It's hard to talk about the San Jose work week itself so instead I'm going to try to recount where we ate this week, since that also kinda denotes the days.

On Sunday night we went to another hotel's restaurant called Mosaic, with 5 out of our 6 (no Josh), but plus Mike and plus Cody's dad. (We kinda had the Seattle side of the table really.) The waiter at the restaurant kept calling me "young lady" and Joris got me to drink a bunch of wine.

Monday we had lunch in our hotel (also no Josh IIRC), at The Fountain. It was just as mediocre as the first time. I infact had the exact same thing, and it was just as mediocre. I then went for a walk to the bank and to Walgreens and stuff, though.

That evening we had dinner at Original Joe's, with a huge party -- it was not only 5/6 of our group (all but Mirman) but included Drew, and zml, and mhock and his girlfriend. This might have actually been one of the best social outings of the entire trip -- the food was great and the company was great. I was excited to see people interacting (although to be fair, and maybe surprisingly, only Josh made a point of truly mingling). We had a funny discussion about "if you could meet any mathematician or computer scientist, who would it be?" For lack of anything better off the top of my head, and the caveat that it had to be someone living, I went with John Conway.

Tuesday, I swear to god, we had lunch AND dinner both at The Grill in our hotel. Lunch I had steak, dinner I had salad. It was somewhat surreal. Lunchtime had no Mirman, dinnertime had no Josh but added Mirman's girlfriend. I remember dinner mostly because Joris sat next to me, and he had surf'n'turf, and the lobster smell made my salad taste funny to me (just like it had the week before when we went to Gordon Biersch for dinner, I sat next to Jason, and he had crab cakes that made my salad there tasty funny too). I was very tired, I remember that part too. I'd just gone on a walk around the neighborhood for a while to clear my head, and then it's like "...we're having dinner at the same place? Really? WTF..." That evening we also played Tichu for the first time in a while. Joris had Jason as his partner, so Cody and I completely killed them again, just like we did on Sunday. It's kind of a running gag now how I'm either the best or most lucky Tichu player in the group... because Joris and I are unstoppable as a pair, but if I'm not partnered with him, I take him down pretty hard. Also I was wearing my Pirates t-shirt, and some guys came up to ask us about "our Rummy game".

On Wednesday, lunch was at The Cheesesteak Shop, with all but Mirman. The music was good and the Amoroso rolls are good, though the sandwiches weren't perfect... at least we got Tastykakes!

That evening we had dinner at an Italian place I forget the name of, that the guys had discovered over the weekend. I had some really fantastic ravioli there. We went there because they had gluten-free stuff for Mirman's girlfriend... and then somehow she ended up with pasta in her meal anyway. It was kind of a happy dinnertime. Joris and I went on a walk after dinner together, to go find "the dome" that I'd been seeing from our hotel window. Turns out it was City Hall. It's not very exciting at night, but we still had a good walk there anyway, I think.

Thursday sucked though. We had some pastries and stuff in the morning since our CTO and director of Engineering came down to visit us and see the workspace. Eventually lunchtime hit around 2:30pm, and Jason and Joris and I went to Hanuman for Thai food again. (It was better this time, though maybe more spicy.) Dinner was around 9pm... all of our group except, bizarrely, Jason, who was feeling sick. After walking for a while and not deciding on a place, Joris elected Josh as our leader, and Josh led us back to a ghetto-like Mexican place called "Muchos!" that was next door to the Cheesesteak Shop. OH MAN WAS THIS PLACE GHETTO YOU HAVE NO IDEA. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about it was how we got there around 9ish or whatever and it was empty, we ordered food and took over a table in the back... and after that weird people started filtering in, mostly drunk and swearing about the bathroom, and by the time we left the place, the entire outer room was full of really skeezy looking people. We have no clue why it was so full but it was kinda scary. Lots of freaky people on the streets of San Jose at night, to be honest...

Friday is today and I came back to Seattle. It's so weird to be back. I've been spending so much time trying to wrap my head around our functional programming language (and mostly yelling things like "IF IT TYPECHECKS IT WORKS. WHY DOES IT TYPECHECK AND NOT WORK? MIRMAN? HELLO? TYPECHECK, BITCHEZ!") and basically kind of just being around the team that it's weird not to be around them now. I dunno. Hard to believe the summer is kinda coming to an end, and our conference is in like OMG 12 days.
