I got to play a board game today!
Dec. 23rd, 2007 02:35 amYeah, so, after work today I met up with John and Cat again, this time in Akabane. We went to the Anrakutei yakiniku place that's right by where I work, though I had never been in there. See, Cat has all kinds of crazy allergies (wheat, soy, eggs, etc) so I figured that yakiniku SHOULD be fairly safe -- I mean, it's just meat on a grill, you know?
As it turns out, the default is for them to serve it with sauce or a marinade of some sort. So, I explained that Cat had allergies and could we please get some plates of meat with no sauce or anything, just meat. They were really nice about it and were able to fulfill that, and then the three of us sat there and just grilled lots of meat and some veggies and drank some drinks and it was generally fun. The other great thing is that now that I have checked out this place, and it's also really close to where Carl and Oren will be staying so I totally have to drag them there! Wheeee.
Afterwards we couldn't really decide what to do so I suggested we go play Settlers of Catan, since I bought a travel copy of it a week or two ago and I haven't played real board games in like FIVE MONTHS NOW OMG. Since it's difficult to find a place to play a game in Akabane, I dragged them all the way out here to my apartment in Middle-of-Nowhere, Saitama. It was cold and raining and I feel really bad about it, but on the other hand it was nice to have people out here to see my tiny little apartment.
ALSO the travel set is AWESOME. It's all magnetic, even the stuff that looks like cardboard. I didn't know there was such a thing as magnetic cardboard, you'd sort of have to see it to understand what I mean, but you could basically flip this board over and nothing would move. Yah, it's small, but so what, that just means I can easily throw it in my bag and take it somewhere, and also it'll actually fit on a coffeeshop table here in Japan I think.
I think the game ended in a draw of sorts, I should have won but was stupid, and John and Cat had to go catch the last train back towards Tokyo so they had to leave, so we just called the game. Still, yay, board game!
Not much else to say about today. Work was decent, though I'm really sad about one of my students not showing up since that means I won't get to talk to him for like three weeks :( Another student asked me for help with writing a title/summary of a paper he's submitting to a journal about his company's processes for software quality assurance. That was really funny.. I tried to explain "Well, see, it used to be my job to do this sort of thing..."
