Friday

Went downtown today; got a ride with Mike to Microsoft, and then took the 545 bus in.

First thing I did was a stop at the post office to mail a keychain.

Then I went to Uwajimaya. It was depressing. Everything grocerywise is expensive and Kinokuniya has nothing that is useful to me. I think they've basically gone whole-hog on catering to the anime crowd. What's scarier is that they used to have actual Japanese movie DVDs and now they have the "Viz production" Englishified version of them. I guess that's great for some people, but a little depressing to me, especially because they have nothing BUT these English releases of them. And I hate anime.

Also, most of the people working in the grocery aisles speaking an Asian language were speaking Korean or something else I couldn't recognize.

I went uptown and stopped at Daiso in Westlake to see if I could get a shoehorn (they make nice long ones that would be useful here). Firstly, the word for shoehorn is "kutsubera". Secondly, they apparently were out of them and expected them in next month. Doh.

After that I took the trolley -- or is that rode the SLUT? up towards South Lake Union where the new Amazon buildings are, or more importantly, where Carl is. We got lunch at Soup Daddy for old times' sake. It is in a very odd space that apparently used to be a company's cafeteria, and thus the flow of actually acquiring your lunch is kinda odd, but once you get it, it's still tasty. I had beef stew and a caesar salad. Yum! Carl had a sandwich that fell apart.

After lunch, I went back downtown with the idea that I'd waste the next 2-3 hours and then go east for my PH meeting. So, first I went to Barnes&Noble and read through some children's books with the idea of bringing them back to Japan for my JHS kids, but only found 2 more that were really all that good IMO, a Wall-E book and a Hannah Montana book. I also got some Englishy stickers.

And then I don't really remember. I ended up in Westlake Center's food court on the 3rd floor, drinking a smoothie and trying to do my Japanese homework, but fell asleep instead. Whoops. I do remember getting a smoothie because I couldn't figure out the menu and was like "Dude, I just want something with strawberries", so they made me something with strawberries. It was pretty good. I did some PH scribbling instead.

Stopped in the Made In Washington store on the way out to get some omiyage, a big thing of Seattle Chocolates that I can pass out. Funny thing is that the attendants were both ranting at each other in Japanese, which triggered my brain, so when I came to the counter I said in Japanese, "excuse me, I'd like to buy this" and they both stopped like "Whoa, you speak Japanese really well" and I'm like "...well, I live in Tokyo. This is omiyage." So I chatted with them for a bit. Turns out the older one is from Iwate and the younger is from Yokohama, and they've both been here for several years. Enough so that they were like "Oh yeah! This is Golden Week! I totally forgot!"

Then I took a bus to Redmond, Mike picked me up, and we had PH meeting, which I can't really talk about.

Afterwards Mike and I went to Ooba's with Ryan and Michelle and got dinner. It was really good.

Now we are home and I am tired. Tomorrow we will watch Mariners. Oh boy.

Heh, that reminds me of when we went to NYC for the JLPT and I accidentally asked for the bathroom in Japanese.

It's a little strange, but sometimes I feel genuinely sorry that you were born white, Deanna. :-/
