Knoebels trip
That last entry, well, when I was leaving and saying good-bye to people at Knoebels, Tim was like "Deanna's going to write like seven pages about this weekend," and I said "nah, I'll just write 'went to Knoebels, rode the Flyer, it was cool, came home'..." and people were like "Oh, don't forget DDR..."
Anyway... uhh... this entry will probably be long, although maybe interesting if you are thinking of going to Knoebels, and there's some DDR in it too. I'll LJ-cut semi-appropriately. I probably have events out of order but I'm braindumping.
Friday evening
We decided to go up 28 to 80 to cut across the state. I drove to Fuddrucker's first for dinner, and then for the first half of the trip or so. Except for that annoying non-passing-zone part of 28 it was pretty good. I guess I drove all the way to the second rest stop on 80, where we ran into Mike and Tal and Carl, who had apparently passed us twice on the way. Whee. Then we drove some more, getting to Knoebels around 11:30pm, finding our campsite purely by accident. People helped us set up a tent and we inflated the air mattress and talked for a little while and went to sleep.
Saturday morning
Tents get REALLY FREAKING HOT if you're in the sun, so I was woken up by the heat at 7:30 or 8am. Camp showers are yucky, but not too horrible, and after getting up we had bagels and I met some of the other people who were in our group... except I still don't think I understand who they all were.
I think there was Tim and his parents and his girlfriend and his sister (who is a Jen) and his sister's boyfriend. Then there were a Jen and an Andy that were friends of Tim's from Tennent. Then there was another Jen who I got the impression was a neighbor person, and Jen's parents. Then there was an Amanda and her boyfriend. Then there were Tim's grandparents I think. I'm not sure. Then our group, which was me and Eli and Mike and Carl and Tal. So we had three Jens and a whole lot of people who pronounce water like "wooder".
Saturday in the Park with George (or non-Georges as the case may be)
After meeting lots of people we walked over to the park and alternately bought ride tickets or ride-all-day bracelets. The Philly crew opted mostly for bracelets but the rest of us plus Tim and Laurie opted for ride tickets. Bracelets took a long time to buy but tickets were quick, so I asked, of course, where the DDR machine was, and while waiting for bracelets, I played some DDR with Carl. It was a 3rd mix Asian machine, which is the lamest of the 3rd mixes, but is better than Cedar Point's 1st mix machine, at least.
One thing that is way cool about Knoebels is that there is free admission to the park, and free parking, and free entertainment, and all this other stuff... so you have to pay to ride rides, and to get food, and to stay on the campgrounds, but really, it is really cheap compared to a lot of other places. Food was a lot cheaper than many amusement parks that I've been to, and rides were definitely relatively cheap - I spent about 13 bucks on rides, and maybe 5 bucks on DDR. It is really cool... despite this, the park isn't all that crowded, I guess because it's sort of out of the way in the middle of nowhere. But it is cool anyway.
So, we went on rides and did fun stuff like DDR and mini golf.
We went on some roller coasters first. The first one was called the Twister. It is a big wooden roller coaster that is apparently their newest. It was also the one I think I liked the best. It goes pretty high and has a nice drop, and it twists around a whole lot, but the best thing about it is just that it is very, very, very smooth for a wooden coaster. I was really impressed by that. Right after that practically we went on the Phoenix, which is a coaster that makes Knoebels famous... apparently it used to be called the Rocket, and was built in 1947 and was bought and reconstructed at Knoebels, and is one of the top coasters in the world. I'm not sure I really understand why though. Our first time riding it, I was in the last car with Eli, and we spent more time OFF our seats than on it. Now, I know some people really love coasters that make you feel like "I can fly!" but this one pretty much just kept making me feel like "My spine is going to crack if it gets bumped up and down once more!"
Anyway, we did a few more things before lunch; we went on the Haunted House ride, which was cute, and they had these strings that came down from the ceiling that are supposed to feel like a bunch of bugs are on you and make you go "get 'em off me!" except what happened to Tal is that one of the strings caught his glasses and got 'em off him and then we had to go get the attendant, who found the glasses eventually but they were pretty much destroyed. Oops.
I think we went on the bumper cars at that point and then went for lunch. They were good bumper cars. They were also good lunch. I had pierogies and tater triangles and birch beer and stuff. Mmm, birch beer. I love eastern PA sometimes.
After lunch we went on more stuff. We went on the Flume, which was pretty neat, and on this ride called the Flyer, which involves a tractor motor that spins this thing around, and you have these little planes, and they have a front sail thingy - so you can steer yourself. Ideally you just make your plane go up and down, but I was going for chaos and was trying to get our plane to hit the trees, to the point that the rope sounded like it was going to snap. Apparently Andy thinks this is the point of the ride, and was proud of me, but everyone else was just flying a lot.
ddr story 1 starts here - At one point, while everyone else was going on this railroad thingy, I went and played DDR in the arcade... there was a crowd gathered, and I asked if I could get in line. I watched two girls play basic songs and go "look at us, we are so cool, we can get A's on End of the Century", and then the guys before me played an SSR set of The Race, Wonderland, and Do It All Night. They were these two punk-looking guys with piercings and baggy pants and chains and all. While they were picking songs and picked Do It All Night for their third, I was like "oh great, this one too?" and one of them was like "Oh, this song is really hard, I can pass catas but this one gives me trouble" and I'm like "no way dude, this is one of the easiest ones ever" and he said "Well, of course it is easy on Dance Dance, but on SSR it is tough" and I was like "I know. I play SSR." He gave me a look that clearly said "yeah right," but shut up and turned back to the machine and they played out their set - barely passing, he screwed up the alignment at the end.
So then I got on the machine and was like "hey, do either of you want to play an SSR set with me?" since Carl had said he wouldn't play SSR with me and stupid 3rd mix doesn't let you play third mix songs in all three levels. So the better of the two guys said sure, and put in his 75 cents, and we put on SSR, and I did the Vivid code and he did too, and then I scrolled around looking for a good song to start up on... the thing is I didn't want to kill myself, because I was worried about getting sick at the park. So I started with (and
sorjai will kill me if he's bothering to read this) Silent Hill. If I was doing it PA, I beat the other guy by quite a lot. Then I was like "I know you played it already, but can we do Wonderland?" So we did. We both full-comboed it - but I did spins and other stuff, plus I beat him by like 50 perfects. But I did say "dude, nice combo!" afterwards and he was like "yeah, you too!" which was cool. Then for the third song I couldn't decide on anything and was just scrolling around when I stopped scrolling on In the Navy and was like "can you do this one?" and he was like "are you insane? No way," and I was like "no, this one is easy, just get the gallops" and while I was talking, the chooser ran out of time so we got to play In the Navy. Whee! I got all of the gallops dead on, although I did almost fail the song during the part with the quick jump-jump-jump thingies (later I noticed that I only had 3 goods, 1 boo and 2 misses, so I wonder how hard that machine is set!) but I recovered and ended the song with a full status bar. Everyone was like "dang!" which was really cool... except for me... I was like "water!" and I ran out of the arcade towards a water fountain, where I stood for a while, making sure I wasn't going to start coughing up a lung or anything.
So after that I was feeling pretty good, because I mean, those guys playing were pretty decent (I mean, they'd at least hold their own in a Maniac tournament here, although Mike would kill them on sheer Perfects) and I did better than them. I guess it's like, I mean, I suck at DDR compared to all of my friends that play seriously, they all got much better much quicker than I did, but it is nice every now and then to go somewhere and feel like I am really good at it.
We watched a band play for a bit... they were inside the railroad thingy. They had two trumpets, a marching tuba (not a sousaphone), a trombone, a drummer, and a saxophone. They were pretty good! And I love band music, so I applauded a whole lot for them... they looked surprised when they heard us clapping. Heh.
We went on a bunch of other rides after that. Notably was the carousel, which is really neat - they have this thing where people on the outside horses are supposed to reach out and try to grab metal rings from a thingy a park attendant is holding. Whoever grabs a brass ring gets a free carousel ride (ie, 70 cents in tickets). So everyone was trying to do that, although I didn't know it at the time so I sat on the inside the first time. We also went on the ferris wheel, which showed us exactly how pretty the area around Knoebels is - lots of mountains full of trees and stuff.
ddr story 2 - Actually, I forget when this happened but at one point I went and did a set of songs with Carl... Strictly Business maniac, Dub-I-Dub, and Boom Boom Dollar Maniac. I didn't know it but the rest of our camping group was actually watching me play... all I could see when I spun around was a crowd, but couldn't identify people. So I got really embarrassed.
Around 4pm we split up from the group... first we went and got ice cream (turkey hill ice cream!!!) and I got this huuuuge sundae, and the others got cones. I couldn't finish my sundae so I let Tal help me finish it. After that we played mini golf, which I really haven't played in ages (the last time I played was at IBM Austin when we visited people in Austin in October). I did okay though. After the first 9 holes Eli was in the lead and I was second, two strokes behind him, but after all 18 Eli had a huge lead over the rest of us (he scored 47; Carl was next with 50, me with 54, Tal with 56, and Mike with 60). None of us really did badly... I still am not sure how Mike was last since he tended to do consistently well. It was fun, anyway.. I like mini golf but there are no good places for it around Pittsburgh, at least not like the ones I remember from being a kid like Somerton Springs and ones on the Jersey Shore.
After golf we got dinner. I was feeling a little sick so all I had was cheese fries and birch beer. I talked to Jen and Andy because they were at my side of the table. After dinner we went around not doing very much at all, really. I think we went on the bumper cars again, since they are very very good bumper cars. They had a roadway for them, so you had to go around a track, and the cars bumped nicely and responded really well... I got REALLY good at dodging people and hitting people to make them spin around. Yay.
I also went shopping and bought a t-shirt and some tapes and CDs of Wurlitzer music. YAY WURLITZERS! I love Wurlitzers, as many of you may know from accompanying me to amusement parks in the past. I am even listening to the CD right now. It is wonderful. Apparently the only other person in history to buy a tape of Wurlitzer music is
tesposit's dad, but that is neither here nor there.
ddr story 3 - After that I went back and I played some more DDR... first I played a normal third mix set with Carl... I don't even remember what songs except that Luv To Me trick was the third. Then this other Knoebels employee guy wanted to play, so I said "hey, I'll play an SSR set with you" and we did. He wanted to do all catas, but I convinced him to do Do It All Night SSR as the first one, and then he picked Butterfly Upswing for the second one (hey, I passed, I even got a C, which some of you will know is a big deal for me because usually I don't have the stamina to finish that one). The third song he picked was Dead End SSR, which is, of course, a cata. I said, "I will not be able to finish this song in the condition I'm in right now" and he said "That's ok, I can't finish it either." We played it anyway, failing in the middle. I actually got further than I usually do... that was pretty cool.
So after sitting at the water fountain for another five minutes, I got back up and nobody was on the DDR machine so I got Eli to take pictures of me playing a few songs... I freestyled Butterfly, Brilliant2U, and Strictly Business maniac. It was fun. Yay DDR! I am so glad they had a machine there.
After that, Mike decided we should do something to use up his extra tickets (Mike doesn't ride very much, or so he says, although I think he went on almost everything I did, except one coaster and the Flyer and maybe one other thing). So Carl and Mike and I went on the carousel and Carl and I tried to get rings. I was largely unsuccessful - I only got two, and broke a nail trying to get others. Carl only got one, but HE GOT THE BRASS WINNER RING! Whee! So then he received 70 cents in tickets, so he went and bought 50 more cents in tickets and he and Mike rode it again while I tried to take a picture of Mike getting rings. He's good at it and got like 8 of them. Geez.
We headed back to camp shortly after that.
Saturday night
We had a campfire and sat around telling silly stories about people. Campfires are neat and it was cool to toast marshmallows and eat snacks and sit around a fire, although I felt a little bad because I have trouble with large groups of people I don't know well. Tim told a lot of boy scout stories involving him playing pranks on Andy. After a while the rest of us Pittsburgh-types tried to get into the storytelling swing of things, but I don't think our stories went over well except with each other. There were some people up the hill loudly and probably drunkenly playing some card game which sounded like bridge.
Eventually we went to sleep around midnight.
Sunday
Got up. Showered. Changed. Ate bagels. Packed up our stuff; took down the tents; shoved stuff in the car; said goodbye to people; got on the road. I drove halfway - this time I noticed Mike passing me somewhere along 80, and I did try to keep up for a bit but Eli's car is unhappy when you go faster than 72 or so.
We stopped in DuBois for lunch around 1:30pm at HOSS'S!! I love Hoss's... it is so cool... the people are always so nice and friendly and the salad bar rocks and mmm Hoss's. I was really happy to get to stop there, and we had good food and I told lots of stories about Kiltie expeditions that all ended in Hoss's. After that Eli and I swapped driving and I fell asleep for most of the rest of the ride home (at least I didn't fall asleep at the wheel).
Now I am home, and have been catching up on computer stuff. Wish I could catch Roman online to try to start restoring my computer and backing it up and all...
Anyway... uhh... this entry will probably be long, although maybe interesting if you are thinking of going to Knoebels, and there's some DDR in it too. I'll LJ-cut semi-appropriately. I probably have events out of order but I'm braindumping.

There's a place just over the hill from our house called "Harvy's Funland", but it doesn't look very impressive at all.
