Okay, I give up.

What the heck is NaNoWriMo anyway? I see everyone talking about it, and I can tell it has something to do with writing a lot of crap, but can't find a definitive explanation.

I'll probably be labeled overly negative for this, but a lot of crap seems to be the key phrase. When I said "Hey look, a 'write a novel in a month' thing", my officemate's exact words were "Ah, a project to increase the crap in the world."

I suppose if one good novel(ist) comes out of this, it was worth it, but I'd be surprised. :)

Well, look, the idea is not to write 50,000 words of crap, and then publish. Everyone, it seems, wants to write a book, but they never do, usually because they never get to the point of just sitting down and writing. NaNoWriMo is there simply to help these people get off their duffs and do what they've been promising themselves to do. Once they reach their word count, they can hack and slash and edit and add and delete and rewrite and restructure all they want, but at least they now have something down on paper that they can work with.

Though some people are entirely unapologetic about trading (particular ideals of) quality for quantity.

The point is not to discover the talents of hidden geniuses. The point is to encourage people to write. This post says it much better than I can.
