Weekend - games and fanfest

Saturday, Adam had a little board games thing at his house. As in, everyone else he pinged ended up being busy or sick, so it was just me and Mike in the end. We actually drove to Adam's, parked the car, and then walked to Hattie's Hat for lunch because I had been raving about it for ages and it had never been open when we could both go. Mike likes brunch food and that's what they had going on; I had "eggs and chicken fried chicken" and gave him the eggs. Yeah. And hot chocolate! Which was appropriate as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (original 1971 mix) was on the TVs while we were there.

We played games at Adam's, starting with a round of Quirkle with us two and Adam and Rehana (Adam won but just barely, like 105 to my 103, I got really lucky in the last few moves), and then me and Mike and Adam played Das Scepter von Zavandor, which I hadn't played since Carnival 2007. It was fun, and Adam won, 77 or so to my 71 -- I was just slightly behind on money to convert my last few sapphires to emeralds. (Mike got trampled but it was his first time playing and he didn't realize how much various things were worth.)

We checked in with Carl, who would be over "in like 90 minutes if that", then went down to this taco truck parked by Safeway for dinnerish stuff. It was a pretty amazing truck, they had really great food and a tent next door with tables to sit at, a foosball table, and heaters so the cold wasn't so bad. It was really neat. Wish I'd brought my camera. Mike got comics on the way back (his usual comic store is on 15th), and then we played some Race for the Galaxy while waiting for Carl.

With Carl, we played Agricola. It sucked for me because I couldn't remember the game very well and my legs were really hurting for some reason, so it was hard to concentrate. After that we played some Tichu until everyone was tired. Yay.

Sunday, I went to Mariners fanfest with Mike and with Jason Weill, who had been foolhardy enough to accompany me to the 2007 Mariners Fanfest (but apparently had a good enough time to want to go with me again). The only thing is, Fanfest doesn't really change all that much from year to year, so most of the stuff there, we'd already done before. But it was Mike's first time so we kind of did some of it again for his sake.

We got there too late to get an autograph ticket for Dan Wilson's session. In retrospect maybe we shoulda grabbed tickets to Jason Vargas's -- first because I've actually seen him play but second because hey, Vargas the Mad is a character in Puzzle Pirates! But no, I kid. We had some bagels for lunch from Blazin' Bagels (the "Best Bagels East of New York" -- WTF?) and then went to the Dugout Dialogue, where we listened to Rick Rizzs with Dan Wilson, and then Rick with Jay Buhner and Bret Boone, so, in other words, old Mariners. We skipped out BEFORE the Felix Hernandez session :) We got photos with the Moose, which turned out crappy, and then went to play catch in the outfield! That was fun except they only let you play for 3 minutes. Mike and I brought our gloves and Jason borrowed one.

Then we ran the bases (or walked) and took photos in the dugout. After that I ended up talking in Japanese to some people filming a show for NHK. That was surreal. At least I was wearing my 野球道 t-shirt.

We wandered inside after that and saw the clubhouse and locker room and the Dave Niehaus tribute and the history exhibit, and then got in an elevator and found out they'd let us go into the press box, so we went there, and... that was about it, everything started closing down a little before 4pm.

Getting ready to play catch.

Here we are on first base.

"And if you go to your left into the locker room, you can take a photo with Felix Hernandez's Cy Young Award-winning socks." I shit you not, the dude in the clubhouse actually said that to me.

I guess that's about it for the day. Mike and I stopped by Ikea to get some pins for a DVD bookcase he got there last week, and I got a desk chair, but still haven't built my desk. I went to sleep super-early.

Monday was super-busy but I think I will write a separate non-public post for it. The most notable thing is that I went to Lamponi, the thai place near the Safeway plaza, and it was this amazingly surreal experience where the "soup of the day" seriously reminded me of puke. I don't know a better way to describe it. I found it absolutely disgusting. BUT then my actual lunch, pad see iew noodles, was absolutely fantastic. So, go figure. They also give you a huge thai iced tea if you order one, so that was a plus too. I dunno.
