IT'S SHUNSUKE DAY, BABY (Japan Series 2010 version)

Went to Game 3 of the Japan Series tonight, with Steve and John and Lou and Katsu. Steve had won an auction for a picnic table, so I was kinda committed to cheer for Lotte with them, though I sang the Dragons songs too.

Lotte won and in a huge way, like 7-1. Shunsuke Watanabe pitched a complete game win, no walks, 5 strikeouts, 1 run. If Larry and Bobby were still here they would have made some reference to how my "boyfriend" obviously wanted to pitch well in front of me, since there was a running joke how I only came to Lotte to watch Shunsuke pitch, and he usually won in those cases, so even Bobby was like "Oh, yeah, Deanna, your boyfriend's starting today." Of course, I never actually SPOKE to Shunsuke... I was way too terrified then. Now I'd be fine, I think, but now the opportunity is no longer there.

I pointedly sang all of the OLD lyrics to the cheer songs, circa 2005. (They changed this past winter when the old ouendan quit as a measure of solidarity with Bobby.)

It was a generally good evening hanging out and eating food with friends. What's really funny is that Steve is to the Marines what I am to the Fighters -- seriously EVERYONE comes up to him like "hey you were in Nagoya weren't you?" or "hey Steve, where've you been? I saw you on TV..." and so on. It was a little weird to see it from the outside and not being the one that everyone was coming up to.

We did some shopping for various Japan Series crap afterwards and some Marines crap as well, so I came out of it with two more t-shirts and a pen and a keychain and a Series program book and all. Yay.

Bizarrely, Jason Coskrey of the Japan Times happened to be sitting across from us on the train. He was sick and sleepy so I didn't talk to him much on the train, but we chatted for a while in Tokyo station before changing trains... and even more bizarrely, while standing there, a friend I met two years ago at Lotte games, Yayoi, happened to come by. She's not really doing baseball stuff much at all so it was kinda weird but she said we should hang out sometime before I leave Japan. Pretty nuts, really.

I'm exhausted and it's 2am and I need to get up early for the big 6 championship game. Argh!

Outside the stadium.

Inside the stadium.

Fireworks in the 5th inning.

Our group, minus John, who ran out as soon as the game ended.

And uh, for Jeff and Anthony.

Doala, after missing the backflip and landing on his ass. THAT is why the Dragons lost, of course.
