I am free as a bird, even though you tell me that I can't fly

Wow, I just tried to catch up to all of the LJ friends stuff going back to Sunday night and it literally took me 45 minutes. Ouch.

Anyway, DSL is good stuff. Without it, yesterday, I didn't do much of anything. I came back to town, goofed off playing DDR MAX, and got Eli to let me drive him out to Allison Park to practice parallel parking. There was a line of cars there... so I'd have to wait 10ish minutes between my tries... on the first one I hit a barrel and the curb but aftre that I did pretty well. I cheated though - used the left-hand mirror to see if i was in the box, rather than caring about the curb. Carl came over in the evening and we played more DDR MAX and hung out. i got to show Carl the wonderfulness that is DDR OHA! and also showed him the ton of stuff Eli's grandparents sent me from their Japan trip. Oddly I think we went to several of the same places they did... they had the same Himeji postcard set and the map of Nijojou and all.

Today I found out we had DSL. Woohoo! The first thing that happened upon finding out was that I made plans with everyone to hang out tonight. Then Kevin and Carl came over and played more DDR, and I had a phone interview at 4pm (I will not say with who as to not jinx it, but it is a company based in Seattle, for a tech writing position that has a line in the job description that reads "Proficiency in Perl, C++ and Java is required because you must quickly understand the complexity of our systems, create sample applications that demonstrate individual components of the system, and share this information with others." It also goes on to say that a degree in Computer Science and Technical Writing is ideal. Well, gee. If that's not me, I dunno what is). It went well and I have a second phone interview scheduled for today (Wednesday) at 3pm. Whee!

I went over to the Beeler house at 6:30ish. It's cool, it is the exact mirror of the house that I lived in during the summer of 1997. I played some bridge, and then we called up Prince of India and Nick let me drive his car there and he and Carl and I picked up lots of indian food (for 7 people) and then we ate food back at the Beeler house and then we played a metric ton of bridge. We did a teams-style game, 8 boards, with one team being me, Nick, Drew, and Kevin, and the other being Jason, Jen, Charlie, and Noble. Our team kicked ass and won, although it was unclear at the time. Nick penalty-passed a bunch of bids that scared the crap out of me, but they all worked out really well in the end. Oh, and I got to harrass Krispy and his Japanese homework, too. We set up DDR MAX on the third floor and people cleared enough songs for me to have MAX 300! Woo! So I came up to see how things were going and then said "ooh! must play MAX 300!" and I played it on Standard AND I PASSED! In the arcade I only beat it on Light... I feel so 1337. I also got an A on Cowgirl in heavy mode and was impressed that the house didn't shake at all. Oh yah, I also unlocked True Trance earlier today with Kevin and Carl. So how do I unlock Candy? And what else is there to unlock?

As it is, my 1337 playing got Christine (a summer Beeler housemate) to play, and she is pretty good too, and we put in 4th mix and played Kick the Can maniac, and I only missed a full combo by 1 and she missed by 2. Heh. I wouldn't be surprised if she is as good or better at DDR than I am, but I always try to do my best if possible. I guess the thing is, I've hit a major plateau of my playinmg level, and everyone else seems to always surpass me, so despite the fact that I've been playing for like two years now, most people can own me after only playing for a month if they put effort into it. Sigh.

At any rate, DDR MAX is a lot of fun to have, and I totally see what Brad means about the cool freeze arrows in Centre of the Heart, too.

After DDR I played more bridge until 2am or so. Nick is an excellent partner, not only because he's a great bridge player but because he laughs at my dumb jokes *and* we compete with each other on deciding whose fault everything is ("no! that was MY bad... I should have led the ace." "no... it was my fault, I should have played the king."). I mean, I like playing bridge with everyone in the group, but I click best with Nick. Also, everyone else keeps doing silly things like psyching, trash-talking, and playing Precision. :)

As it is, I'd like to welcome all of my Austin friends to LJ, and I hope they don't find my old entries where I complained about being bored while they were all playing Age of Empires or anything. :)

question for the ddr fanatic

How do you keep soft pads from getting all squished and twisted up when doing fast or complicated songs?

I've been trying to do harder songs, but ones with fast steps (eighth notes and whatnot) always winds up with the pad all twisted under my feet, so that nothing registers and I fail the stage. I play in socks, with the pad on carpet, and the pad has four grabby circles on the underside. Any ideas, or do soft pads just suck?

Get a big piece of plywood and attach the pad to it.

Hm. We have some carpet foam pieces that I cut for the original pad (since it was on a cement floor) so maybe I'll tape them down to those and see if it helps. Otherwise I suppose I'll go for the plywood idea. :)
