New Year's evaluation, resolutions?
Jan. 8th, 2012 02:54 amI guess last year when I wrote resolutions I even said straight out "This year is impossible to predict", so...
1) Walk 15 miles a week.
That totally didn't really happen except for when I was in Japan, though I did make an effort to walk whenever possible.
2) Spend 30 minutes a day, or at least 4 hours a week, doing stuff in Japanese.
I started off the year doing it with Kanji Kentei DS and such, and I started doing Twitter halfway through the year in Japanese, and I spent 2.5 months in Japan, but in reality, back in the US, I'm not sure how much I did. More than zero, but probably less than the 30 minutes a day in general.
3) Cook more. Or rather, in other words... start cooking. Period.
Total fail. I just don't think cooking and I go so well together. And my new job didn't help that :)
4) Do at least two active hobby activities per week.
Failed at this too, but that's mostly because I didn't really establish myself in Seattle well enough to get established with those sorts of things.
A) Organize all my damn stuff, and pare down more of the crap I don't need.
I kinda did this! I mean, I think everything I own is now in one place for the most part, which was totally not true a year ago. And I got rid of a ton of shit before moving, too!
B) Get a job.
I did this too! It just wasn't in Seattle.
C) Take a step back from my life in Japan and then try to collect thoughts for writing about it.
I didn't define this really well, so I didn't really do it per se...
2011 was an extremely frustrating year in many ways. The best parts of the year, to me, were in Japan, even when I went back following the earthquake -- that's probably the thing that I'll remember forever, seeing my JHS kids again, etc. But my trip in the fall was also great except for a few little things. I'm not sure what this means for the future. I mean, working at Tagged for the summer was great (better than it is being full-time now, sigh) and getting to know new people and a new city and all. But I still feel homesick for Tokyo. Will that ever stop?
Though if I can pinpoint one thing from the entire year that defines the year for me in terms of accomplishments it'd probably be Microsoft Puzzle Hunt 14. I'm just very proud of our group for managing to put that on, and on a personal level I think I did a fairly awesome job with things given that I was out of the country for so long, but I still pushed 9-10 puzzles of my own into the hunt and helped make a lot of things happen like the remote beta, etc. Running in The Game was also fun.
I wish I didn't associate my time in Seattle this year with being in the suburbs and being depressed. Alas.
As for 2012 I basically am going to do the next few things
1) Lose 30 pounds
2) Take a Japanese class
3) Write my book
I don't really have other things that could be considered "resolutions". Mostly, things like... I want to get involved in various things. You know, pick a few things like ballroom dance, volleyball, softball, board games, puzzling community, and if I can manage to get myself established in even 2 of those communities/activities, I should probably consider it a success, right? (Puzzles may or may not be easy -- I mean, I know people here and there are a lot more events, but I don't have a team, which is going to be hard.)
I want to go visit a few more stadiums this year just because I might as well keep up some of my bad habits from Japan, right? It'd be nice if I could see some of my former beloved NPB players, and actually I'd really really like to see if I could catch up with Kazuki Nishijima wherever the hell the Dodgers throw him this year. We'll see, I guess. I don't think there's any plan for Japanese college players to come to the US this year, which SUCKS TONS and means I'll definitely have to take a trip or two there to catch up with people.
I don't think it'll be hard to keep up to walking a ton since I've gotten back to a lifestyle where 10 miles a week is the norm, not the exception :)
Also, I'm dead serious about losing 30 pounds. That actually IS the big one for this year.
