WE BEAT THE YANKEES! W00T!
So I started today by going to the Mariners-Yankees game, which started at 12:05. This time Eli and I got there ten minutes before the game started, rather than twenty minutes after. That was good. Even better was like, the part where WE BEAT THE YANKEES! It was a pretty exciting game. Lots of good fielding and hitting and pitching on both sides. Roger Clemens was pitching for the Yankees, and my first thought was "Holy shit, he's still playing baseball?" and after seeing him pitch for 7 innings my thought was "Holy shit, he's still an amazing pitcher". Piniero got the win for the Mariners, and I'm still not quite sure why they took him out in the 7th inning or whenever that was. But, it was pretty exciting to see Sasaki come in and wrap up the 9th inning, neatly striking out two out of three batters. Ichiro was also fantastic to watch. He and someone else, I forget who (Cirillo?) were on 2nd and 3rd at one point, and a guy (Martinez?) hit a double. Well, by the time Cirillo got to home plate, Ichiro was already around third and halfway to home as well. He's just so FAST. There was a Japanese guy going around with this weird hat made out of the thingies that you blow into and they unroll. Except he had like eight of them, so it looked like tentacles coming out of his head when he blew into it. And he had an Ichiro shirt on and he was carrying around Japanese fans and waving them around, Orion.78 style. Heh.
Being a baseball fan in Seattle this year is way fun.
I also went to the Mariners Team Store, which is freaking huge, like bigger than the Pirates store. I bought a Sasaki t-shirt because it had his name on it in kanji and it was on sale. I also got a half-price Mariners 2002/2003 calendar with pictures of the baseball players with various cute dogs from some organization that helps train dogs to help blind/handicapped people. And, since I wanted a number shirt, I ended up getting an Olerud (no. 5) shirt. Why Olerud? Well, first, I have an Ichiro shirt already (was wearing it today). And I got a Sasaki shirt too. And Hasegawa, while cool, is not THAT cool. But Olerud is way cool for many reasons. He's actually left-handed, both fielding and batting, unlike most of the Mariners who hit lefty or switch but all field righty. He's also a really good first baseman (and one of my favorite Phillies was Tim Corcoran, who was a lefty first baseman as well). He's a good batter. He's a college graduate. And his birthday is the same as Eli's. So. I'm not really sure why people get particular baseball player number shirts, but the number shirts are actually like the nicest Mariners shirts, I think, so I wanted one, and now I have one! Whee. On the way back from the store I noticed a sushi bar in the park. They make "Ichiroll"s, which appear to just be spicy tuna rolls. I also noticed that the stadium has a LOT of directions and other signs in Japanese. It's so cool.
Josh just said "Our sink is a mess" and I was like "huh? rsync is a mess? I am so confused."

jeliza met up with us. We spent forever picking stuff out. I gave up on getting a real computer table and I'm just going to make one out of IVAR stuff. I have WAY too much Ivar stuff. At least it's all modular, so in theory if I hate it, I can just make bookcases out of it all. After carefully planning out my computer megadesk, I realized that oops, the wall in question is barely 5 feet, not 5 feet plus, and my setup was about 5.5 feet and that would suck. So I redid the whole thing. Hopefully when I build it sometime soon it'll turn out not to suck too much. Whee Ikea. Jeliza was wonderfully helpful in helping us get all of our stuff home, with her station wagon. Of course, we have to go back sometime to get one more Ivar vertical. Whee.
We went to dinner with Sean and Ruby at Chang's Mongolian Grill in capitol hill, which was great and I ate a lot of yummy food and ice cream and then we all went to the new house and unloaded Ikea stuff. And now we are back here at Josh and Megan's.

The guy with the funny hat was there on Friday as well. I liked him. Teams need fans like that.
I'm willing to bet that they took Piniero out because he had 100 pitches. Years ago (3/4?) Lou Pinella used to leave pitches in until they lost the game for him. (Eg. They'd pitch great for 7 innings, start to fall apart in the 8th, and then he'd leave them in until they'd let in too many runs to make up. Really frustrating.) This is bad for a two reasons. 1) you lose the game. 2) it can really permanently damage a young pitchers arm to throw too long all the time. So, the pitching coach (Brian Price) and Lou came up with a deal where he pulls guys after 100 pitches. This number is less firm with old guys (like Moyer), but really important with young guys. Since that time the Mariners have developed one of the best pitching staffs in the majors, so i approve.
I'm not a big fan on Chang's. I think this is for two reasons: 1) I went there first on a 'eat for the cure' night (or something like that - you go out to eat and restaraunts give their procedes to AIDS research). Since Chang's is on capitol hill, there were like a billion people there, which compromised the quality of the food. and 2) the only other mongolian grill i've been to was 'Fire and Ice' near Cambridge (MA), which totally kicked ass.

i was so excited in the beginning of the season, but... guess i'll have to wait some more.
