Japanese baseball, and other stuff
Nov. 9th, 2004 01:25 pmThe mlb.com coverage of the Nichi-Bei series has officially gone from "kinda neat" to "downright infuriating", as very little is written at ALL about any Japanese players and there are no pictures of them either (aside from things like "Here's Ibata trying to catch a baseball while one of our brilliant American baseball players makes a dashing slide into second base"). Even on the Japanese sites covering the event it's all pictures of the MLB and comments like "Holy crap, Ortiz hit the longest home run in the history of Japan!"
(I looked at the MLB coverage of the Nichi-Bei 2002 series and 50% of the pictures are of Hideki Matsui. Geez.)
On another note, welcome the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles to Sendai, and to the Pacific League for the 2005 season. This actually makes my idea of a Fukuoka-Sapporo baseball itinerary even better, as it reduces one of the Osaka-area teams (since the Buffaloes and BlueWave merged), and puts a real stop on the way between Tokyo and Sapporo, and gives me an excuse to take the train and stop in cities along the way like Fukushima, Hirosaki, etc, rather than maybe being lame and flying to Sapporo from Tokyo :) I wonder if I have any friends crazy enough to come with me on such a trip.
Uh, so anyway, yesterday evening we did pub quiz. We're thinking of trying to expand our team since there are other teams there with 8-9 people who don't seem to be penalized, and we thought there was a 6-person limit. Quiz Guy says that the new two-bingo format is probably going to be the norm for the next couple weeks because it makes it more possible to finish up by 10pm. Next time I'll have to ask if quiz links are ALSO going to happen every week, because they SUCK. The good thing is that we actually won one of the bingoes this week, and even won the tie breaker (The theme for the week was "Seattle Trivia", and the tie-breaker was "What date is on the cornerstone for the University of Washington?". Surprisingly, despite our table having 2 Washington natives, and 1 UW PhD student, I was the one who actually knew the answer, 1861. I guess it made up for being absolutely useless for the rest of their Seattle trivia). The only thing is that since there were so many bingo rounds and so few teams, I think we got like $30 for the bingo. Ah well, I can't complain too much. Also, to be different I had a fish burger and a Bailey's irish cream coffee, both of which were pretty good. And while I'm observing random things, Quiz Guy is really cute.
I came home and did the PP thing. Found 5 skellies on Frond. Just 5. Unikhell and I got some people to fight them, and the prize was poe and one clothing item. Interesting. I also sat around SFing a lot. It felt really futile -- some great SFers I couldn't beat at ALL (like Khell) and some people I was just laying into (like Kurosh). And Potato is really scary with a foil. ("Ahh, foiled again.")
