If I have all of the free time in the world, why am I still pressed for time?
Today I went to John's thesis defense. It was cool. I understood about 80% of it. What was neat is that all of the interns from Whizbang showed up at it (except jcreed), since they are in Avrim's machine learning class, and Avrim is John's advisor. So I sat with Drew and Jacob in the back of the room. Really, it was pretty neat stuff, it's just that I tend to zone out as soon as the big equations and stuff come up, because I can't usually figure them out quickly enough to understand what's going on, and if I dedicate braincycles to figuring them out, I'll end up missing what's said next.
One of John's committee was attending via teleconference, and so when the questioning started, they started with that guy, and it was hard to hear him. Danny Sleator got up and served sandwiches to everyone because there was this big tray of sandwiches on the table. That was pretty funny. I gave up on hearing the questions and just ducked out.
I ran to the post office and got there just in time to send off the package with wedding picture stuff for Laurel and Jason. Whew. So now that is off my hands. I wish I could remember what other photo projects I have promised people. I don't mind scanning and converting and framing and whatever, it's just that I need the time and to be in the right mood to sit down and do it all.
Tom Neuendorffer was in the CS undergrad lounge, I'm not sure why, but since his daughter was there, I guess that had something to do with it. Someone has a guitar in the lounge, so Tom was playing it. He is actually a REALLY good guitar player! He played all of these old Paul Simon songs; it was pretty cool to have "live" music while playing bridge with Noble and Nick and rjmccall. Oh yeah, Josh Decesare was there too. I think he might have been pissed that I didn't go to the Apple info session yesterday. Sigh.
Also, I have this great idea. I'm going to go talk to some profs at CMU and see how they'd feel about me sitting in on some classes while I'm unemployed. In particular I'd like to sit in on Operating Systems, since I never got to take it as an undergrad. I'm also thinking Avrim's machine learning course might be cool, and maybe I could even find out where 15-312 is and see if I'd understand any more of it if I listened in on it now. In theory, if I decided to really get into sitting in on classes, it would inspire me to get up in the morning and haul my butt to campus, which would give me a reason to get into a routine, at least.
Anyway, band was ok, but I'm getting sort of concerned that we keep starting later and ending earlier. I asked Mr. Gerlach if we could do any cool pieces this semester like Holst or whatever, and he said we simply don't have the instrumentation. That sucks. After band I had dinner in the O with Nick, Nate, Carl, and Clintron. I also played some Medieval Madness. My first game was insanely good, like 28 million, and I left the replay sitting there to go eat. My games after eating were pretty bad. Dinner was good though. I found out Nate has to stay an extra semester next year, and was like "Dude, just make sure you're not like, taking World History as a fifth year senior and sitting with a bunch of freako freshmen..." (because when I was a fifth year senior, I took World History for the third time and sat with Nick and Nate, who were then freshmen. wheehee. now they are seniors.)
Oh well. Came home. Saw that tomorrow night's movie in McConomy is Shallow Hal. Does anyone want to see it with me? I'm thinking I will try to make it to CS volleyball for once and then go to the movie at 10.
I'm going to go check on the meatloaf we're cooking (well... that I measured some stuff for and that Eli prepared, since I went blinded after the onions), and then play some DDR. I'm also thinking I should throw a Bemani party sometime. Some Friday or Saturday... I wonder whether I could somehow set up two TVs. The problem is only one living room, I think.

Thanks!
Thanks much, Dee. We appreciate the time you put into it.
