Cookies, Chihuahuas, and Flying Andrew

I guess I'm getting into the habit of updating in the morning rather than the evening. (For certain values of "morning").

I didn't do very much exciting yesterday, unless you consider baking cookies and going to Fuddruckers exciting.

Although, I suppose I never did mention the reason I was baking cookies. See, last June, right after I got back from my Japan vacation, I went to the wedding of my good friends [personal profile] ralphmelton and [profile] lorimelton. The "party favor" or whatever you call the table gifts at weddings was a little lace package with peanut M&Ms inside a heart-shaped cookie cutter, with a note saying "we hope you will use this to celebrate Valentine's Day, the anniversary of our first date" or something like that.

So, well, it was cold yesterday and I have time on my hands, so I decided to honor that note and bake tons of heart-shaped cookies using the cookie cutters. I decorated them in various ways, including making heart outlines on them in red, blue, green, orange, and yellow; putting white gel and lots of nonpareils on them; writing various kanji, most of which got melted into blobs in the oven anyway, although I did put 心 on a lot of them in red (that's the kanji for "heart"); some happy faces and some rainbows. I made like four dozen. I don't know how many I'll be foisting off and how many Eli and I will eat... we'll see.

Anyway... other than that, the only exciting thing I did yesterday was go to Fuddruckers with some friends, which I have been informed is pointless because the Steak'n'Shake at the Waterfront is opening. And I wanted Fudd's for a burger, shake, and pinball. Unfortunately, their Addams Family machine was quite fux0red. They've replaced Cirque Voltaire with a South Park machine. I suck at South Park, but I kinda do like it. I almost got a replay. Shafeeq got one. It was exciting. We called Corey during dinner because he requested being the dictator next week. He was sitting in his seat waiting for The Producers to start. Damn! It was good to see a lot of people though - half the group was not a normal Wednesday dinner group. I mean, there was me and Eli and Kevin and Shafeeq and Rochberg, but in addition, "Dr." John Langford (the friend I saw defend last week) went, and Benoit drove us there, and Norm Papernick was there, and Mike Donohue came along. Mike just got into the CMU CS PhD program, as did Shafeeq. I don't know if I've really talked to Mike much since maybe SCS SAC 4-5 years ago, but he worked at Cedilla before they vaporized, so it was good to be able to say "That building is cursed!" and have him know what I meant. Heh. (Cedilla Systems was also in 4616 Henry Street, which is where WhizBang is. Many startups have failed in that building... or been like Panasas and moved out and been more successful.)

After dinner I actually baked cookies, since all I did before dinner was make the dough and buy decoration stuff. That's pretty much all I did all evening - it took me like 2-3 hours total to bake and cool and wash stuff. Blah. Well, I also scanned in some pictures of Willie and Laura's stealth wedding, and of Ralph and Lori's kittens.

This morning I finished off formatting the pictures of the stealth wedding. they are here for now. Later I'll do the kittens, I guess.

But for now, I'm going to lunch in a little while with some friends. My ex Andrew (not aem2, but alford), who abandoned writing code after getting laid off a year ago and started getting his pilot's license, is flying from NYC to Pittsburgh as I type. (He needs a few long flights for his commercial pilot's license and figured he'd come visit friends.) So we're going to go pick him up from the little airport and go somewhere to eat and hang out. Yay!

Eli and I have moved Valentine's Day to Friday because that's when we have reservations for our super-cool Valentine's dinner. But Happy Valentine's Day anyway! If you have nothing else to be happy about today, at least rejoice in the fact that stores will be selling shitloads of chocolate dirt-cheap tomorrow. :)

that building

CGI, my first real employer, also started in that building. They didn't fail in that building but they did ultimately fail (15 years later or so), so I don't know if that counts. :-)

(I worked in that building for all of 2 months before we moved to Station Square. I wish they'd told me they were moving when they made me the offer, so I wouldn't have sought out an apartment that was crappy but within walking distance of Henry Street. Oops.)

If Steak'n'Shake is anything like the one I tried in the midwest there's definitely room for Fuddruckers. Mmm... Fuddruckers, next to the good bowling alley. I want to go bowling there again.

Thank you so much for taking pictures.

Because verizon's network is all fuxx0red (and the bastards are telling people that CMU is filtering them because they can't troubleshoot their own damned network), I've stolen copies of your pictures and mirrored them here (http://www.panix.com/~beegle/willieandlaura/).

At one point I quipped to [livejournal.com profile] ssaiscps that 4616 ought be called the "ghetto office" due to its adjacency to the ghetto palace.
