Urgh.

Benoit and I are embarking on my great Kyushu Conquest tomorrow.

But, I fucked up -- I didn't realize that while Seishun 18 tickets work until Jan 10, you can only buy them until Dec 31. I only remembered the important "you have to buy at least one day before you use them". They had a longer use and buy period last year.

Found that out tonight when trying to get Benoit one for our trip.

Whoops.

We went to Shinjuku to try to find ticket resellers who might have one or two to sell... only to find that all the ticket resellers are on vacation for New Year's. WTF.

BUT.. it looks like Benoit might qualify to buy a Kyushu Rail Pass anyway. So we're going to try to do that in Kokura. If that's the case, then this works out -- I'll do the trip on my 4 days left on my Seishun 18, and he'll pay tickets for the day that we're doing Yonago->Matsue->Kokura.

Then once we meet up with Christina, I'll probly just eat the cost of a shinkansen back to Tokyo and call it quits. Or I guess I could fly to Okinawa and then fly to Tokyo from there. Fuck you, Okinawa!

Either way, I have our hotels for the first 2 days reserved and train plans for the first 3 days, but the 4th day gets hairy because I want to visit a station in the middle of nowhere that only gets like 10 trains per day. So timing that is hard. But we can figure that out later.

As for the rest of today...

We met up with Konstantin in Shinjuku around noon. Got okonomiyaki (because it was a food I figured was interesting and yet easily vegetarian for Benoit). Tried to go up the Metropolitan Building Towers only to find out THEY WERE CLOSED FOR NEW YEAR'S OOPS. Guess I should have expected that out of a government building.

We went to Shibuya then so Kon could hit Book-Off and so Benoit could see yet another bizarre crazy neighborhood of Tokyo.

Then, Akihabara. I took them to the 7th floor Yellow Submarine shop and we hung out on the fire escape watching the sun set over Akihabara. Whee. We made our way to Yodobashi, and Konstantin parted ways with us there; then we went upstairs to get dinner on the 8th floor. Had indian food. It was tasty but the waitstaff were surprisingly rude. (I don't think Benoit noticed.)

Came home. Had train ticket mishap. Bleh. Been trying to plan the trip for the last few hours. I ought to sleep, I think.

The 7th floor Yellow Submarine balcony was awesome. Probably going to try climbing it on all my future trips to Japan that include Akiba (in other words, all my future trips to Japan).
