The Project To Divide One Room Into Two
I said I'd post pictures sometime, so here you are.
First, here's what the room looked like when it was all one room together -- I'd been using it this way for a year and a half, essentially as a big living room upstairs, since I don't really have a living room downstairs per se...

Facing the front of the house. This is the part that'll be Jenny's room.

Facing the back of the house. You can see my bedroom through the doorway.
I took those pictures a year ago, but aside from more clutter, that's about what the place looked like when I started the project. Kotatsu was in the dead center of the room, TV in the far area, extra TV stand being used as computer supplies table in the far area, bookcases up against the near wall, etc.
The first thing I did was to dig a sliding door segment out of the hallway and put it into the grooves in the middle of the room. For whatever reason, we no longer have the actual wall segments that used to make a wall, and we only have the ONE sliding door segment, but hey, I'll take it:

Next, I moved the TV and the extra stand into the near area, and then moved the bookcases from the wall by my bedroom to be up against the middle of the room, facing into the "near" area that will be the small living room:

Then the goal was to fill in and make a "wall" over the bookcases. I still had a bunch of cardboard downstairs from when I bought the bookcases, so I dragged some of that up here, and attached it to the wall and to the bookcases using heavy tape...

Here's what it looks like from the other side, from "Jenny's room":

And here's just what the little living area looks like with the TV in the near corner...

Anyway, I know it's hopeless to make anything soundproof in here -- even with real Japanese walls it wouldn't really be soundproof -- BUT I knew I should at least make it such that light could be on in the living room without shining through to the other half, so I taped some paper over the area between cardboard where it was leaking before:

And then today I covered the cardboard with posters to make it look like a real wall. What do you think?

Does it mostly look like there's a real wall there?
I still need to fill in like 45 centimeters worth with more cardboard on that left part -- sadly I can't use the sliding segment because there's an outlet in the way and it can't go all the way to the wall. But so far, so good, I think...

How do I get into the room? Through the door thing? Or is that a closet?
I could go buy random posters to put up on my side too, and that will make it even more lightproof. I have no idea how much random posters in Japan are. =)

Do you want the kotatsu table on your side or not? I was thinking it's too big to have in the living room -- I'd take out the blankets and all so it'd just be a low table rather than being a big monster of a space hogger. I have a small folding table that can be used in the living room if needed.

I'm probably also going to buy a cheap lamp, since I'm picky about wanting lots of extra light, partially I think because my eyes are so wretched.
I'll figure out the poster-thing when I get there. =)

I still have some of my stuff in one of the closets though I'm hoping to get it out soon enough.
