Me: "I'm not interested in a trade, I just want to give away this shrimp [sushi]."
Kevin: "Look, just eat it already, nobody else wants it..."
Carl: "That's why she's trying to prawn it off on everyone."
I just ordered tickets. Eli and I will get to Seattle on Wednesday April 3 around noon, and be returning on the redeye Sunday night to Monday morning, April 7/8.

I'll have to make plans to visit the lot of you now... hopefully I have most people's appropriate email addresses (I know I have Jeliza and Megan since I've been talking to them, but I should get Ezzie and Joy, and any other people who you all know that I should visit (Barbara, should I bother trying to get in touch with your sister, for example? And I wonder whether Camille would want to hang out - my guess is no) and such.

Poets are the people who have taken the words from the tip of your tongue and the back of your mind and minted them into coins which they toss back into your mouth like a panhandler's change cup.

(I was debating posting a random Richard Brautigan poem or two while they were on my mind, but it seemed sort of silly and inappropriate given how much volume I already produce on here. At least the "machines of loving grace" one might be vaguely appropriate. Eh. We'll see.)

Anyway, today. Um. I went to campus for the afternoon. Got indian food and hung out in the lounge for a while. Played various stuff like bridge and Ricochet Robot and such. I found out that three different groups of CS grad students apparently wanted to invite me to the prospective dinners, which was highly flattering - or maybe I've just made a good impression on this year's first-year students :) Unfortunately I don't think I can go to any of them anyway since [profile] tesposit will be in town this Saturday and I plan to hang out with him and play D&D and stuff like that. I might join up with some people for swing dancing Saturday night though. We shall see. It's all a matter of how much I want to see the Harry Potter movie again, too (it's in McConomy on Saturday, at 7, 10, and 1...)

Amusing points in the afternoon were things like during a bridge game, I passed, Brian opened a spade, Nick bid 2 diamonds, Drew asked for a review, and Nick said "Pass, one heart, two diamonds," and Drew bid 3 diamonds as a support bid for hearts. I asked for a review then and Brian said "...I bid a spade, not a heart," and Drew went "shit, then I supported the suit incorrectly," and I raised my hand and yelled at the top of my lungs, "DIRECTOR!" except that Noble had already left the room. Damn. Oh, later in the afternoon I engaged Katie in ERS. She at least didn't cheat this time (after I basically said, "you can't touch the cards as you put them on the table,"). I won the first game but it was lame, and then the second game lasted like twenty minutes and she eventually won. (Yes, it is possible for ERS between two people to last that long if they're both good.)

After moderate confusion, I managed to get to Kiku for dinner, with [profile] rmitz and [profile] dvarin and [profile] buoren and [personal profile] eub and Kevin Watkins. (I *heart* Kevin. He's so awesome. I just wanted to say that. We were joking about him taking me driving sometime so I'd get to try out stick, and I was like "but you bought this car from Andrej. Therefore if I drove it I could like go write a short story called 'I Drove Andrej Bauer's Car' or something.") Kevin W and Roman and I got the AYCE sushi and tempura, which, dammit, was more than I could eat. I felt so wimpy. I finished almost 4 plates of sushi and 2 plates of tempura, but it was wimpier than S2 plates, so it's not quite as much an accomplishment. Eli and Carl and Kevin S shared the kaisen nabe, which is like shabushabu or sukiyaki, except it's like all seafood and a little bit of veggies and noodles/tofu. It was a scary amount of seafood, actually. Tons of crab legs and meaty fish chunks and scallops and shrimps and other stuff. I wouldn't have liked it, since I don't particularly like most of those sorts of fish, but it was really impressive to watch them cook and eat. The best part was that it took them as long to eat that as it did the rest of us to eat AYCE. Then again, Kiku is just slow compared to S2, really.

So slow, that I didn't actually get back quite in time for IMSO. I got back to find Rebecca and Bayani and Joanna in the lobby of my building. So I let them in. We set up DDR pads, and then played Samba de Amigo for a while. Becki showed up and brought her videotape of the Jan 26 DDR tournament. WOO! It was really cool, the first song she caught of me was the second song of my first set, Luv2Me, when the guy gave up halfway through and walked off the pad and was booed and all. That was cool, since I got to show it to Eli like "See! I wasn't kidding!" Most of the video wasn't too exciting because of the angle though - the people's feet, and not the screen or anything. Becki left it here until next week though, so if anyone can has the ability to copy or digitize a VHS tape for me, that would be REALLY greatly appreciated. [profile] alternakittyn showed up around 9:30, after Buffy or something, right when we were watching the DDR tape. After that we played a lot of DDR. Some 4th mix, and then some OHA! Yay OHA! OHA! OHA! OHA OHA! We also put on 2nd ReMix for a bit - yay for Step Battle, and then we put on Dancing Stage Dreams Come True (sigh - I've been on a general Dreams Come True kick lately anyway, so it was a happy thing too). I showed some DDR videos that were really cool, and then people left.

Then I ordered tickets to Seattle after a lot of wobbling and wussing. Whee.
This is for all you OS students out there.

"Morning Mother Wean"
(to the tune of Morning Morgantown by Joni Mitchell)

When morning comes to Mother Wean
The tired students can be seen
They've worked so hard they're turning green
In morning, Mother Wean

They're up real early, with the sun
To finish work while everyone is sleeping
And the day is young
In morning, Mother Wean

Morning inside of Wean
Stare at your computer screen
Morning and your kernel sucks
Morning's out of luck

We'll find a lobby table open
And drink some coffee while we're scopin'
Students who are really hopin'
To not be here in Wean

And the people who go off to classes
Bleary-eyed, and wearing glasses
They'll pull their homework from their asses in
Morning, Mother Wean

Morning inside of Wean
Stare at your computer screen
Morning and your kernel sucks
Morning's out of luck

I fit the ultra geek profile
I'm in the cluster with a smile
I watch my kernel not compile
In morning, Mother Wean

But the only thing I have to give
To make this work, to pass this with
Are all the mornings still to live
Inside the bowels of Wean

Morning inside of Wean
Stare at your computer screen
Morning and your kernel sucks
Morning's out of luck
Well, so now it's Kevin Watkins's car, but still. After dinner tonight, we went around the Morewood lot for a bit, and after it was obvious it was too crowded for me to feel comfortable in, we went to Edgewood. There's a nice big deserted section of the Edgewood Towne Centre lot, and so I practiced driving stick around the back of it. Clutch in, gearshift to 1, brake off, accelerate on, ease off clutch, ease off accelerator, drive, clutch in, break on, stop. Clutch in, brake off, accelerate on, ease off clutch, SPUTTER SPUTTER SPUTTER SPUTTER STALL. Repeat until there was more of the "drive" and less of the "SPUTTER SPUTTER SPUTTER" stuff. Kevin is a real sweetie and was very encouraging the whole time I was sitting there being frustrated about not knowing how to start the car without it being jerky or stalling. But I got it a little better eventually. I even got into second gear once or twice. Whee.

Aside from that, today was blah. I played some DDR and stuff in the afternoon, and we had dinner at Tasty's, and I hung out in the lounge before dinner.

damn. I was thinking I might go get some doubles of pictures made tomorrow, and one such set might be my Japan pictures. The thing is, I have 600 of them, and I was hoping to get my "100 best". But it's hard. I narrowed it to like 200 or so. Not very helpful. Dammit. It also made me really sad - I want to go back to Japan. I had such a great time there. Timing might work out for going there in July or August if I'm lucky...

Any of you who haven't experienced "Deanna shows off her Japan pictures and tells you tons of stories for two hours" can feel free to ask me for one. Whee.

So I guess I'll just get kitten picture doubles tomorrow, and maybe some more prints of some stuff from Ralph and Lori's wedding. Japan pics will have to wait...
