Jan. 29th, 2002 02:14 amToday after work I lugged my baritone to campus. Well, that is, I lugged it to work, and then Carl helped me drag it to campus for band practice. It was so nice to have my instrument back and not have to use the old crappy CMU spare one. (It's so old it has "carnegie tech" engraved on the horn). All the slides move and stuff! Whee! I could tune! Yay! Then I answered the BAQ saying how happy I was to have my baritone back and all. I also answered the BAQ as "Sally Bozzuto" with the answer "Your mom", and right under that as "Tal Latimer" with the answer "Ed Latimer's mom", so if you read the BAQ and wonder why it says that, blame me. I don't actually remember what the question was, though.
Oh yeah, on the way to band we ran into
alternakittyn and entourage. It was her birthday today and all... but they were going to dinner while I was going to band and stuff. So, oh well. We still have to have a para para party sometime.
After Kiltie I attempted to play pinball, but was mostly thwarted. I chatted with jcreed, mhock, Drew, and Tom 7 for a while in the O eating area while some guy beat the crap out of the Medieval Madness machine. Also, they got an Austin Powers pinball machine. This would normally be good because, hey, second pinball machine, but it's actually bad because, hey, SUCKY second pinball machine. Ugh. So I played some AP while the other guy was playing through his 3rd or 4th replay on MM. Tom Ault showed up like "hey deanna. mind if I play?" so I let him play AP for a while, while the MM guy was still playing. I decided to play Soul Calibur, figuring the guy would finish sometime around when I'd get smacked in SC. I've never actually played SC in the arcade before, so I decided to be Taki since she's my favorite character. Tom left around my 2nd stage in SC. The MM guy left around my 4th stage in SC. I was split between "give up my credit in this machine to play MM, or gamble on the machine still being free when I finish SC". Well, sure enough, around my 6th stage in SC, another guy came up to play MM. Fucker. I swear, I got K.O'ed in SC like 10 seconds after the guy came up and started playing MM. And he turned out to be decent, and... well, so I wasted $2.50 in the arcade area but never actually got to play MM. Sigh.
I ran into Dan in the O on my way out to whine about pinball. He said maybe stuff was up in Wean, so I went there. I got into a game of Tigris and Euphrates with Dan, Carl, and Rem (a friend visiting from out of town). What is funny is that I pretty much totally played chaotically. Well, there was some method in my madness, mostly because I didn't get a single blue tile after the third turn of the game. But, I won. It was sort of funny because before the game, Dan was saying I was the strongest player, and I was vehemently denying that, and he was like "then how come you've won the last ten games of this I've played with you?" I don't get it. I consider myself to be a fairly decent gamer and to pick up games pretty quickly and plan well and execute good strategies, but I don't think of myself being in the leagues of people like ajr and babailey (who are just insanely talented at winning board games), or of nshore (who mostly wins through being really aggressive), or of Dan (who actually knows a shitload about game theory and I think is even doing some of his PhD work on it). I consider myself to be about on the same par with Carl, which is to say, decent, but not the most-feared person or anything.
Anyway, enough ego-plonking. Dan left, and Carl read through my Oriental Adventures book, so I ended up playing this silly card game with Rem for an hour or two while we waited for people to go to Fuel and Fuddle for dinner. (I forget the name of the game. Lost Cities? Something like that). It was pretty quick and mindless. While I think it is a dumb game, I could see it growing on me.
Sadly, Mark Stehlik did not join us for dinner at F&F. And actually, thanks to Gopi and Tao, we didn't even get to eat until like midnight (So they were supposed to follow us there, and then didn't, and they showed up at like 11:30, by which point we had just 5 minutes previously given up on them, ordered, and made our table smaller so the F&F staff could use the rest of it as a 2-person table. Note we got there at like 10:45. Grr.) So it was really just me, Carl, Rem, and Mark the freshman. (Rem is a friend of mine who graduated and left CMU last year and is in town recruiting for some job fair thingy. He lives near a golfland in CA and plays DDR 5th and 6th mix all the time. Grr.)
I guess the food and stuff was ok. Sweet potato fries and all. The waitress was slow though and forgot to charge us for most of our drinks and stuff. I dunno. We were like "hi, we think you screwed up the bill, but we also left enough money to pay for the difference. you work it out."
Oakland kinda sucks at 1am. Carl and Mark and I walked up to Forbes and Craig though, and Carl walked me home, which was good, because I've gotten pretty non-fond of walking around Oakland alone late at night.
Hmm... I need some more LJ pictures to use in communities. I just joined a bunch of them today. I don't feel comfortable using my real pic there though, so I mostly just use Emi from DDR 4th mix. Shrug.
