Sunday in the shops with Dee

Today I slept in quite late. Woke up, had a ham sandwich with Eli, and then went clothes shopping. I hate clothes shopping. Nothing ever fits. And I hate clothes. If it were up to me I'd just wear t-shirts and jeans all the time. But, see, I have few pairs of jeans left that both fit and aren't tearing in embarrassing places. Hence... clothes shopping.

Went to Chubby & Tubby first just to see the place. It's cute and little and they have shoes but they had bored shoe salespeople and so I didn't bother looking around much. I want to buy DDR sneakers sometime but don't want to deal with shoe salespeople. I suck.

After that I went to K-mart. Found my jeans! The kind I've been buying for a few years and don't need to try on to know they fit! Yay! Tried on some "athletic" pants, you know, like my current DDR pants with stripes down the side, but that aren't falling apart. All the ones at K-mart sucked. I bought some other random stuff there, like more sports bras, and shampoo and toothpaste and such too.

Went to Target. Tried on more pants there. Found some cool ones! They need to be hemmed slightly but, I bought three pairs, so now that I play DDR at an arcade more than once every two weeks like I did in Pittsburgh, I'll have more than one pair of pants to wear per week. I also went looking for a bag to replace my black little backpack since the nyquil exploded in it at LG2. They didn't have that same bag, but I got a slightly larger one... it's supposed to be a camera bag but it looks like a nice size for a handbag/DDR bag, maybe it will fit a little bit more stuff. I also got another duck, a soapdish, and looked around for various other stuff.

Overall it was a successful shopping trip, really... it's nice when I can spend like 2 hours on shopping and get clothes and not hate myself or hate the clothing industry for being retarded.

Came home, ate chili, played a TON of IIDX... am slowly eliminating all of those non-yellow songs on 5th Style Light 7, passed a few new 4's and 5's. I think Shining Polaris is almost doable for me on Hi-Speed 2, which I also started experimenting with. Played a little Frequency... then came upstairs to goof off online and hem my pants so I can play DDR at Narrows tomorrow. I'm pretty psyched for that. I hope nothing gets fucked up this time.

Well, you have some point. Big chain stores all share some of the evil qualities. It is probably only minorly better to shop at Target than Walmart, or at Albertsons than Sam's Club.

However, Walmart (Sam's Club), in particular, operates on a business plan wherein they first kill off the local competition with artificially low prices. They can do this by subsidizing new stores with old stores. Then, when they have no other competition, they can increase their prices to support the entire company structure. This if fairly well documented.

It has worked like a charm in my hometown, Torrington, CT. Torrington used to have three department type stores (Kmart, Bradlees, and Caldors). Now it has Kmart (which is looking pretty sad) and Walmart. It also used to have two book stores. It now has none.

Or perhaps i'm just using that to excuse the fact that i bought something at Walmart over the weekend. (There were no other stores near Torrington which were carrying the new Trivial Pursuit game.)

But does Target not do the same thing?

I guess i don't know to what extent they do that, but i think that Walmart engages in these practices the most blatantly, and to the largest extent.

One difference: Target can charge less than home-town-dress-shop, because you get economies of scale. Walmart can do this as well.

However, Walmart also charges less than Target, because it undercharges on items until the Targets of the town are out of business. I don't think that the targets of the world do this particular action.

If you don't buy any of this, Walmart is also being sued for racism, sexism, and employee abuse, while i know of no such actions against Target.

Finally, Walmart chose to leave an empty store neglected in Torrington, while cutting down a whole hillside of trees to build their location. So i have a personal distaste. The other chain stores that have come and go in Torrington recently have used existing locations.
