Good things come to those...
...who flow with Entropy rather than fighting it. :)
If I had to guess what my LJ entry for the day would be when I woke up this morning, I would have said something to the effect of "Got up, caught the 61B, went to Edgewood K-Mart, shopped a little for necessities, went home, played at Kiltie rehearsal, and hung out on campus for the evening playing some random board games with Carl and people."
Ok. That is NOT what happened today. Well, not entirely.
I missed the 61B and took the 61A, which has a much weirder route. But I made it to Edgewood. I got lunch at Wendy's. It was happy. On the way to K-mart, I walked by Fashion Bug. I noticed a nice white shirt, button-down with lace sleeves, through the window. I thought "Hmm, that's nice, but I never shop at Fashion Bug." I went to K-mart. I bought the bras and other things I specifically wanted, although I did fail to find a good frame for my JLPT certificate. I bought some cute ponytail holders to use for my Oasis ponytails. I got a black outfit, which I thought I'd wear for the CS prospective grad student dinner on Saturday. But I'd been thinking about that white shirt all along.
They have self-checkout lanes at K-mart now. It is really fucking weird. You take all of your stuff, put the bar codes up to a scanner, rub them over a demagnet thingy, and bag stuff yourself, and pay by either using a card or inserting cash into a machine, and then it prints up a receipt for you. I have no idea how this helps. I'd bet anything tons of people just "accidentally" don't ring up their stuff properly.
Anyway, I got out of K-mart to find it SNOWING. Sigh. So on impulse, since I had time before the bus, I decided to duck into Fashion Bug and check out that white shirt. It was in a few random sizes, and I have no idea what size I wear in anything but t-shirts (XL) and men's pants (34x30. Maybe I should post my "statistics" sometime like blk did). So I grabbed two of them, and I also found another white shirt with cut sleeves that was sort of cute. I tried them on, cut sleeve shirt first. It looked crappy. Then I tried on the shirt I'd been thinking about for an hour, random smaller size first. Damn! It fit perfectly and looked GREAT! I was really surprised - that never happens to me. So I went and bought it, even though it was like $30. It looks really good with my shiny black pants. I think I blame Rebecca for preaching the virtues of Fashion Bug to me so often.
Then I had to stand in the snowstorm for 20 minutes waiting for the bus, and 10 minutes walking home in the snow, then another 10 minutes walking through the snow to campus. I stopped in the lounge for a few minutes and then walked with Brian R over to the Kiltie band room. We got our instruments and came to the UC. I agreed to take his back for him after rehearsal since he has a 6:30 class. However, since only like 25 people showed up for rehearsal, Mr. Gerlach decided to cancel it, and we all took instruments back, and Brian and I went back to the lounge, where I found a bunch of random people doing a bunch of random things.
Well, one of those random people was Charlie, who often suggests that we should play bridge together. This time he was suggesting we should go to duplicate bridge together. I was really like "you have to be kidding," and he was like "no, I was going to go with Jason, but hey, if you went I'd play with you, and then Drew here can also go and he'll play with Jason." (Jason F is a now-graduated CS PhD guy who I first met playing bridge like six years ago). So he talked me into saying "I'll go if Drew will go," and then convinced Drew to go.
So we went to Subway to grab a little food, and then went over to Rodef. We thought we were way early, but it turned out there were just very few pairs there, even though it was the club championship game. 6 pairs, to be exact, including us. So we played a round-robin game. It wasn't that bad actually. Charlie and I had discussed bidding for the entire time from the minute I agreed to go to the minute we started playing. (It was funny, sometimes I felt as if I was just being quizzed on the Root/Pavlicek book. "You bid 1NT, LHO calls 2H, I say 2NT. What is it?" "Errr, Lebensohl?" "Do you want it to be?" "No, because I can never remember which is signing off and which is inviting." "Ok then. Wow, you know Lebensohl, that's cool.")
Ok, after I relaxed, it was pretty fun. And we even won. Well, we didn't. Well, we did. Well, we didn't. See, with 6 pairs, it's kind of silly - and the scores were REALLY close. So at first, she thought Charlie and I placed second, and gave us two bucks. Then she printed out our scores for us... and we went "wait, we're pair 1, and these are our scores, but this has the wrong names on it," and she said "Oh, wait, you won!" 'cause it turned out she had all the names to pairs corresponding wrong. So we thought we won and Drew and Jason placed second, and she gave us the appropriate money for that. Then we went through our scores to make sure they were all right. Drew was like "Err, our score on board 2 is incorrect..." and then it turned out that someone had marked the score sheet incorrectly, and so the scores we thought we'd gotten on it were wrong. Well, it turns out that the one board made enough of a difference that Charlie and I placed third, and Drew and Jason placed fourth. Damn. So that's the way it was.
Still, we did a lot better than I thought we would. I only really fucked up one hand and Charlie only really fucked up one hand. So in the end it was all good. Yay...
(Those who were there in the lounge beforehand (ie, jcreed, Carl, maybe Martin, and who knows who else who was there reads my journal...) will recall how totally nervous I was, like "I suck. I suck I suck I suck, you don't want to play duplicate bridge with me, I suck I suck, do you swear you won't hurt me if I do stupid things? I suck I suck..." Heh.)
Then I walked home along Morewood with Charlie for a bit. He was riding his unicycle. IN THE SNOW. There was a girl across the street riding her bike and she was like "wow!" and I was like "Hey, she's cheating, isn't she?" Whee.
So that is my day. Yay!
Oh yeah, and I got my capture the b34r shirt today! So I can wear it tomorrow for Capture the Stuff with Flags! Yaaaay!
