attack of the nyetwork

Today was a Para Para party in Tacoma, with free PPP, Para Para videos, demonstrations, dancing, etc...

...except that I didn't go, because it was from 5-8, and I figured there was no way in hell I would get there on time (it's like an hour away). Instead, I went to the Seattle Center after work and played 2 hours or so of 5th mix. I actually played relatively well. A few people came and went while I was there, mostly newbie-types who would play like one round and go "you're really good, we'll just watch you" or such. (Part of the charm of the Seattle Center arcade is that I am generally the best player there when I go, as opposed to... uhh... everywhere else in Seattle.) The fun of the evening was at one point when I "rouletted" and ended up playing CSFiL Speed Maniac. Here is what is interesting - I didn't finish playing it, I stepped down about 2/3 through. But, it's not like I didn't have the SKILL to finish it. I didn't have the Stamina. I even had a full bar for most of the time playing, but I couldn't breathe by the time I stopped. That's just SO FRUSTRATING.

Shortly after that another group of people showed up to play DDR. Two girls, two guys... The girls and one of the guys were goth-ish and didn't look much like DDR players, but one of the guys kept complimenting me on my songs, like he actually knew what was going on. Hmm. So I ended up doing Dive Basic as my fourth song and spun the heck out of it. The guy got up next... turns out he is a decent player, and a freestyler. Not a sensational one like some of the Cali people, but probably better than just about anyone I've seen in Seattle - he has a lot of the standard stuff down really well, drops and slides and all. (I think all of the people I see play at IZ are techs, really.) He certainly made my feeble styling look silly, at least. He did LTBHE and Butterfly, though... But, hmm, he can beat Captain Jack maniac, and that's better than I can do, so I have to respect that.

So meanwhile I had packed up my stuff to get going, but I decided to talk to him while his friends were playing (they weren't very good). Turns out he is from Tacoma but had come up to Seattle to hang out with people today. (I was like "dammit, but I wanted to go to Tacoma today!") He doesn't post to the DDR BBS, but we talked for a while about DDR and other stuff, and traded email addresses and AIM names before I left to grab food and catch a bus. (On the bus I sat next to a guy who actually asked if I wanted to sit next to him, and so I asked him what book he was reading, and he asked me too (I've started Serpent Mage, if anyone's keeping Death Gate Inhalation Score), and it was odd. Like all week I've been utterly unable to talk to strangers, and suddenly today it all comes out? I even chatted with the McDonald's guy.)

Actually the funny thing is that I used two of my useless Whizbang business cards to trade email/AIMs. :) Maybe I should make a goal of trying to get rid of a certain number of them to new potential friends.

I got home and the network decided to die. Infact I think it's dead again right now, so I might send this in the morning. I assembled part of my entertainment/gaming center. When I finally got network back, I had email from the DDR guy I met tonight! Wow, how cool is that. I figured I would be the one to eventually track him down. He seems pretty interesting, so whenever I decide to finally check out Narrows, I'll probably go try to hang out with him.

As a followup to yesterday's post - the J-Eurobeat CD really does kick ass, although it makes me spontaneously start waving my arms around para-style. The Kawamoto Makoto album is not particularly great, as expected. Man, I'm dumb sometimes in picking CDs...

I did CSFIL speed mix at SVGL on Thursday with [livejournal.com profile] tmartin (he played on trick, of course). The only place I couldn't keep a full bar was the billions of in-a-row steps. I think next time I'm going to try running in place on the arrow.

I didn't manage to finish it, either, though... We both died right at the end, and I felt very close to sick for a little while after that. I think I would have managed if it wasn't our first game after eating.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can change the skill level after roulette picks the song... at least you can on Max2, so if you wanted to play on an easier level, you could have.

You can change the difficulty level in roulette mode if you press the start button to end the timer, but you can't change it if you let the timer run out. Of course, if you stop the timer early, it isn't necessarily random--we had a tournament here in TX where the third song of each match was roulette where the guy running the tournament stopped the timer, and it kept landing on Abyss at least a third of the time. :)

I agree, CSFIL Speed Mix is pretty tiring, at least compared to stuff like Matsuri Japan (which I used to think was really tiring, but I don't anymore). And yeah, the repeated 8ths are annoying.
