canoeing, DDR, etc
We woke up, and found the post office, and did post-officey things. Then we got lunch at Thai Ocean, a place near Greenlake that we had gotten Thai food for lunch with Jeliza back in April and I remembered they had good lunch specials. They did. I still don't think I adore Thai food or anything, but as long as I'm in Seattle and Eli loves it, I might as well get inured to it. Yeah. Anyway, after that we came back for a bit and watched the Reds and the Dodgers on TV playing a game from like the 11th inning to the 13th inning, when Griffey hit a home run to win the game 6-4. It was kinda exciting, especially since I just saw the Reds so I remember who they are.
We decided go to canoeing on the lake. Well, I had sort of decided it yesterday, that it would be interesting at least... I wanted to try kayaking actually but Eli actually knows about canoeing, so we did that. Probably a good thing. I suck at it. I don't have enough arm strength and I don't have good paddling form, so I get tired easily. Also I was really frightened of falling in. But, we did get to chase ducks and go to the duck island in the middle of the lake that you can only get to if you boat there somehow. So that was nice. It was a really nice day out for it, anyway. And it's $10/hour for a canoe and we were out there an hour and a half but the guy only charged us for one hour. That was nice. We saw the baby ducklings again, although today there are only 6 of them instead of 8.
In the evening I decided to go out to the east half of Seattle. So I went to Issaquah to play DDR at Illusionz. Their machines now are two 7th mixes with everything unlocked, a USA, a Disney, and a Solo 4th Plus. Things were pretty cool for a while; I got to play Burning Heat and some other songs I was looking forward to. I got there around 7:20, and around 8, these super-good "Team Seattle" people showed up and started doing all of this wacky super-good tech DDR stuff. They even have, like, ID cards with their names and pictures and stuff that say team seattle on them. I played alongside one of them, and he was super-good too. They all only play 9-10 foot songs and get like 95% perfects on all of them, even doing things like lasting 1:35 into maxx unlimited official. Scary stuff, but... they also have this WEIRD way of doing coin lines. People don't line up for sides of the machine... they just get in one line. So if you want to play sooner, you pretty much go "huh, can i play along with you?" and they give you a weird look and go "do you care if i pick all the songs?" and you go "no. go ahead" and they look at you funny again. I asked about the lines and said something like "Hi, I just moved here from Pittsburgh. Your lines are weird. How do they work?" and they explained it and also said "We, like, used to have this all written down on the machine so nobody would ask, but it's gone now." Bleh. Anyway, despite my feeling of "i really really suck and these people are really good and look at me funny for not being a cata player", I did pay my $7 and sign up for the Standard Tech tournament on Sunday, Aug 25 at noon. That's the only one I signed up for though... I think I might have a chance at doing okay in it, but it is single elimination, so who knows. Also, I really don't know the MAX2 songs at all. I need to just go play through all the MAX2 songs on standard sometime so I won't have to worry about sight-reading at the tournament. Eh, I have three weeks; I should be able to do it sometime between now and then. Whee. I got to play some PPP and DrumMania, too. That was, at least, pretty good.
So after DDR I was totally hungry, and I went to McDonald's. It turns out Martin was trying to call me about 90 times while I was DDRing, but I couldn't hear the phone, and since he was calling from MS, the phone number was blocked so I couldn't call him back, and... well, finally I heard from him at dinner. After I ate, I headed over to Redmond and picked him up from work. However, we really had no plans. So we ended up going to the Uwajimaya out there (japanese grocery). We wandered around the whole thing chatting, which was fun, and I bought some Pocky and some gogonogocha (my favorite japanese iced tea). Then I drove him home because we couldn't come up with anything to do. Hopefully I'll see him again before he leaves town.
Driving home wasn't so bad, though they are doing work on 520 so the bridge was really slow. I did have a funny driving mistake while coming out of the McDonald's though. I had changed my pants in the car in the parking lot (was too lazy to get back up and bring them into the restaurant, also the car was parked in a pretty dark place so I figured nobody would see), and had moved back the seat to have more room, and when driving down the road I realized the seat was too far back, so I tried to move it up, which resulted in the seat going flying forward and me slamming on the brake and nearly pounding my chest into the steering wheel. Fortunately, I didn't. Also fortunately, no other cars were on the road. I stopped for a second, adjusted the seat, and drove. Everything was ok after that, but it was sort of frightening.

Did you meet him? He's about as good as the best players in Texas.

Anyway, Dee, the Team Seattle people seem to be somewhat unique in that they are both very good at DDR and they are nice people, even when online.
People don't line up for sides of the machine here either, we just have one line. What makes it stupid is that the line isn't even in order, so you have to remember "there were 3 quarters on the machine when I put mine up", and count the quarters taken down as people play. Coin lines are silly.

You'll find that pretty much all the machines here, you just make one line, and if someone goes alone, you can always ask to go with them (most people really don't mind).
Ah, Team Seattle.... :p
Anyway, don't worry about not being a huge cata player... There are lots and lots of people that play regularly that aren't, or that don't care if you don't. ;) We should meet up at Illusionz sometime!
Unfortunately I'm going on vacation just before the tourney, so I have to miss out. :(
