ts4z... wow! Of course, I've probably played in my last ever Kiltie concert so I won't talk about it much anymore, but it's cool to realize how many band geeks I've befriended at CMU :)
Ok, today. Wow, today was a big exciting day for me. It started out with coming to campus and hanging out in the CS lounge (funny that). I played bridge with Nick and with Chris Allwein and rjmccall/Emilie as fourths. It was odd, I mean, Allwein and I didn't exactly part on good terms, but strangely enough when talking to him it was almost like those bad two years never happened or something. It's sort of strange when that happens, but I think my attitude of "when talking to someone you used to have a mutual dislike with, that you haven't seen in a while, don't be the first one to open old wounds" works pretty well... so I dunno, we played bridge for like three hours and chatted and it was good I guess.
I also brought Set to the lounge and played a bit with some people. Christina Dinwoodie and I had two Set deathmatches. She won one, I won one. We're both sort of scary-good at it, which is good because I don't know enough scary-good Set players :) (ooooooold friends of mine like
fraterrisus might remember how much I used to like playing it freshman year, especially in situations like "waiting for the 15-127 mastery exam")
Around 5ish I went to ToI in Highlander with Charlie and Carl (and Drew joined us there but didn't actually eat Indian food). Coming back to Wean I got called onto the volleyball court by Mark Stehlik. So I played volleyball for like 2 hours. Now my arms and back are killing me. It was a lot of fun though. I played on the "non-serious" net on the same team as Nick and Allwein and other people I don't really know, against Mark and his daughter and Justin and Ed Latimer and such. I really need to play volleyball more. I've sort of lost my ability to spike, which bugs me. Although maybe I just need to play in a game where I get set more than twice daily :) I'm just a little out of practice, I guess... the arm muscles aren't what they used to be.
After volleyball I went to the Adamson awards with Nick, Drew, Nate, Clinton, and... well, many people. It was crowded as heck as usual. They had this guy James Crumley read, and he was somewhat entertaining. Then they announced awards. Nate won second prize for poetry, and Erin Snyder, one of my students from PGSS 98, won second prize for nonfiction in popular journals. Other than that, I didn't really know anyone who won. Kevin Gonzalez, a random junior English major, TOTALLY cleaned up, winning a prize in literally every category you possibly can at the Adamsons, even if some were just honorable mentions. It was really impressive. Reminded me of back when Dan Arp, Greg Marcks, and Alex Lewin would totally domincate the Adamsons. Afterwards I went around the reception a little bit, but not much. I ran into Elizabeth Paddock, who I had several workshops with and who graduated around the same time as me - she has a year-old son now, and she at least recognized me, which is more than I can say for most of the English professors - I tried to say hi to Jim Daniels and to Sharon Dilworth but both of them looked at me kind of funny. Depressing that. I guess it's what I get for not going to any englishy things for several years.
After the Adamsons and Drew had gotten his fill of more free food, we went to the UC to see Amelie. This guy who I think is named David Kaplan but I am not sure (who I see at KGB sometimes) saved us all a place at the front of the line, which was sort of cool. Nick and Drew and Nick's friend Kyle (really Jessica, but who am I to talk about Jessicas who go by male names) and one of her friends and I sat together for the movie - we tried to save a seat for Carl but he literally showed up one minute after they announced "this showing is sold out, please scoot to the middle and stop saving empty seats". Drew and I gossipped about D&D and Seattle and stuff. Jen Lin also showed up but disappeared. I saw Dave M in line but not during the movie, oh, and I saw
damion looking for a seat and I waved to him but I don't think he saw me. Oh, so anyway, this is all irrelevant. Amelie was a REALLY REALLY GOOD MOVIE. I can understand why people might not want to see it a second time but really, I liked it a whole lot, it was very well done and very funny and very weird and very cool and very French. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
Damn, I have babbled a lot. Carl walked me home and we chatted and now I am here writing a lot of stuff and Rebecca's supposed to pick me up to go play DDR in like 9 hours and I should sleep and all. Whee.
Happy birthday

Amelie rocked!
I'm so sad it didn't win any oscars, especially considering it was up for so many.
