As if this week couldn't get any WORSE.
I fully expect to be hit by a car tomorrow at this rate.
So yesterday was a stressful day, no hot water at the house, came back to Saitama to shower/etc, went to GEOS to deal with more crap, went to the Fighters game, they lost. Grr.
This morning I dropped my cellphone in the toilet by accident. I was wearing the loose pants I sleep in and wear around the house, and the phone was in the pocket, and I turned, and the phone slipped out, and SPLASH.
Well, uh, incase you don't know, keitai phones are usually not meant to withstand being dropped in water. This one certainly isn't, and it died.
But... remember something... I was in my NEW place. With NO internet. And no other phone line. And nothing else. And no contact info for anyone because it was all in my phone. Which wasn't backed up.
FUUUUUCK
Also, the gas people were supposed to come by between 9am and 3pm to install a new gas heater.
It was a little after 10am at this point and I panicked and started rifling through boxes for the book I keep business cards from people in, looking for Sam's. I found it and then I ran down to Akabane Station, found a pay phone, called Sam, explained the situation, so if the gas people called him he'd at least be able to explain what the hell the idiot gaijin did.
Then I went to the cellphone shop I bought my phone at. I kind of started into a negotiation for a new phone, but I didn't LIKE the phones they had and the only acceptable one to me was not in stock at the store, so I was like "I'm gonna go ask at the AU shop and see if they have it in stock," and so I went across the street...
...and the AU lady was like "Oh, you're still under contract, so we can actually FIX this thing for you."
"Really?"
"Yeah, but it'll take a week or two."
"AIIIIIEEE WHAT?"
"Nono, we'll lend you a substitute phone while it's being fixed."
"Oh. Can you get my data off the old one?"
"Let me see..." She plugs the phone into a power thingy. It's got "Error: 01" on the front. She tries a few things, while I'm still in OMFGILOSTMYLIFE mode, and tells me "...no, we can't."
ARRRRGGGHHH. Well, it seems this is a better option than spending $500 on a new phone. As it turns out, fixing it will cost me about $70. Which isn't so bad. So I agree to that.
As it is, it turns out I DID back up my "sent mail" folder about 2 weeks ago so I have SOME of the email address in there, but what I lost was all of my RECEIVED email from the last, well, year. Including what are some very important conversations to me :(
And I lost a lot of addresses I got in the last two weeks, including Fighters fans, and worse, GEOS students :( The ENTIRE address book is gone and I never backed it up. I lost ALL phone numbers pretty much except for the ones I had on people's business cards, which is very few.
I also lost all the photos that were on the phone that weren't on the SD card, AND I lost all of my bookmarks. ALL. This includes like, links to get train information, sports information, weather information, etc.
The good part is, as with everything else that happens to me here in Japan... something bad happens and I learn an important lesson from it. So the lesson I learned today is that I will ALWAYS back up my cellphone as often as possible goddamnit.
I guess I should figure that anyone I haven't emailed in the last 6 months -- my backup of the sent folder was from April to October -- maybe I don't need to email them again -- but it does suck to lose the conversations. Argh. And I also have nobody's phone number, what am I supposed to say? "Hi, I was a retard and dropped my cellphone in the toilet, can you give me your phone number again?"
Anyway, after getting the substitute phone, the gas guys called, came over, and put in the new heater. That was good. I was sadly on the phone with KDDI then though about my internet being turned off at the new house, there was some confusion and they scheduled to have someone come here TOMORROW NIGHT which is when I will be at the Tokyo Dome. Which sucks. They wanted my landlady's contact info, which was, of course... IN MY CELLPHONE. Sheesh. I eventually found the little paper it was written on but that took a while later.
After the gas guys left, I took a shower, sitting down, in the bath room. It wasn't so bad except it turns out the door is warped a bit and doesn't close all the way. Oops. I'll get used to this sitting-down-bath thing, I'm sure.
Then I ended up going to Kojima Denki with Sam and his daughter. Sam helped me pick out a fridge and washing machine that I bought for the house, about 56000 yen total for the two of them, I guess that's not too bad. We also stopped at the hardware store again and I bought some bookshelves and a table to put my laptop on upstairs.
I feel kind of bad because me being at the house has suddenly brought up all of these problems with the house itself that maybe Sam would or wouldn't have to deal with eventually. Grar.
I went to the post office and filled out a form for mail forwarding so that should be good too. Yay.
But, OH MAN has this been a tough week when I think about it. Sunday was depressing for various reasons, Monday was moving, Tuesday was my difficult last day of work, Wednesday was the Fighters losing the playoffs, and today I dropped my fucking cellphone in the toilet and there went a year of my life. Argh.
Now I'm up in Saitama, with my remaining 5 hours of internet here, trying to get things done, I guess. Tomorrow I'll give the key to Ishii in theory and then no more Saitama apartment. Whee.
Anyway I haven't eaten anything except two sembei crackers in the last 24 hours so I am going to hunt down some dinner despite that it's pouring rain outside. Sigh.

And for close friends, "I dropped my cell phone in the toilet" can at least make a funny story in retrospect.

Regardless, please don't get hit by a car. I can only deal with one friend who teaches english who's recovering from getting hit by a car in a foreign country at a time, and
