot and then a doctor essentially poked a whole bunch of places around my neck and was like "tell me which of these hurts?" including some spots that actually had NOT been part of the hurting except when he poked them they hurt like hell! So he's like "You have some kind of muscle strain or neck spasm. It's not meningitis, don't worry, I know what THAT looks like. You'd have a fever and a bunch of other stuff in that case. We're gonna prescribe you some good drugs to alleviate the pain and calm you down a bit so you can sleep -- also, you should put a towel around your neck when you do sleep, okay?"
So they gave me two pills to take and a prescription. The thing is, I still didn't sleep great -- couldn't fall asleep until 2am, woke up at 5am with neck pain still, got up at 8am because my computer was making noise and I just couldn't get back to sleep again after that.
But, I went to Safeway this morning and filled the prescription and I'm now drugged up... we'll see if it helps. One of the things is Valium I believe, so this should be an interesting day.
