Monday - rainy day, shopping, etc
I'm going to write my Sunday entry second because it's a photo post.
Today I couldn't manage to put together plans to hang out with anyone, so it was my... second? third? day since coming to Japan that I didn't actually get on a train at all.
To sum up: I got baseball tickets for games that might not happen, watched a baseball game over the internet, met my downstairs neighbor, went to a new mall, bought clothes, bought a DVD player, did laundry, watched DVDs.
First thing I did in the morning at 10am was go to Lawson for playoff tickets, having learned my lesson last time. (If I had done so last time, I would have been in Chiba today.) These were for the Giants-Whoever series in two weekends, the CL Playoff Stage 2. As it works right now, PL playoffs are Chiba right now and Sapporo next weekend; CL playoffs are Nagoya next weekend and Tokyo Dome the weekend after that. I got one ticket to Sunday the 21st -- that game sold out REALLY quickly -- and two tickets to Monday the 22nd. Only one major issue: the series is Best of 5... and the tickets I got are to the FOURTH AND FIFTH games :( So I have to hope that nobody sweeps the CL playoffs, because I won't get to go to a game otherwise.
Anyway, having done that, I watched the first game of the PL playoffs over the internet, chatting with Westbay over on japanesebaseball.com, eating noodles here, etc. It undoubtedly would have been more fun to be at the game in Chiba -- especially since it was two of my favorite pitchers in Japan, Kazumi Saitoh and Shunsuke Watanabe -- but, given how rainy and cold it was, and how I've had a vague cold lately, it's probably better that I stayed at home watching at my apartment. The Marines won the game 8-4 and Saitoh is still inexplicably plagued in the postseason.
Turns out Yokohama really did play their game today, but oddly I don't regret not trying to go down and take advantage of free outfield tickets. It's just a long trip.
After the game, I decided to go shopping at Diamond City, just so I could finally check it out.
On the way out the door, I noticed my downstairs neighbor had the porch door open, so I decided to go say hello to her... despite that I introduced myself like "hello, I am Deanna, I live on the second floor..." in Japanese, she actually answered in English. Turns out her mother is an English teacher. Her name is either Chiho or Shiho -- I have to admit I actually didn't quite catch it. Her English is pretty good (my thought was "Hmm, she sounds like a Sprint 7 or 8"), and she said "I'd like to talk to you sometime!" So, we'll see.
The mall was really cool except one thing: the food court doesn't exist yet. I was under the impression there were some fast food places there, but if there are, I certainly couldn't find them. But, so, besides having a gigantic Jusco department store, the mall also had fun things like a Gap and a Sports Authority... and a Laox combined with Asobit City. It was just a mall store, not crazy huge like Laox in Akihabara or anything, but... it DID save me a trip to Akihabara, because I had wanted a cheap DVD player so I could watch Japanese DVDs (I don't want to have to change back my laptop DVD region). I bought one there for 2980 yen, which is like $25. Dude.
The other thing I bought in the mall was clothes. I spent about an hour at Jusco trying things on in their "Big Size" section. I tried on a bunch of trendy style stuff, but it just makes me look too fat. I found two great shirts though, and even better they were 1000 yen and 1980 yen respectively. I had an adventure trying on jeans as well -- see, all of the sizes were in Waist Centimeters. I figured out that I can wear an 84 but it's a little tight; 88 is a little loose but not bad... the problem was that I also need "tall" jeans, ie, an inseam of at least 76 centimeters, and I couldn't find a pair of 88x76 jeans that weren't ugly. The good part though is that I have an idea of what my size is now. The pants I brought with me from Seattle are all too big now, which is becoming a little bit of a problem.
So, since I couldn't find smaller pants that I liked, I decided to go off and stuff my face full of sushi instead. I rode my bike down to Kura kaitensushi, and had to wait about 20 minutes to get in... it's always crowded at 8ish on holidays. I registered with their machine, so it was a nice listening exercise to keep my ears open for "238, one person". I ate a LOT of sushi, too, like 9 plates. It's so easy to do that there. Only weird thing is, they had some stuff on the belt but didn't have it in the system as orderable. Like hamachi, and unagi. Very odd.
Stopped by Max Valu on the way home, bought a bunch of incidental stuff and a little bit of food. You know what's weird? Japan doesn't appear to have chocolate milk. There's a lot of coffee milk and strawberry milk and green tea milk, but... coffee? no.
I had to eat mango pudding when I got home because otherwise it's going to go bad.
I did a load of laundry here -- in my laundry machine -- then went over to the laundromat to dry it. I think that mostly worked okay.
I've been watching my Fighters DVD that I bought a week or two ago. IT'S SO GOOD. I just love watching the footage of the 1962/1981 Fighters... and now I'm just watching the highlights of the second half of the 2006 season. So good! Though I miss Shinjo. And Ogasawara.

I live upstairs from you
Guess you've never seen me before
And if you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of a
oh wait.
