A rainy, but pretty good day
Today was a good day. It started with being vaguely responsible; taking care of filing unemployment, depositing some checks, returning videotapes, etc. Then I went to campus to have lunch in the lounge, where I got to play Settlers with Jen and Noble, and see lots of cool people (they all know who they are). I mostly hung out chatting with people, playing some Boggle, etc. It was cool, I didn't realize it was possible to get loungeness during the summer and all. I hadn't played board games in like three weeks... think I was going through withdrawal or something.
After hanging out for a while I brought my old hard drive to
rmitz's office, where I also saw
techstep. Roman put my hard drive onto a Linux machine and of course, because it is not stupid, it saw all my files... he said we'd be able to copy most of them to one of his drives, and I left because it was going to take hours and hours. I hope it went okay. Roman is cool, and he is much smarter than Windows 2000.
I came home and hung out for a while... my stomach hurt so I napped and stuff. Eli was going Geagle shopping with Mike for stuff for this weekend, and I went to play bridge.
Bridge was pretty fun. We had four pairs there this time... Jen and Noble, Drew and Jflinn, Jensen and Roman, and me and Nick. We all played East-west - we were 4 out of 7 EW pairs. Hmm. So what happened? I think Nick and I actually played extremely well, all things considered... we did very well on most boards, at least in terms of playing and bidding decently. There were a few exceptional ones... there was one where I doubled a 4C contract, then made an extremely weird defensive play of underruffing, but I thought I'd counted everything right, and I had - so it went one down - but all of my mental work was for nothing, as we only got an average-minus on the board anyway. Grrr. We also bid one slam our way, but it was one down - sadly, my play for 5 would have been a shared top if I'd stayed in 5 hearts. I won't mention the -1100 hand in detail because it's unclear whose fault it is (I blame myself for that Michaels bid although I don't think it was *too* horrible). Basically, the final result is kind of unfair - we got a lot of bottoms not because we did poorly but because of a bunch of boards where North-South would have a slam and ONLY our opponents would actually bother to bid it. The nerve!
So in reality I think it was a very good session even if we placed next to last, mostly because we played some very good bridge - both of us played quite nicely on a lot of hands - and I feel good about that even despite the end result. We wuz robbed. :(
Afterwards Roman, Mark, Nick, me, Noble, and Jen went to Fuel and Fuddle, where I ate way too much food and drank some alcohol but not much. One of these days I'll get to actually see Nick drunk, but it'll be sometime when the logistics of figuring out who's driving whose car where isn't a problem.
Now I am home. Oh, everyone wish
dvarin a happy birthday... it's his birthday... yay Carl! I don't usually do birthday greetings on LJ but I'll make an exception for my best-friend-type person. Especially because Carl is always extremely extremely helpful to me on my birthdays and is wonderful and deserves a lot of good birthday karma.
