slumdog millionaire and other fun

Today in the late afternoon I went to the Ritz East theater and saw a matinee showing of the movie Slumdog Millionaire, which I basically saw because 1) Stewart Clamen recommended it and it had good reviews and 2) it's literally the only thing in the theater that I really felt drawn to see. I feel like all the movies out right now, or coming out soon, are all either depressing or violent or stupid of various levels which turn me off. I realize that's odd for me to say given that I went to about 30 movies in Japan last year, but the difference there is that no matter what, I am *always* getting 2 hours of listening practice if nothing else.

Slumdog Millionnaire is basically about an 18-year-old orphan in Mumbai who happens to be one question away from winning the entire pot on the India version of Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire, and naturally, the show's producers are positive he must be cheating -- after all, how the heck does a kid from the slums know all of this stuff? It turns out that through a bizarre set of coincidences, all of the questions they ask happen to be things that he knows the answer to through events of his life, and so most of the story is told through flashbacks in that manner, question to question.

Anyway, the movie does infact live up to its reviews. It is innovative, interesting, well-done, compelling, and even has a happy ending. My only complaint was that it did have a few disturbing/violent scenes, and that I actually completely predicted the ending (even what the final question was going to be on the quiz show, what would happen and how he'd solve it) by about 2/3 of the way through. But I don't think that's a problem. Pretty much everything about the movie is really well done. Go see it. You won't be disappointed.

Whew.

So as for the rest of today, not much to say. On the way back from the movie, I stopped by Burger King to get bacon double cheeseburgers for dinner for me and my Dad. I realize that eating them is not such a great idea for me, but Dad needs to gain weight, and I can just go to the gym later in the evening and walk/jog off a few hundred calories. Plus, I haven't had a bacon double cheeseburger from Burger King in so long I can't remember what the last time was.

Naturally after seeing a movie about a quiz show contestant, I just had to watch Jeopardy and Wheel, of course. I still hate TV but I still like quiz shows, I suppose.

I don't know where the rest of the evening went. I had a bunch of things I wanted to do and I kind of started to make a little progress on each, but didn't really get anywhere significant. I did go to the gym though, so at least I can always say that.

Oh, and I filmed my dad talking to his computer in what is the FUNNIEST HOME VIDEO EVER but he said if I put it on YouTube he'll kill me. Alas. I just watched it again, 5 hours later, and I'm still laughing my ass off. I think that I should film my dad more while I'm home, and should also take photos of Philadelphia more. Yeah.
