Saturday: Party. Sunday: Dinner.
Dec. 9th, 2002 12:04 amWell, I took a ton of pictures of the Bemani party, and put them up here. I doubt they'd really be interesting to most people though, except maybe a few Bemani freaks, and people on the BBS.
Anyway, let's see... I got up, got dressed, cleaned up the house a little, took my VCR out of the entertainment center circuit so it could be attached to a TV in the dining room... got out and marked some of my NES games... played some IIDX 6th Style... sent Eli off shopping for party stuff. He arrived back around 5pm, along with the first couple party people - Allan, Robby, Eiji, umm... yeah. At any rate, people filtered in pretty steadily for the first hour or so. There was a lot of game playing. I want IIDX 3rd Style; Eiji brought it over and it's REALLY cool! Kiefer took apart my NES to clean it out since we were having trouble starting games... and Robby took apart and cleaned two NES controllers... and people were cleaning out my cartridges for me. It rocked. And here I felt all guilty for not testing my carts all week. :) See, this is the best way to get your NES cleaned out... host a videogame party.
Anyway, I might still be a little fuzzy on what order stuff happened in, but there was IIDX and NES games for a while, and at some point Gaffect and Aaron decided to bust out the GameCube and put on Super Smash Bros. Melee. There's been a long arguing thread about SSBM on the DDR BBS so there were some funny things between people... but, it was a lot of fun, lots of laughing, lots of PIKA! PIKA! and the like. I even played for a while even though I totally suck at SSBM. In the meantime Kiefer was organizing a pizza order. So I started shouting "PIZZA! PIZZA-CHU!" along with the game's "PIKA!" :) There was IIDX in the dining room for a while (more like, Robby and Laura plugged it in while nobody was watching, or something).
Then there was pizza.. we put IIDX back in the living room right before the pizza got there and nobody cared because there was pizza, so Allan and I played a whole bunch of songs. In the meantime, CorranFox (Mike) showed up, which was really funny 'cause see, Robby had invited him over, but I really had no idea who he was. But he turned out to be really cool (and he knows
zannah too or something). And Tanya and Charlie and Nemesis showed up around then too. Hmm... I think the NES games started up again around then too, because I remember Aaron was playing Top Gun and it was funny as all hell because he couldn't land a plane. We were all yelling things like "LEFT! LEFT! RIGHT! RIGHT!" and I yelled "B A B A SELECT START!" and such. It rocked.
Yeah, so at some point people were like "hey can we invite Bobby over? he's this really cool guy who's really into Bemani and lives near here," and I was like "but I have no idea who the heck he is, why didn't he get in touch with me?" well... a little while later Tanya was like "here, have my cellphone, talk to Bobby," and I was like "huh?" But I talked to him and said "sure, whatever, come over, bring whatever." He showed up with a bag with two Guitar Freaks controllers, a DrumMania controller, a KBM controller, games for all of the above, a whole bunch of other games... yeah, that was cool. I didn't really get to talk to him though because at the time he showed up was right after we shifted games so the living room was SNES and the dining room was PSX Puzzle Fighter. (Oh man did Puzzle fighter rock. I beat Kiefer at a game then lost to Charlie. LOTS of people were really into it. Eiji and Farren were kicking ass at Contra III in the living room.)
At some point after that, Gaffect and Aaron and I were sitting there like "dude, we should totally go hijack the SNES and put in Super Bomberman." So we did. :) I got out my 4-controller adapter thing, and Eiji helped us get it working, and then us three and Derick played battle mode. I won eventually. It was AWESOME, we had a blast. I then beat three newbies at it and played a second round and got beaten out because I wanted to talk to people. So I did. I sat around talking to Mike and Tanya and Bobby for a while, and then to Gaffect and Aaron, and... it was cool, I really enjoyed having a chance to talk to people I don't usually talk to. Gaffect is awesome, he really reminds me of a more outgoing version of Angel (Capt Faust from IMSO). Well, at least, he looks kind of like Angel, and has really similar tastes in videogames.
After a while, a whole bunch more oldskool people (some Casey guy, and Cory) showed up. And right after Steve and Aaron left, we set up GitaDora, which was funky, but the home DrumMania controller is REALLY weird. It got played for a while though. The dining room PSX was left unattended for a while though, so Farren and I sat down for a marathon Devil Dice battle mode game. THAT FUCKING RULED. I can't stress that enough. I haven't enjoyed playing a 2-player videogame as much in a really really long time. We're actually fairly evenly matched in that game, too... I think he's slightly better at me, but I won just as many rounds as he did until the last one I played (since Joe was hovering over the PSX wanting to play). We played like eleven matches and he was ahead 6-5 or something. Anyway, it was AWESOME. We also played a game of Contra together a little bit later... but I was royally screwing stuff up. We got up to like the 6th stage together and I died and didn't feel like stealing lives and then he died. (No, we didn't use the Konami code). I later played a game by myself where I didn't die until the end of the 4th stage but that's a REALLY harsh time to suddenly have just a normal gun again.) Still... that was awesome. I had a really, really, really good time doing that. It felt kind of like when I used to play videogames with like, my brother, or something.
After... I forget exactly what happened. Many people left. Bobby and Allan and Robby and I were sitting around talking about stuff... and talking... and talking some more... and some more... and the hours wore into the night... and we talked about everything from 80's TV shows and movies, to oldskool videogames, to commercials, to computers, to more videogames, to DDR experiences in Seattle and elsewhere, to gossipping about people, to more old videogames... to Japan... to everything. It felt like college again. I swear, it was so weird, Bobby is totally awesome. I mean, he likes Oha and Sledge Hammer and Ms Pacman and Arkenoid and DDR 4th Mix Plus and Korean songs and he's been to Japan a whole bunch of times (and is going back in two weeks and DAMN am I jealous) and he's almost the same age as me and... I dunno, it reminded me soooooooo much of like, staying up in the lounge five years ago talking to Kevin and Carl, finding out all these weird things in common. Sigh. So eventually the sun came up and I kicked everyone out, and went to sleep.
I got up at 2pm or so when Megan called. Then I goofed off around the house for a few hours, doing some cleaning, dumping the party pictures from my camera, etc. I went to set up KBM and try it out... except it turned out IT WASN'T THERE. I got REALLY freaked out. Then I figured Bobby had to take it home, but he wasn't on AIM, so I sent him some messages about it... and by that time it was almost dinner time. Went and picked up
thatmathchick since she has a vague disorienting cold, and when I got back everyone had arrived for dinner (everyone being Eli's friend Mike, and
mh75 and Josh, and
jeliza and
rubylou and
seanmcguire. We sat around talking, and I was still in a really bad mood because I was worried that I'd lost Farren's KBM game (I lent him 6th Style and he lent me KBM 2-3 and a controller, see). And then I was in a bad mood because we had no sour cream for the chili Eli made. So Megan and I went to 7-11, and I picked up some soda and sour cream and that was good. Then we came back and ate dinner, and sat around talking more (in the meantime I'd gone upstairs and had a message from Bobby saying "yeah, I have the KBM game. I can drop it off tonight or tomorrow, hopefully". So, whew). Then there was playing with our digital camera some more (Josh made it chirp when you turn it on, and woof when you take pictures, and stuff). Then there was orange tart for dessert, it was quite good. Eli is good at cooking. Then there was more talking, then taking people home, then catching up online. Megan and Josh had brought over Carcassonne at my request, but we didn't get to play due to time constraints and stuff. Oh well. Maybe I'll get to play some other time with them, as Josh still hasn't actually gotten to play the new one yet.
I'ma gonna play some IIDX before sleeping, I think. My sleep schedule is still pretty fux0red.
