choirs, cannonballs, baseballs, etc.
Nov. 25th, 2003 02:13 amWarren Spahn passes away at age 82. As a southpaw meself, I declare a moment of silence.
I came up with some great ideas for Christmas cards this morning. Now I just need time to make them :)
I finished reading You Gotta Have Wa, by Robert Whiting, last night. It was pretty good. The book is basically about Japanese baseball, although it's about half about Japanese baseball really, and about half about how Americans fared and their interactions. The best part is that every Japanese baseball superstar he talks about in the book (written in 1989, so most of them were playing in the 80's) are either managers today or in some cases (like Kazuhiro Kiyohara) are still playing. Neat.
I finished reading The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn, the night before I went to Pittsburgh. It was a really fabulous book, and I can't remember if I talked about it here. It's like the story of a guy growing up in Brooklyn, who becomes a reporter, who covers the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1952 and 1953... and then goes to visit them all 15-20 years later and writes a book about them. So it's a baseball book but it's also just a story about some guys. It was really well-written and very entertaining and I can't say enough good things about it.
As for tonight... hmm. I went to choir practice. I felt bad since I'd missed our tenor sectional and last week's rehearsal, but it turned out I wasn't the only one. So I sat in the second row instead of all the way in the back... it was really good, there was this old guy who sat next to me for the second half of rehearsal and he told me I sounded great, which was surprising and out of nowhere. Also, your FIRST reminder:
Northwest Chorale presents Handel's Messiah
Friday December 12 7pm
St. Stephens Episcopal Church
4805 NE 45th Street
Saturday December 13 7:30pm
First Presbyterian Church
7th and Spring Street
never fear, I'll post those again in a week or two, but since I do know where/when they are I figured I'd just post it now.
Puzzle Pirates continues to be fun. I keep getting TONS of compliments on my outfit, lots of strangers have been just randomly coming up to me like "I love your outfit! You're so colorful!" to which I usually respond "Hi, I'm Rainbow Brite, I'll be yer gunner for the evening," or "Janthina stars in 'Rainbow Brite Blows Up The World'!" or "Rainbow Brite stars in 'Jannie Get Your Gun'!" or whatnot. I'm a goofball. Anyway, I had fun pillaging with my crew tonight and with Carl, and with Farren and Nykkel later on.
