dr4b: (bookshelf)
Chiho, my neighbor-landlady, came over today for a bit to use my computer and internet to figure out what the hell to do with my bicycle that was crushed in the truck accident. Turns out the sodai gomi people want like 6000 yen to dispose of the thing. Sadly, my apartment is a complete and total mess, and I felt sort of ashamed of it. On the other hand, we found a place that will recycle the bike for free... if we bring it there. It's really close to the hospital I went to after my accident. Conveniently, that hospital is one of the places Chiho works on in her rotation, so she's going to take my bike over there sometime on her way to work. We win!

So, in order to do something about my awful apartment I headed over to the Diamond City mall to get some more storage space thingies. I picked up a rack for the bathroom to keep my toothbrush and paste and whatnot in, and I got the aforementioned 5-drawer thingy.

But by the time I was done with all that it was time to head down to Shinjuku to meet up with Dave Ventura, this guy from CMU ETC that [profile] aefre had suggested I talk to a long time ago, and after like four months of email tag we finally managed to meet up for dinner. Yay. Dave found a great okonomiyaki place that was way too warm but the food was fantastic. I decided to play it safe and just make normal okonomiyaki (which came out great) rather than trying to make Hiroshimayaki again (which we watched people at another table fail to do).

Sadly, though, I think whatever talent I have for magically being instant lifelong friends with CMU CS people doesn't necessarily apply to people who didn't do their undergrad there. Not that Dave wasn't a nice and pleasant fellow to chat with, but I sort of felt awkward talking to him (I found myself babbling a lot and feeling like I wasn't sure what to do about the silences), as if we really didn't have anything in common to talk about. So we basically hung out and chatted for an hour or two and he headed back home. THOUGH, a really funny part is that he apparently occasionally hangs out with Wada-sensei, who was my very first Japanese teacher at CMU, like ten years ago now (yikes!). She apparently lives somewhere in Kanto, so Dave's going to pass along my contact info to her. It'd be so funny to see her again!

Anyway, after that I went to Tower Records. I resisted the urge to buy a DVD of the 1981 Fighters-Giants Japan Series (though I may go back and get it someday), and resisted the urge to buy the 70th Anniversary Chunichi Dragons audio set (complete with EVERY Moeyo Dragons from like what, 1950 to 2005). I did get two Fighters CD singles from this year, and Moeyo Dragons 2007.

I was on my way out and noticed this huge Ellegarden display. They had the Eleven Fire Crackers 2006-2007 Tour "After Party" DVD... for 3500 yen... I couldn't resist and bought it too. And now I've been watching/listening to it for the last hour or two. It's basically 2-3 hours of live footage and completely fucking awesome. I had sort of forgotten how much I love these guys... I hope there's a concert of theirs I can actually go to while I'm in Japan, dammit.

(Here's something funny: Eri has this CD of random music in English that she plays on repeat loop in our GEOS lobby for background music, it's mostly things like Avril Lavigne and other such stuff. Anyway, there's this one song on it that I swore was some Brit-rock song, at least I knew it was familiar but I could never place the band... turns out it's just "Lonesome" by Ellegarden and I hadn't heard it in FOREVER so I forgot it was them. That in itself should be a testament to Takeshi Hosomi's talent and English skill.)

Oh, I also found out that one of the random things left in my closet is actually a space heater. Which is good, because it's FUCKING COLD out at night these days -- like 10-12 degrees, which is like low 50's in that other scale. Though, by the time I wake up in the morning the sun shines in and makes it kind of hot in here. I can't win, I guess. But, either way, the space heater should help a little bit -- I can keep it on until I go to sleep and then turn it off, maybe.
Is it illegal to sneak into a minor league baseball stadium and take a picture of yourself in the dugout?

(Lotte Urawa Stadium)

Honestly, the door was open to the stadium AND the gate was open to the field. I didn't even see any other people around.

I'll explain a bit more later; for now I really need to go do laundry. Then I will hopefully post more pictures and a map and all from the crazy 30-kilometer bike ride I took today.
