hula hula
Wednesday there was volleyball. And laundry.
Today was Carl's birthday and he's a lazyass and didn't plan anything, so I took him to see the movie "Hula Girls" at the international film festival, with a stop off at Fuji first for dinner.
Really, it was a fantastic movie, probably one of the better Japanese comedies I've ever seen. It's even crazier that it's based on a real story. I think they did a pretty good job with everything in it (I mean, let's face it, I don't know what middle-of-nowhere-Fukushima-ken was like in 1965, but they had pretty crazy Tohoku-ben accents, and the teacher lady had a perfect 1960's hairstyle, and the scenery looked fairly accurate). I dunno, if you're curious what it would be like to go through the adventure of starting a Hawaiian Center (AN SENTA!) in Tohoku, go see the movie, I believe it's playing again in Bellevue on Saturday afternoon. It's pretty good. Hopefully they will have fixed the sound, too (there were several times during the movie where the sound went out, and we'd be reading the subtitles; at one point they stopped the film to try to fix the sound. Bleh).
I watched this week's episodes of Liar Game and Proposal Daisakusen when I got home. Liar Game was decent; outcome was NOT what I expected, and Matsuda Shota continues to actually make me think he might be able to act rather than just being a pretty boy. Proposal Daisakusen was less frustrating than the episode beforehand; I didn't throw anything at the screen this time, but... I think there's a problem with this show, namely that they HAVE to stretch out the plot all the way to the last episode, which makes for some very frustrating endings of EVERY timeshift. What was totally dumb was... well, without specific spoilers, Mikio basically says something that will completely break the time travel aspect in future episodes, assuming Ken goes back again, which he has to, since there are a few episodes left. Also, in all fairness, has Fujiki Naohito ever played ANYONE normal in a dorama? EVER?
